Amtrak Savings Hacks

Book flexible dates for better savings

Travel outside peak seasons and weekends when available to pair with promotional codes for maximum discounts on fares.

Check roundtrip versus one-way pricing

Some Amtrak offers provide better value on roundtrip tickets, so compare pricing structures before selecting your ticket type.

Monitor RetailCoupons.com regularly

Amtrak frequently updates its promotional offers, so checking RetailCoupons.com regularly helps you catch time-sensitive discounts.

Combine codes with membership programs

If you have an Amtrak loyalty membership, verify that promotional codes can stack with member benefits for additional savings.

Amtrak Shipping Policy

Amtrak tickets are digital or printed at the station, so traditional shipping does not apply. Passengers should review ticket delivery methods on Amtrak.com to understand whether tickets arrive electronically, require pickup at the station, or are mailed in advance of travel.

Amtrak Returns & Refund Policy

Train ticket cancellation and refund policies vary based on ticket type and how far in advance changes are made. Shoppers should review Amtrak's specific refund terms for their ticket class before purchasing, as some tickets may be non-refundable or subject to change fees.

Amtrak receives sharply divided reviews, with shoppers either highly satisfied or deeply frustrated. The positive experiences center on the Acela service along the East Coast corridor, where travelers praise comfortable seating, smooth rides, on-time performance, pleasant waiting areas, and clear signage. These riders describe the Acela as an efficient and enjoyable way to travel between major cities like New York and Washington.

Negative reviews highlight two main pain points: operational issues on certain routes and staff conduct. Complainants report overcrowded trains with insufficient seating, rude or intimidating crew members, and significant frustration with the booking process, including website crashes, app errors, and confusing login requirements that force repeat entry of personal information. Some long-time riders indicate they have abandoned Amtrak due to these deteriorating experiences.

Monica J.Dec 24, 2025

I've been riding Amtrak for a long time but I'm officially done now. The bus operators I've dealt with have always been friendly and respectful. Today's Amtrak trip was totally disappointing. People were sitting on the floor because there weren't enough seats, and the train staff, especially some of the female employees, were incredibly rude. They had terrible attitudes and didn't help passengers at all. Really sad that they think it's okay to act that way without offering any assistance.

Jennifer M.Dec 22, 2025

Recently rode the Acela between New York and Washington and couldn't have been happier with the experience. The lounges and waiting rooms were pleasant, signage made it simple to navigate, and the actual train ride was fast and comfortable. For anyone looking to travel on the East Coast corridor, this is hands down your best choice.

Thomas R.Dec 22, 2025

Took the Acela from NYC down to the nation's capital and had a fantastic time doing it. The boarding areas were comfortable, directions were easy to follow, and the ride itself was really smooth and on schedule. This is definitely the way to travel if you want to get down the East Coast efficiently and comfortably.

Making my first ever train purchase through Amtrak and the process was a nightmare. Went through their website, clicked around, then got an error message saying to begin again. Switched to their app hoping it would go faster, but nope. Typed in all my information for a second time. Went to log in and had to choose between a passenger number or email. Used the passenger number and got told I needed to use email instead. Put that in along with my password and hit another system error. Now I'm supposed to start from scratch again. I'm completely done trying. Oh, and the system wouldn't let me even select which seat I wanted anyway. So why did I just burn three hours of my life doing this?

William J.Oct 7, 2025

Decided to book my very first train ticket in the US and went through the website. I kept clicking and got a message saying something went wrong and I'd need to start over. Thought the app might be quicker, but that wasn't the case. Went through entering all my details again. Tried to log in and got asked if I wanted to use a guest ID or my email address. Tried the guest number first and the system told me to use email instead. Fine, I entered my email and password. System crashed. Had to start completely over. Honestly, I was exhausted by the whole thing. And just to add to the frustration, the system wouldn't even let me pick my seat. So what was the point of spending three hours on this?

Stephanie K.Sep 21, 2025

Had the misfortune of dealing with a crew member on the Northeast line, and it was by far the worst experience I've had with any Amtrak staff. She was loud, intimidating, and treated everyone terribly.

Amanda V.Sep 21, 2025

A staff member working the Northeast corridor route was absolutely the worst Amtrak employee I've ever encountered. She was loud, aggressive, made threats, and treated passengers poorly.

Nicole R.Sep 21, 2025

Had an interaction with staff on a Northeast corridor train that was really negative. This particular employee was yelling, threatening passengers, and overall behaved in an unacceptable way.

