Promo Code Not Working? Try This

  • The code may have expired or may only apply to specific categories of books or collectibles, so verify the offer details before applying.
  • Some codes require a minimum purchase amount, so check the fine print to confirm your cart total qualifies.
  • The code may not work if it has already been used by your account or if you have exceeded a per-customer limit.
  • Certain items such as pre-orders, special editions, or rare collectibles may be excluded from promotions.
  • The code may be case-sensitive or may require you to remove extra spaces, so enter it exactly as listed.
  • Clear your browser cache and cookies, then try again, as technical issues sometimes prevent codes from registering properly.

Powell's Books receives polarized feedback, with shoppers split between strong enthusiasm and significant frustration. Five-star reviewers praise the quality of books purchased, fast shipping, and attractive presentation, highlighting the store's ability to deliver satisfying reading experiences. However, one-star and two-star reviewers report serious problems with the used book buying program, including rejected books, low payoffs (sometimes under 70 cents per book), refusal to return unsold inventory, misleading policies about payment methods (store credit only, not cash), website crashes during transactions, inconsistent inventory, and unreliable service that shoppers say has degraded over time.

The core complaint centers on Powell's used book buying experience: customers report that the store's website and policies are unclear or contradictory, acceptance rates are extremely low, compensation is minimal, and the company fails to return rejected books or honor stated terms. Multiple reviewers note that selling books elsewhere (such as eBay) yields better returns. While new book purchases appear to satisfy customers, the used book program generates significant dissatisfaction and distrust.

Sent over 30 books and they rejected all but 3. The three they accepted were in terrible shape and they paid less than 70 cents per book. Now they're refusing to return the rest. I should have gotten paid around 32.50 total. As a single parent who needed money urgently for car repairs, this has been devastating. All my books were in good shape with dust jackets and most were first editions. Now I have no books and no payment.

POWELL'S IS AMAZING! I bought the paperback 'The Oregon Trail Diary of Esther Belle Hanna 1852' and absolutely loved it. The book quality was outstanding. Shipping arrived quickly. The cover features gorgeous historical artwork from an 1849 oil painting depicting Fort Laramie. The diary itself is authentic with a beautiful glossy finish.

There's a disconnect with Powell's book selling program. Their website says they will buy your books and mentions the option to sell used books in stores or online. However, the fine print reveals they only offer store credit, no cash or PayPal. That's not really buying books - it's asking people to donate their books in exchange for a gift card to shop with them later. That's misleading marketing.

This merchant repeatedly breaks promises about used book conditions and buying policies. They constantly shift their rules around and then don't even follow them. We've lost all confidence in them. Their inventory keeps getting worse too - I can never find the books I want, even though other sellers have them readily available. The website is painfully slow to boot. Powell's used to be decent, but now they're unreliable and we can't trust what they say. They're not quite as sketchy as Amazon third-party vendors yet, and stopping their Amazon sales was smart, but they need to earn back customer trust. Since we need honest service, we've switched to more dependable sellers. We won't be returning to Powell's.

It's disappointing what's happened to this once-independent bookstore after expanding. It's completely different from what it was two decades ago. Their shelves now are mostly new releases with very little vintage stock. Also, DO NOT bring your used books there to sell. You'll actually get more money listing them on eBay. They quit offering cash for trade-ins and now only do in-store credit, which they price way too low. I used to enjoy visiting Powell's City of Books, but I've decided to shop elsewhere. There are other independent shops out there with better selection, superior service, and genuine customer care.

I move a huge volume of books - we're talking serious quantities. Powell's was reliable up until about 8 months back, then things went downhill fast. Their site became absolute garbage and they've done nothing to fix it. When you input books for sale and accept their offer, the site crashes. You try again and the system will only take about two-thirds of them. You accept anyway hoping to salvage time, but it crashes again. On the third attempt, another portion gets rejected and it times out once more. Until Powell's modernizes and actually repairs their broken system, I'm taking my business elsewhere. Don't waste your effort trying to work with them.

Fantastic customer service! We had a shipping problem that was actually on our end, but Powell's took care of it and made things right!

Jennifer K.Mar 9, 2021

Excellent customer service experience! We had an issue with delivery that was actually our mistake, but Powell's stepped up and fixed it for us right away.

What I love most about buying books is browsing around, but that's not possible when the store is shut down. Their online system worked pretty smoothly though, and I was able to grab my order from the curb without any issues. However, I did learn they decided not to stock a particular title due to social media backlash, which I'm not thrilled about.

Angela W.Jan 14, 2021

Powell's is striking a middle ground by offering a particular book online while excluding it from physical locations. I respect their choice to find common ground in such a divided climate.

Michelle W.Jan 14, 2021

Powell's is finding a balanced approach by offering a certain title online while keeping it out of physical locations. I think their compromise decision shows good judgment during these divisive times.

George N.Jan 12, 2021

A bookstore that talks about supporting free speech while banning a book it disagrees with. That's a real contradiction.

Chris H.Oct 22, 2020

The website is absolutely terrible if you're trying to sell books. After just a couple minutes of typing in ISBNs, the whole thing crashes and you lose everything. If your transaction takes longer than 5 minutes, you have to start from scratch. This is completely unacceptable.

Patricia F.Jun 18, 2020

Powell's Bookstore is by far the worst online retailer out there. They charge you, then never send your books. They ignore your emails completely. The order tracking link they gave me was broken. I can't even log into their website or reset my password. At this point, I'm switching back to Amazon, which honestly makes me sad.

Elizabeth M.Jan 5, 2020

They're not buying used books, they're taking them. I've sent them plenty of items over time. They fabricate reasons about bad condition and claim the books get discarded. I know what I'm sending is quality. They're basically stealing books. Don't sell to them. They won't honor the quote they give you. They falsify condition assessments to avoid paying fair prices. They make no attempt to document anything, just toss books out, yet those same books somehow end up on their shelves for sale.
