Johnny’s Selected Seeds Reviews
Johnny's Selected Seeds is rated 1.9 out of 5 by 20 shoppers, with the vast majority expressing serious dissatisfaction. Reviewers consistently report problems with shipping delays, seeds that fail to germinate or sprout poorly, unresponsive customer service, and refund disputes. Multiple customers mentioned switching to competitors like Burpee after experiencing long waits for orders and high shipping costs relative to the product quality.
The small number of positive reviews (15 percent five-star ratings) stand in stark contrast to the overwhelming majority of one-star complaints. Common issues include orders arriving late or not at all, customer service representatives being unhelpful or changing refund terms after initial promises, and website technical problems during checkout. Shoppers report that seeds from other suppliers germinated at similar or better rates, suggesting quality control may be a concern at this vendor.
Would give them negative stars if possible. I ordered seeds and bulbs in August but never got the bulbs. Since then I moved internationally and canceled my US credit card. I called to explain and they said they'd mail a check to my new address. Then I got an email saying management changed their minds and would only refund to my old canceled card. Total scam. Stay far away.
This season I wanted my typical $60 to $65 seed order for my garden, but the $23.50 shipping fee annoyed me. I switched to Burpee and got the same vegetables for way less, with shipping costs at less than half. The seeds sprouted just as well at both places. Bottom line: they're too pricey in every way. When I complained, customer service suggested a discount only if I spent over $200, which doesn't make sense for a home gardener like me.
Just one star for this place. They come across as unprofessional and dishonest. I'd steer clear if I were you.
They deserve zero stars honestly. This company is a complete disaster with terrible support. It's May 2nd and my seeds were supposed to arrive by March 31st but got lost in shipping. I called customer service multiple times but got nowhere. One rep gave me a tracking number, and after waiting two weeks, the postal service said the company didn't put enough postage on the package so it ended up in the dead letter office. I've sent multiple emails and left voicemails but nobody helps. At this point I'm filing a credit card dispute since nothing else worked. There's a reason they have such a low rating online.
Ordered 4 seed packets: 2 Big Beef F1 tomatoes and 2 Pantera F1 jalapenos. Used my reliable Burpee 72 cell starter kit that's always worked great. Mid-March I planted the seeds with my usual method of 2 to 3 per cell. We're almost to May and nothing happened except one cell with two tiny tomato sprouts. Called their support and got a bunch of excuses about needing special lights and warm soil. Skip these seeds.
This might be the worst seed company around. Orders take forever, shipping is outrageously expensive, the site has bugs that let you ship to the wrong place, the support team is useless, and the seeds barely sprout.
I've been ordering zinnias from them for a couple years now. My most recent purchase was for 2 thousand seeds in a 2 ounce envelope. The post office told me it would've cost under $5.35 to deliver, but they charged me $15.00 instead. That's the last time I'm ordering from them.
My credit card got charged within a week but nothing was shipped and I got no tracking info. They said they needed another payment method before they could process the order, even though they'd already collected the money and had stock available. When I checked my email, there was nothing about this requirement. When I asked to cancel the order, they refused four separate times and kept asking for a different payment method instead of just canceling it.
Would not recommend. They didn't mention that I needed certain tax paperwork first. I tried to cancel but they never explained how long the refund would take or said whether I'd get a confirmation email about it.
Absolutely terrible website. I just wanted to grab a few veggie seed packets for $23 but the checkout kept failing. The login kept saying the password is case sensitive, but nothing I tried worked whether I used all capitals, all lowercase, mixed case, added numbers or symbols. This company is a nightmare. I'll never shop there again. All I needed was 4 packs of seeds.
Never shopping with them again. I had a Columbine Pink Petticoat seed packet in my cart with $80 worth of other seeds, but when I tried to check out, the system said it was out of stock and wouldn't let me proceed without removing it. So I did and completed my order. Three days later that exact packet was back in stock. I tried to buy it separately and they wanted $6.50 just to ship one tiny seed packet. I asked customer service to waive the shipping since their system had forced me to remove it in the first place, but they refused. I'm done with them.
I'm sad to leave this review but people need the facts. Used to be a solid company with excellent seed quality, but the last several years have been rough. I've been getting way more germination failures on my bigger orders, losing hundreds in the process. When I called to ask about better quality stock, customer service promised to report the bad batches but then kept selling them anyway. This pattern repeated. Why would they sell seeds they know are bad? I don't have an answer. No matter what amazing varieties they advertise, poor quality kills the whole thing. They've lost my loyalty permanently.
I hate to write this review but people deserve to know what's going on. Years ago this company had excellent seed quality but lately it's dropped off significantly. My germination rates on bulk orders have been way below 75% way too often, costing me hundreds of dollars. I reached out about getting better batches, but even after telling customer service about the bad lots, they keep selling them. It's happened repeatedly. How do they knowingly push seeds that don't perform? I just don't get it. You can advertise the most amazing varieties, but if they don't sprout, it doesn't matter. They lost my confidence permanently.
Very disappointed with this order. The broccoli rabe and bok choy seeds wouldn't sprout, which meant I couldn't grow these vegetables that I love this season.