Boarded in the early afternoon for the Auto Train heading south. Within 30 minutes of leaving the station, we ground to a halt. We remained trapped on the train for 10 long hours while staff gave us almost zero useful information about what was going on. Turns out a major derailment involving dozens of freight cars had shut down the entire route. The response was chaotic and inadequate. Throughout our wait, the crew handed out practically nothing to eat or drink except for a tiny water bottle and maybe one snack, and we got conflicting information repeatedly. It was clear nobody had an actual crisis plan in place. Getting everyone off the train when we finally did was disorganized and stressful. We learned there wouldn't be any southbound trains running the next day, and staying overnight in our parked car was the only thing they could offer us. That simply wasn't going to work for my son and me because we

Rachel H.Aug 21, 2025

We checked in for the Auto Train in mid afternoon, expecting to reach our destination by the following morning. Shortly after departure, the train stopped moving. For the next several hours, we had almost no idea what was happening or when we'd move again. It turned out that a significant freight train accident blocked the entire line. How they managed this emergency was really disappointing. Stuck on the train for nearly half a day, we were given basically one small water bottle and a snack item, plus we kept getting different stories about what would happen next. Nobody seemed to have a plan for emergencies, and when they finally got everyone off, it was a total mess with no organization or coordination. To make it worse, they said no service to Florida would happen the next day either, and they wanted my son and me to just sleep in our car at the station after they unloaded the vehicles. This wasn't a real option for us since we needed

Susan C.Aug 21, 2025

Boarded the Auto Train for what should have been an overnight trip departing in early afternoon and arriving by morning. The train pulled away around 3:30 PM but came to a halt after less than half an hour. We ended up sitting there for the next 10 hours with very little information. Eventually we learned that a freight line had a major derailment with over 40 cars blocking our route and we couldn't move forward. The way management handled this whole situation was completely disorganized and fell way short. During those 10 hours, each of us got basically nothing to consume except a small bottle of water and maybe a snack, while we got contradictory information about what would happen next. There was clearly no backup plan, and when they finally got us off the train, it was messy and chaotic, adding to everyone's frustration. We were told no trains would run to Florida the next day either, and the suggestion was that we stay overnight in our vehicles after they were unloaded. That wasn't workable since my son and I had

I was in a bind after arriving at a station in Colorado, needing to catch a train that departed the next morning from a different town. My bank account was nearly empty following my ticket purchase, so I'd called for a rideshare and made it to the station by evening. The town was completely unfamiliar to me, and I literally had almost no money left. All I wanted to do was stay inside somewhere warm and safe until morning when I could board. I understand the station has to manage loitering, but I was a ticket holder and didn't have much choice about arriving early. It was the night before my departure, and I didn't see the harm in just sitting there quietly overnight. They ended up kicking me out anyway and telling me to return the next day. My apologies for any writing errors.

David M.Aug 8, 2025

Found myself stranded outside a small town with a train to catch about an hour's drive away. I'd spent nearly all my remaining money on my ticket already, so getting an Uber was a stretch. The ride dropped me at the station in the evening, way before my morning departure. I don't know this place at all and had zero dollars to my name after paying for my fare. Honestly, I just wanted to find a quiet spot indoors and wait until it was time to board. I realize stations have rules about hanging around, but as a paying passenger I didn't really have another option showing up as early as I did. Since my train wasn't leaving until the next day, I couldn't imagine there'd be an issue with me simply waiting inside. Unfortunately, I got told to leave and come back tomorrow. Sorry if my grammar's a bit off.

Robert T.Aug 8, 2025

Got stuck near a small Colorado town and had to get to a train station about 60 miles away in another direction. After spending most of my cash on my ticket, I managed to catch an Uber ride, but it didn't get me there until evening, the night before my departure. Since I'm not from the area and had basically no money left, I figured the safest thing would be to just hang out inside the station and wait for my train in the morning. I get that they don't want people loitering around, but I'd already paid for my ticket and didn't have any other choice. There wasn't any reason I could see why sitting quietly inside overnight would be a problem. Instead, staff asked me to leave and come back the next day. Apologies for how I'm writing this.

Just read through other reviews and people are telling the truth. The Modesto to San Diego route costs $100 and takes over 12 hours, plus food and drinks are pricey. You can get a bus for $75 that gets you there in 10 hours with way more stops throughout the day. The seats are actually comfortable on the bus too and it moves way quicker. I'm finished with Amtrak after this.
