Family Dollar Reviews
Family Dollar receives a polarized set of reviews from RetailCoupons.com shoppers, rated 2.5 out of 5 by 17 reviewers. The dominant complaint centers on customer service quality, with shoppers reporting confrontational and unhelpful staff responses to returns, pricing disputes, and general transactions. Multiple reviewers describe unprofessional manager behavior, cashiers showing attitude about price adjustments, and supervisors who refuse reasonable requests like providing receipts. Additional concerns include perceived poor staffing levels, outdated inventory, and overall operational issues that leave shoppers questioning how locations remain open.
A smaller segment of reviewers express satisfaction with Family Dollar, suggesting some positive experiences exist. However, these favorable views are significantly outnumbered by negative feedback. The recurring issues relate directly to employee conduct rather than product selection or store cleanliness, indicating that customer service represents the primary area driving dissatisfaction at this retailer.
I had a really bad experience at the Family Dollar on East Pleasant Valley Boulevard in Altoona, PA when I tried to return a defective can opener that I had just bought with my receipt. The manager Kelly was confrontational right from the start and unprofessional the whole time. She wouldn't process my return and claimed the item was old and accused us of not purchasing it there, basically saying my dad was lying. Even with proof of purchase, she refused to help. Only when another family member stepped in and forced her to follow store policy did she finally complete the return, and she did it without saying a word. A store manager shouldn't turn a simple return into a personal attack. Family Dollar should really look into how this manager treats customers and work on her service skills.
At checkout, a candy bar scanned for $1.75 when the shelf label clearly said $1.25. I pointed this out to the cashier and she confirmed I was right, but she gave me attitude about it saying prices change constantly. When I mentioned they have to honor the posted price, she said she couldn't and maybe the manager could help. The manager came over and said she wasn't required to honor it, but she'd do it this time as a courtesy. I informed her that Virginia law actually requires businesses to honor displayed prices on items unless there's a posted quantity limit on any advertisement. She started yelling and cursing at me in Spanish, calling me inappropriate names. I responded back in Spanish since I speak it fluently, letting her know to watch her language. For a manager to act like this was completely unacceptable and unprofessional. I don't expect top-tier service here but this was over the line.
I don't understand how this place stays in business. They keep opening new locations but can't even staff the ones they've got. The whole operation seems pretty poorly run. The pay must be terrible if they're only getting the worst employees possible. Their inventory seems outdated and broken most of the time. At this point it's kind of ridiculous that shoppers waste their money at somewhere this overpriced and unreliable.
The younger cashier was actually nice, but the older supervisor was rude to me. She wouldn't give me back my original receipt even when I explained I needed it for a business purchase.
I went to the Family Dollar on Market Street in Pottsville, PA and saw someone walk out with a bunch of candy without paying. I told an employee what I witnessed, and he made an inappropriate comment about the person needing drugs. The next day that same person approached me saying the employee had told him I accused him of theft and drug use. I talked to the manager about how I was just trying to help, and she revealed she'd given him my name. The manager then told me that was the thanks I'd get, and when I said I wouldn't be coming back, she responded by saying good and accused me of yelling at her. Because she shared my information, I was put in an uncomfortable position. I actually loved shopping there until that Saturday happened, and now I'm looking into legal options with the company.
This location has really declined over the years. My last few visits have been pretty disappointing with the rudeness I encountered. Something seems off with how they're treating customers nowadays. It's unfortunate to see.
The manager at the Family Dollar in Durant, Oklahoma can be really rude. Sara is honestly the only friendly person working there.
This company's customer service is the worst. My card stopped working and I've been calling for two months. Nobody is doing anything to help fix the problem.
This store near the West Sugar Creek parking lot is disgusting. The dumpster area and parking lot in front and to the side are a complete mess with trash scattered everywhere. You'd think with how bad it looks out there, you'd probably find rodents hanging around.
I was shopping at the Family Dollar on French Road in Cheektowaga and the checkout person was incredibly rude. Some people just don't have the personality for working with customers and this lady is definitely one of them. She scanned a big item I was buying, so I placed it in my bag to give her more space on the tiny counter. She then yelled at me for doing it. When I asked why she was treating me so badly, she snapped back saying she has to be rude because I was messing up her process. I've never been spoken to like that before. I'm a 55-year-old woman who's always polite and respectful and did absolutely nothing to deserve that kind of treatment. I walked out and didn't finish my purchase because I won't shop anywhere with customer service that terrible. There are plenty of other places to go, and I won't be returning. She should understand that without customers, there's no paycheck.
I bought quite a few things and brought my own bags. When I handed them to the cashier, she told me I had to bag my own items. Not only is that her job, but I'm 78 years old and the shopping carts can't leave the store so I had to carry everything on my shoulders, arms and hands. I was hurt by this and told her she should be the one putting items in bags. She also didn't offer any assistance whatsoever.
My mom left her keys behind and Nathan along with his team went the extra mile to help search for them. It turned out they were in her car, but we were really grateful for how kind and helpful Nathan and the staff at the location on North Judge Ely in Abilene, Texas were to us.
The Family Dollar in Mason, Texas is absolutely fantastic! Crystal, Ellie, and the whole crew are wonderful to work with. Even the delivery drivers are great! I dropped my credit card in the parking lot once and the team jumped right in to help me find it. The truck driver actually ended up locating it. These are genuinely good people.
JoAnn is absolutely the BEST! She greeted me when I walked in, helped me grab a cart, and asked what I was looking for. She put the heavy items in the cart for me and pointed me toward everything else I needed. Over the last 15 years, no other cashier comes close to matching the PROFESSIONAL, HELPFUL, and fantastic service JoAnn gave me. Family Dollar needs way more employees like her who really understand what good CUSTOMER SERVICE means. I'm really thankful for how she made my shopping experience today special.
I grabbed a pair of leggings four years ago and they still look and feel brand new. I wear them constantly and after countless washes, there's no wear or damage anywhere on them. I own a lot of pricier leggings too, and I was totally surprised by how good these cheaper ones hold up. Really impressed with the quality.
