Build-A-Bear Workshop Reviews
Build-A-Bear Workshop receives highly polarized reviews, with shoppers either very satisfied or quite disappointed. Positive reviewers appreciate the experience of creating personalized stuffed animals, particularly themed collections like Harry Potter. However, recurring complaints center on aggressive upselling tactics at checkout (light-up hearts, scents, voice recordings, special packaging), pricing that many feel is excessive for the product quality, and inconsistent application of policies (such as strict birthday package timing restrictions). Several shoppers also report frustration with customer service responsiveness and shipping delays, with some noting long wait times when attempting to resolve billing errors.
Quality and value concerns appear frequently in negative reviews. Shoppers report that optional add-ons like scents are barely noticeable once sewn inside the toy, accessory sizing issues with certain character plushies, and checkout experiences where staff seem intent on maximizing transaction value rather than serving customer preferences. Loyalty appears conditional: long-time customers have indicated they would not return after service failures. The store's inflexible policies around promotional offers and the overall cost of customization options emerge as significant friction points, even when the core product itself meets expectations.
First visit with my young child was not a good experience. From the beginning, the staff kept trying to push optional add-ons on us. We're talking about a light-up heart, scent options, voice recordings. My daughter just wanted a simple stuffed animal. Then at checkout they started in with a backpack, a special box, and acted surprised we didn't want a bag. The kid just wanted to hold her new toy! And throughout all this upselling, they conveniently never mentioned the actual prices. I'm sure other parents getting pressured into buying stuff get some shocking surprises at the register. At the checkout, the cashier also tried really hard to get me to pay five dollars for a ten dollar discount on my next visit. I said no, but they kept asking like I didn't understand. And while I was paying, they asked for my email address saying it was for my receipt. Turns out they enrolled me in their marketing list without asking. Now I get multiple promotional emails from them every single day. That's not right, and I won't be spending my money there anymore based on principle.
The prices are way too high for what you get. If you're considering the scent add-on, skip it. It's basically undetectable once it's inside the toy, so your money just goes to waste. Similarly, before buying outfits, make absolutely sure they're actually sized for the character you pick. I got a hat for a capybara plushie and it won't stay on the head at all. That was another pointless purchase. When you're paying these kinds of prices, the quality should be better. I don't think I'll buy from them again.
I bought a Harry Potter Slytherin bear at the Oxford Street location as a gift for my niece. On the train ride home, I realized I'd been charged for two light-up wands at ten dollars each when I only purchased one. I called the shop using the receipt number and got transferred to their support team. After spending nearly an hour on the phone and sending them a photo of the receipt, I was assured I'd get a ten dollar refund. But then I got an email saying they didn't have enough proof to process it. This company seems to look for any reason not to give refunds. They come across as really greedy and unwilling to make things right. I'm quite upset about this experience.
Do yourself a favor and never buy expedited shipping from Build A Bear. They move at a snail's pace and their customer support team is absolutely terrible. I've been a loyal shopper for years, buying for kids and grandkids alike. But after what happened with my order this month, I'm done. Won't be going back.
We made the drive almost two hours to the location in Leicester with less than three weeks until our daughter's birthday. We weren't aware that the birthday package had to take place during the birthday month specifically. I told the staff person that we'd come all this way and asked if maybe we could still do it today anyway. She flatly declined.
My family drove close to two hours to visit the location in Leicester with about two and a half weeks left until our daughter's birthday. We didn't realize the birthday special had to happen during the actual birth month. I let the staff member know we'd driven so far and asked if there was any possibility they could do the celebration for us today. She simply refused.
This was terrible. I ordered online and picked outfits that were suggested for my gift recipient. Even though I requested the bear be dressed in them, they just threw the clothes loosely in the box and they're way too tiny to actually fit. The company gave me a really disappointing response and refused to take any accountability. I'm honestly too ashamed to give this to my grandson for Christmas considering what I paid for it. I really wish I could share a photo of what arrived.
Everyone there was genuinely lovely. Melanie at the Stratford branch really made my daughter's birthday special with her singing and kindness. She even came back during her break to help solve a problem we had. Fantastic staff member! Many thanks!
The team members were all incredibly warm and friendly. I have to give special recognition to Melanie working at the Stratford location! She really made my daughter's birthday feel special with her singing and generosity. She even took care of a problem for us on her own time during break. What an amazing employee. Thanks so much!
I have to praise the amazing team at this store. Hannah, Laura, and Evie completely went above and beyond for our little one. They turned the whole visit into such a special memory for our daughter. They're truly valuable members of this organization and we can't wait to come back. Thanks so much for making her first experience here absolutely perfect.
The staff at this location absolutely blew us away with their kindness and professionalism. Hannah, Laura, and Evie went above and beyond to make our daughter's experience unforgettable. They truly are superstars who make such a difference for this brand and we'll definitely return. Thank you so much for making our girl's first visit so wonderful.
I purchased the Cheshire Cat character from Alice in Wonderland as an online order and it was a limited edition release. I had to keep checking back on their site basically every week until I was able to grab one. When I finally got it, the cost felt reasonable since they usually charge a lot more for these items. Plus the customer service was wonderful throughout. Very pleased overall.
Got the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland online and it was a limited edition item. I had to check back on the website almost weekly before I was finally able to snag one. The price point is pretty fair since these normally run expensive, and I got great help from customer service. Really satisfied with the whole process.
I'm really surprised hearing about all the bad experiences some people have had with this brand. I ordered something online as a present for a coworker's kid and ran into a problem with it. When I contacted their support team, they got back to me super fast and were very professional about fixing things right away. Maybe I just got lucky, but I was genuinely impressed by how they handled it.
I grabbed the popular spring green frog back in late February. Delivery was fairly fast, but honestly when I opened the box I was pretty let down at first. One arm is stuffed way too full, the eyes look crooked, the mouth isn't symmetrical and the stitching in several spots is pretty sloppy. Under normal circumstances I might overlook this kind of thing. But paying almost twenty dollars for a poorly constructed toy just didn't feel right. Since that's quite a bit of cash to spend on a toy, I really expected better quality overall. I will say though, I don't regret the purchase when I think about it differently. Maybe the imperfections just make it one-of-a-kind, or that's how it's supposed to be. Either way I'm happy with it. I just wanted to give people a heads up that it won't be perfectly made. Bottom line, I think you should grab one. It's adorable, super soft, and totally iconic.
