Stopandshop Reviews
Stop and Shop receives predominantly negative feedback, with shoppers expressing frustration across multiple areas of operation. The most common complaints involve high grocery prices (particularly for produce and bread), inadequate staffing leading to long checkout lines and slow service, and problems with delivery orders including wrong addresses, incomplete orders, and billing issues. Shoppers also report concerns about customer service interactions, with some describing staff as unhelpful or rude.
While a small portion of reviewers acknowledge positive experiences (such as good service through third-party delivery partners like Instacart), these positive notes are far outweighed by recurring complaints about pricing, operational efficiency, and order fulfillment. The combination of high prices and service inconsistencies appears to be driving shoppers away from the chain.
You promote chicken price cuts with all that clucking, but plum tomatoes are $2.49 per pound, a head of iceberg lettuce runs $2.49, and a loaf of raisin bread costs $7.49. I could keep listing items, but you get what I'm saying.
Just left Stop and Shop in Berlin and one cashier was working with eight people in line. They finally opened two more, and I got stuck behind Deborah, whose name tag said Deb. She moved like she was in slow motion. Took forever to ring up the customer in front of me and put their groceries in bags. Someone should seriously watch her. So irritating.
I shop at the North Andover Stop and Shop all the time, and twice in three months I've been accused of walking out without paying. The first time I had my receipt in my bag but forgot to grab it. The second time the bagger called me in the parking lot to tell me. The manager, Rolando Mendez, was incredibly rude, arrogant, and condescending both times. He took my camera and refused to give it back. I was so humiliated. This feels like racial profiling. How is it okay for the checkout person to accuse someone of stealing without being 100 percent sure? What legal options do I have to make sure this doesn't happen again?
I ordered groceries through their app for delivery and it showed up at the wrong location. Then I had to argue with two staff members, including the manager, about whether they even offer delivery through their app. Eventually the manager said it was my job to contact their delivery partner. After I pushed back, he made some calls but I still ended up dealing with the whole thing myself. Stop and Shop corporate confirmed the mistake was on their end. A week goes by and I'm still waiting for my money back. This company has terrible customer service and won't actually solve problems they create.
The store on Atlantic Avenue in Ozone Park usually gives me great service through Instacart, but today was different. The order got rescheduled because they don't have enough people working. When I finally picked it up the next day, the person only handed me 5 bags out of 11. Seems like nobody's keeping an eye on these young workers and they're not paying attention to what they're doing. You've got to do better with hiring and training. Going back a second time when I'm feeling sick is really discouraging.
I placed an order for over $400 of groceries with clear instructions to deliver to me personally only, and it went to the wrong address. I got no groceries and they still charged my bank account the full amount. They told me to wait 7 to 10 business days for a refund, which makes no sense. I switched to Instacart after that and won't be using Stop and Shop delivery again.
Bought an Italian sandwich for $7.99 and the bread was rock hard, lettuce was totally wilted, and the meat looked like it had been sitting out for two weeks. The whole thing tasted like it was trying to give me food poisoning instead of a decent lunch.
Shopping at the actual store is great, but their delivery service is basically a scam. They wait until 2 or 3 hours after you can't cancel to tell you what they're actually bringing and what's magically out of stock. Yet they still charge you the full delivery and tip based on what you ordered, not what shows up. I ordered $150 worth of groceries and paid $30 in fees plus a tip. Three hours after my order was locked in, they said they'd only deliver $17 worth of items. But I still got charged the full $30 in fees. Last week I ordered sale chicken legs and some soda. After the cutoff time, they emailed that the chicken was unavailable. They brought the soda but still charged the complete delivery fees and driver tip like nothing was wrong. That's it for me with them. The prices are decent when you actually get your stuff, better than the warehouse clubs for some things, but that doesn't matter if you never receive what you ordered. Their policies are straight up false advertising.
Went to Stop and Shop in Winchester around 6pm to order from the cold cuts counter. There was a kid ahead of me asking about some ham. The worker yelled at him that he could just grab it from the pre-cut section and was really rude about it. Then the kid ordered a quarter pound of cheap cheese and the worker cut nearly half a pound. He barked is this okay and the kid just said yes out of embarrassment. Then he told me there was another customer before me all the way at the seafood counter. He treated that elderly man terribly too, just trying to get a simple order. I couldn't take it and left without ordering. Tried to complain at customer service but nobody was there. I remember when shopping here used to actually be nice. Not anymore. I'm going to try going somewhere else unless things improve.
Had the worst experience trying to return an order. Nobody responds to complaints and your customer service contact information doesn't even work.
Stop and Shop is okay since it's my closest option, but there are some things that need fixing. I stopped buying their whole cooked chickens because they're too small and overpriced. Also, those plastic containers for the olives and cheese are flimsy and won't even seal right, so I don't buy those anymore either. I hope the higher ups read these reviews and pass along the feedback. If you bring back the bigger chickens and get better containers that actually work, I'll buy from you again. Thanks.
Stop and Shop basically stole from me with no explanation. I tried to buy ice cream and they said it wasn't covered by insurance. But they scanned it and took all my money anyway on a Sunday last month for $27.86. This is awful customer treatment and I'm not going back.
Skip this store if you can. Only one person at the registers, which is typical, and you're waiting 20 minutes while one customer takes forever with 12 other people lined up behind them. The problem is the cashier moves at a snail's pace with every single customer. Fruits and vegetables are often bruised, not fresh, or moldy, hiding under the bottom of sealed packages. When you ask an employee for help finding something, they say it's not their section. By the time a manager shows up after waiting, it's clear they don't really care about you.
Bad attitude after closing time. I went to the store at 8:30 to grab some lobster, but apparently the seafood department closes early while the deli and rest of the store are still open. Not sure what the logic is there. The staff seemed unhappy and just wanted to shut down before the official closing time.
I went to the Lincoln Street location in Holyoke and spoke with the manager about an issue I was having. She really came through and helped me out. Veronica is her name and she's amazing. She went above and beyond. You're lucky to have someone on staff who actually cares about customers. So polite and willing to help. I've never experienced customer service like that at Stop and Shop before. Please keep her around because she's exactly what this company needs more of.
