Fast shipping

Fast shipping, secure packaging, and accurate order fulfillment. A great online purchasing experience. Highly recommend Downeast and will purchase from them again.

Sizing is way off

Sizing is way off. I ordered 4 large "layering essentials" tops. They were a bit snug so I returned for the next size up and had to pay $9.95 in shipping to return. Two of the 4 X-large replacement items were out of stock and no alternative was offered. The other 2 items that arrived were still too small. They fit the same as the large tops. Now I have to pay another $9.95 in shipping to return them. Also ... if anyone is short-waisted, these layering essentials will go to your low hips. Maybe flattering for a teen-ager, which I am not.

Poor customer service experience

Shopped here since I was a teenager, and it’s sad to see how downhill it’s gone. I recently ordered a skirt and it never arrived. There should be something in place to help customers when this happens, instead I’m out the $. Poor customer service all around. Never shopping with Downeast again, it’s easy to see why their St. George location closed.

Three Dresses, Same Defect: DownEast’s Viscose Problem and Customer Disregard

I’ve been a DownEast customer since 2008—clothing, furniture, you name it. While I’ve occasionally encountered sizing or quality inconsistencies, nothing ever compelled me to write a public review—until now. This latest experience, and even more so the dismissive response from customer service, truly takes the cake. After reading the many scathing reviews on TrustPilot and elsewhere, I now feel it would be irresponsible not to share my own experience and join the growing number of customers who’ve been similarly disregarded. So here we go.Last June, I purchased two dresses: the Jaida and the Athena. I washed Jaida months before Athena, but the results of washing both dresses were the same - considerable shrinkage despite following care instructions exactly. The Athena, especially, went from a perfect fit to being two sizes smaller – in a single wash! The puff sleeves collapsed, the dress shortened, and the silhouette was ruined. I have before and after photos and the difference is undeniable. When it clicked that there must be a common culprit, I did some digging and discovered that both dresses are made of viscose. Then I recalled a dress I bought in 2019 that also shrank considerably after the first wash, despite following the care instructions. I checked the tag; sure enough – also made of viscose. This is now the third viscose dress I’ve purchased from DownEast that shrank beyond wearability. Three different dresses, bought years apart, with the same disastrous result. To make matters worse, all three had conflicting care labels. One said “dry clean only,” another said “do not dry clean.” I mean, which is it? Or are we not supposed to wash our clothes at all? Viscose is far too finicky, delicate, and irreversibly unpredictable to be used in clothing. It should be on the blacklist of any ethical and reputable clothing brand. Yet DownEast continues to use it, label it vaguely, and shift the responsibility to customers when their products inevitably fail.I reached out to their customer service with detailed documentation. I included receipts, before and after photos, conflicting care instructions, and even fabric research. I made it clear this was not a simple return request but a report of defective material and misleading labeling. Their response was a generic message from “Sydney M.” that prioritized policy over accountability. Because I didn’t discover the flaw within 90 days, they refused to acknowledge it as a defect, even though the issue was inherent before these dresses even hit the sales floor! Whether it was revealed after 30, 90, or 300 days, the defect was always there, and I should never have been in a position to have to discover it in the first place! After some unproductive back-and-forth correspondence and my request to escalate the issue, Sydney offered me a $25 gift card as a “gesture of goodwill.” It wasn’t part of her initial response. When I thanked her but explained that the gesture didn’t even begin to cover the nearly $200 I had lost, I received no reply. It’s now been nearly two weeks and DownEast has ghosted me.This isn’t just about three ruined dresses. It’s about a company that refuses to own up to clear and repeated failures. It’s about poor material choices, contradictory care labels, and a complete unwillingness to engage honestly with informed, loyal customers. When someone shops for clothing, they should not have to second-guess whether the care labels are accurate or the fabric choices are sound. Customers trust that brands have already done the legwork to ensure quality and durability. To dismiss a customer who has done that work for you, who has highlighted a problem you should have addressed long ago, is not just irresponsible, but unethical, greedy, and frankly, cruel. If DownEast had exercised better judgment in its fabric choices or vendor selection, this never would have happened. Yet I’m the one paying the price. If you’re considering buying from DownEast, know this: they do not care about you. And if you see viscose on any tag in their store, walk away.

Fraudulent company

I bought a king size duvet (final sale). I washed on delicate and hung to dry. Found out it was a queen size with a hole in the middle of it. I took it in and talked to the Manager. She said that since I washed it there was nothing she could do. No exchange for the size I paid for, no difference of price refund from the king to the queen. I paid $200 for this stupid, damaged, mis-labeled duvet. Garbage company with garbage good and garbage customer service.

Wanted to love Downeast

Wanted to love Downeast, but feel really let down. We loved the employees who helped us with the purchase, which was two couches and two accent chairs. We spent about $5,000-$6,000 there. But about 90 days later, one of the couches burst a hole out of the bottom and all the stuffing is shooting out. We don't have pets, and our kids aren't allowed to play on these couches. They've seen nothing but normal use. The fabric just failed and unfortunately Downeast was not willing to help after only having them for about 3 months. I didn't even request a refund or return. I just asked that they assist in getting it professionally repaired. They were very nice in how they communicated, but made it clear they would not offer anything to help.I wouldn't recommend anyone purchase furniture from here. The styles are great, and the employees are nice, but I don't feel you can trust the quality or the company to stand behind their products.

Terrible online order and return experience

I ordered some clothes online and what I had sent to me was disgusting. They didn’t include one of the items I had ordered and instead I found a nasty plaid shirt, not even from the same company, that was covered in dirt and oil and smelled bad. The residue from the shirt got on the other two items I ordered. When I asked for a return, they said they would take back the order but only gave me a partial return. The entire order was about $55 and they said they could give me $26 back on my card or $43 in-store credit. I took the in-store credit only because it gave me most of my money back. I just used my credit and was only able to purchase 1 shirt and had to pay for shipping. I am very dissatisfied and will no longer be ordering from them again.

Poor customer service

I have been shopping at Downeast clothing for the last few months at the location in Mesa Arizona at the Dana point location. The manager has always been friendly and helpful. I bought two T-shirts recently that were fairly expensive and thought they were good quality. I only wore them two times and washed them and took good care of them. They had little holes all over. I tried to return them today and she was defensive and rude. She tried to tell me that the quality was good and when I disagreed with her, she did not like that, she was very unprofessional. She did exchange one of the shirts, but was not happy about it. I will not be shopping there anymore and will make sure to tell other people not to shop there either.

Best clothing store to come across in a long while...

I came upon Downeast during a casual scroll and bought some clothes. Read some of the negative reviews after the purchase was complete. To my pleasant surprise, my order arrived within 5 days and I couldn't be more happy about the purchase. They offer unique styles, quality materials, and unbeatable prices. Will definitely purchase from this store again.
