Eastern Leaf Reviews
Eastern Leaf is rated 1.5 out of 5 by 17 shoppers, with the vast majority reporting serious problems. Customers report receiving dead or dying plants, misleading product descriptions (particularly regarding plant sizes), unresponsive customer service that blames carriers rather than taking responsibility, and refusal to offer replacements or refunds despite poor product quality. One shopper also reported unauthorized recurring charges to their credit card using different company names. A small number of shoppers gave positive ratings, though no positive review excerpts were provided.
The recurring issues suggest systemic problems with plant viability upon arrival, inadequate shipping methods (particularly in winter weather), and customer service policies that deny accountability. Multiple customers offered solutions (such as paying for expedited shipping or accepting responsibility) that were rejected by the company. Shoppers consistently report that Eastern Leaf shifts blame to external factors or claims fine print disclaimers absolve them of quality guarantees, leaving customers out significant amounts of money with no recourse.
Really disappointing situation. My tree never showed up and when I reached out, the company blamed UPS instead of taking any responsibility. I'm out $70 with nothing to show for it.
Ordered a bonsai for a gift and something went wrong during delivery, but after that Eastern Leaf kept charging my credit card over several months using different company names. My credit card company helped reverse the charges though I'm not sure if they ever got paid back. Never do business with this company as they seem to have corrupt practices built into their operation.
Do not buy from this place. I got a bonsai that came completely brown and obviously dead. When I complained, Eastern Leaf basically said there's fine print on their site about no guarantees on certain curated plants. Translation: they wanted to dump a dead tree on me.
Ordered a bonsai as a Christmas gift from Eastern Leaf and it showed up completely dead because they shipped it for five days in winter weather. I even offered to pay an extra $100 for overnight delivery to guarantee it would arrive safely, but they turned that down for some reason. When I told them the tree was dead, they said the original one was no longer in stock. The replacement trees they offered were half the price of what I paid, smaller, and way lower quality. I asked for my money back since they failed to deliver a living product, but they refused and said they'd only give me a partial refund. Unbelievable. This company clearly doesn't care about shipping live plants properly, even when customers are willing to pay more for it. And they won't take responsibility when their service delivers a dead product. Stay away from ordering living plants here. I'm disputing the charge with my credit card company to get my full payment back.
Ordered a large Rock Juniper Bonsai from Eastern Leaf and it died within weeks of arriving. I sent them an email and they suggested watering more often and said my lighting must be the problem. We have over 20 houseplants in our home and they do fine, so this doesn't make sense. They told me I'm not eligible for a replacement or refund and claimed it's my fault. That's $180 down the drain. Do not waste your money on trees or anything else from this company.
Poor management and misleading descriptions. I bought a Showcase Chinese Elm that was listed as 18-24 inches tall. The actual tree is only 12 inches, and with the pot it comes to under 16 inches total. Their suggestion? Send it back but pay for packing and shipping yourself. The photos on their website are deceiving too, showing perfectly shaped trees at their maximum sizes. What you get is a bonsai that needs tons of work to look anywhere near the pictures. When I complained, they said the description mentions it won't look like the photos. That's not good enough. Their customer service is unprofessional and they don't stand behind anything. Steer clear of this company.
I reached out within the warranty window after getting a plant that was nearly dead and sent pictures of it. They said it looked normal and told me to contact them again in a few weeks when my warranty would be expired. From what I've read in other reviews, this seems to be their standard practice and they don't actually honor warranties.
If you want a living plant, look elsewhere. Everything here arrives dead. Find a different seller with better track records.
I think people rating this one star haven't really done their homework on what they're buying. I placed my order on July 19th and it got here by July 25th. The packaging was incredible and the tree arrived in perfect condition, looking really nice too. It was a gift for my girlfriend who'd been wanting a bonsai forever and she's thrilled with it.
Complete waste of money. Never got the product delivered. They kept telling me it was shipped but nothing ever came.
Ordered a couple of Fukien flowering tea trees and they showed up in terrible condition. Both were basically dead on arrival with bugs crawling all over them and white fungal growth coating the leaves. The dirt was frozen solid. These were supposed to be Christmas presents but there's no way I could give them like that. Steer clear of this company.
Got a bonsai to give as a present and most of the leaves were already gone when it arrived. All the remaining foliage looked dry and brown. They tried to say it was just normal leaf drop after shipping and because of the season, but honestly the tree appears dead. Their policy requires you to cover shipping costs to send it back if you want a refund. Would not suggest buying from this company.
Wish I had checked this site out before ordering. Eastern Leaf advertises that they use heat packs for shipping to cold places, but mine went to Minnesota when it was freezing and there was zero protection. When my package showed up, the soil was actually frozen. I checked with a thermometer and it read about 36 degrees, and I was home to grab it right away. UPS kept delaying and rescheduling too. Called Eastern Leaf and all they did was ask me to send pictures like everyone else mentions, no apology or anything. Still waiting to hear back after submitting those photos. A company that stands behind what they sell should fix this kind of shipping failure right away. This whole thing cost me hundreds of dollars on top of an already pricey plant, and I'm just hoping I eventually get some kind of replacement.
Be careful with this one. Got a juniper and a couple months later it's on its way out, covered with insects and the company gives no real help. I sent lots of pictures documenting the decline and all they did was give me suggestions. I followed everything they said but the tree keeps getting worse. Skip this company, they don't actually stand by what they sell.
Not what was advertised. The website pictures show plants with flowers in full bloom. I ordered expecting the same thing, but what arrived was just a bunch of green foliage with nothing else. When I contacted them asking where the flowers were, they said it wasn't the right time of year and that I'd need to make it flower myself. I definitely would've passed on this order if I'd known about that detail upfront.
