Music Direct Reviews
Music Direct has sharply divided shoppers, with ratings split nearly evenly between one-star and five-star reviews. Those giving five stars praise the company's professional service, knowledgeable staff recommendations (particularly for used instruments), and careful delivery handling. Customers highlight positive experiences with personalized service, such as staff arranging instrument pickups and providing recordings to help inform purchases.
However, one-star reviewers report serious problems including unresponsive customer service, order processing failures with international customers, high restocking and shipping fees on exchanges, and inadequate compensation for defective or damaged items. Multiple complaints focus on poor communication, with customers unable to get updates on orders and feeling ignored when attempting to resolve issues. The gap between positive and negative experiences suggests inconsistent service quality or structural issues with how the company handles problem orders.
INTERNATIONAL SHOPPERS BEWARE. DO NOT ORDER FROM MUSIC DIRECT. My experience has been really frustrating and completely unacceptable. If Music Direct can't sell certain products to international customers because of distribution rules, their website shouldn't allow those orders to go through in the first place. Instead, they took my order, processed it, and charged my card, then canceled it later. That's a system failure on their part, not mine. The situation gets worse when you consider exchange rates. When they refund me, I'll actually lose money because of how currency values change. Taking payments from international customers and then canceling afterward isn't just annoying, it's unfair. If there are strict policies about where they can ship, those need to be clearly stated before checkout, and the website should automatically block international purchases at that point instead of letting people pay first. This practice is misleading and makes the company look bad.
Really terrible company. Don't spend your money here. I ordered a vinyl album in mid-September, they charged my card, and then completely ignored my emails asking for any kind of update. I ended up filing a chargeback through my bank and I'm telling everyone else to stay away from this place. I wish I could give them negative stars.
Recently dealt with this company and they arranged to pick up our keyboard. The two staff members who came were fantastic, super efficient, really careful with the instrument, thoughtful, and very professional. It was nice to see this kind of quality service. Much appreciated.
A friend recommended I check out Music Direct because I wanted to purchase a used quality classical organ. Peter Braid suggested one they had in stock, a Viscount 232, and he even had some recordings made for me to listen to first. Really solid service. I went ahead and ordered it, and it got delivered to my home last Wednesday in expert fashion. They're backing the organ with a six month warranty. The instrument itself is excellent and I'm very satisfied with it. Peter did answer a couple of technical questions that came up, though it took a little while. I do think they might be short staffed though because it's not always easy to get someone on the phone. I've also noticed the instrument is still listed for sale on their website even though I bought it, and my account shows no orders, which seems like they need better internal systems. That said, I'm really glad I made this purchase from Music Direct.
They sent me a defective network player and charged me $1049.10 just to exchange it. They took a massive restocking fee on the exchange and barely covered any of the return shipping. This company is not worth doing business with.
Over the years I've bought multiple things from Music Direct with no problems. This time I got an open box Clearaudio strobe. The disc was warped, nothing was included with it, and the jacket spine was badly damaged. I sent photos and they offered just $10 in compensation. The only other option was returning it at my expense of $30. A lot of retailers stand behind what they sell. Music Direct clearly doesn't.
I'm giving 1 star only because there's no zero option. I ordered a turntable for my son's Christmas and the glass table arrived completely shattered. I sent pictures right away and was promised a replacement. It took way too many follow-ups and 7 whole weeks before they sent something, but it was the wrong part. They offered either a refund taking 3-4 weeks or waiting 4-6 weeks for them to find the right replacement. To make matters worse, the manager was incredibly rude, talking over me loudly to blame me for the problem. This whole experience was terrible.
Bought a pair of JBL 4367 Tower Speakers back in September 2020 and everything went smoothly from start to finish. The sales team was really attentive about helping me with such a big purchase at that price point. Really happy with both the speakers and how Music Direct handled everything.
Got the Elac Debut 2 DB6.2 speakers in walnut for Christmas and found them $100 off with free shipping, couldn't beat that deal anywhere else. Since I'd seen some concerns in other reviews about Music Direct, I called to ask about shipping and got a person to pick up in less than 30 seconds. She was really nice and answered all my questions. The FedEx delivery was quick. I have to say that in my case the product quality and service were both great. Definitely using them again.
The customer service here is really poor. One of their sales reps named Josh should not be dealing with customers at all. How is it acceptable for someone in sales to completely ignore what a customer needs and then hang up on them mid-conversation? The customer wanted to pick up his order, which the company supposedly allows, but the rep refused to finish processing it. If you work with the public, you need patience and a good attitude. This kind of behavior pushes both new and existing customers away and just adds fuel to negative reviews that end up hurting the company's reputation.
Their website advertised that you can trade in anything for products they have in stock, so I filled out the form and submitted photos of some speaker cable. They called me back and said the trade value wouldn't work out for them profit-wise, even though I was trading for some Cardas Clear 3 meter cables. I'm skeptical about their website claims now. I've had better luck with other retailers like Audioadvisor who have been straightforward with pricing and trade-in values.
I had to cancel my order from this retailer. After waiting 10 days with no shipment, I made 3 phone calls just to find out what was going on. They said it was because my billing address didn't match my shipping address. Nobody offered any kind of compensation for the delay or inconvenience on my $150 order. Very disappointed overall. I cannot recommend this company to anyone.
I spent a lot of time searching online for a reliable company to order some special vinyl from. This was a gift for someone really important to me, and everyone I worked with was super helpful, courteous, and clear about timelines for items that were on back order. So far the whole process has been excellent even though I haven't received it yet. If this is how their whole company operates, I'm confident everything will go smoothly. I'll let you know what I think once the package arrives.
After searching for days for a trustworthy place to order some vinyl, I finally found Music Direct. Everyone on their team was really helpful, respectful, and honest about what to expect with the back ordered items. Overall it's been a great experience so far, though the package hasn't arrived yet. Based on how well their customer service handled everything, I feel confident the shipment will be handled properly. Will update once it gets here.
I had the chance to work with Peter Braid when deciding to get a new home organ. Due to some health complications, I wasn't able to access my computer for a while, but I'm doing better now and want to share my experience. Peter went above and beyond to help me, explaining everything patiently and offering invaluable guidance. What really stood out was the way he handled delivering the large organ to my home. Managing such a sizable instrument on his own was truly impressive. After installation, he gave us a nice performance to showcase the organ's capabilities and his own musical skills. I would definitely recommend Music Direct to anyone. When the time comes for another upgrade, I'll go straight back to them. Peter, thank you for your excellent support.
