What Shoppers Say About Icelandair
Icelandair receives highly polarized reviews, with shoppers either reporting severely negative experiences or positive ones. Negative reviewers consistently cite poor luggage handling, strict baggage policies enforced to extreme precision, overbooking issues, flight cancellations without proper refunds, stranded passengers, and confusing website booking functionality. Many one-star reviewers describe these as among the worst airline experiences they have encountered, even compared to budget carriers. A substantial segment of five-star reviewers exists but provided no detailed feedback in available excerpts to clarify what drives their positive ratings.
The airline appears to struggle with operational consistency, customer service responsiveness, and transparent communication around refunds and policies. Complaints suggest passengers feel they are being nickel-and-dimed through strict baggage enforcement and incomplete compensation for disruptions. The recurring theme across negative reviews is that Icelandair's service quality does not justify its pricing relative to competitors like SAS, British Airways, and American Airlines.

Sorted by: Most recentAbsolutely horrible. I flew Dublin to Reykjavik to Chicago yesterday and they lost my manual wheelchair at the Reykjavik airport. Now I'm stuck using an airport wheelchair that I can't even propel myself and has zero cushioning, so I'm putting a hotel pillow under me which is really dangerous when you need proper pressure relief. No idea when my actual chair will show up. This is completely unacceptable customer service.
My family and I flew on October 29th. We got our boarding passes at the desk, checked in our luggage, and cleared security fine. But at the gate I was stopped because my ticket wasn't showing as valid in their system. My wife and kid went ahead and got on the plane. The gate people admitted they had accidentally erased my information from their records, but then did absolutely nothing to fix it. Their only suggestion was to kick my wife and kid off too, which we obviously refused. I ended up staying in Frankfurt. My wife said my assigned seat stayed empty the whole flight. What really got me was how completely unconcerned Icelandair was about the whole mess. If you have other options, skip this airline.
I was sitting early at the gate for my Copenhagen flight and watched a gate agent talk down to a guy who had a question. The agent said he couldn't help until he logged into his computer first. The passenger just had an unrelated question but got scolded and accused of being rude. Then a local passenger came up with a question and got treated way more politely. Until Icelandair gets serious about teaching their staff how to be respectful, I'm going somewhere else.
Great experience overall. Both flights were right on schedule, the aircraft were spotless, and every single staff member was friendly and super helpful. All four flights I took in early September went smoothly.
As someone who travels constantly, I've consistently had positive experiences flying this airline and their service is dependable.
Thumbs up to Icelandair for how they handled our cancelled flight! Our Scandinavia to US flight got cancelled in late June as many were. We requested a full cash refund instead of a voucher once they officially announced the cancellation. We received several update emails over the following two months, and just yesterday got the final confirmation that our refund went through to our card. Given what was happening, I'm very pleased with how Icelandair took care of us. I'm definitely going to book with them once things get back to normal. Much appreciated!
Really impressed with how Icelandair handled our situation! Our flight from Scandinavia to the US got cancelled in late June, which we expected. We asked for a full refund rather than a voucher after the cancellation was officially announced. Over the next couple months, we got several routine update emails, and finally yesterday the refund was confirmed and showed up on our card. I'm really satisfied with how they managed everything given the tough circumstances. Definitely flying with Icelandair again once things return to normal. Thanks!
I've been a regular with Icelandair for a long time. Sure, they're strict about changes, like date or name modifications, but that's really industry standard these days. Most carriers have the same policies. I had some flights cancelled due to covid, but if you just follow their instructions on the website, everything is pretty straightforward. A lot of the complaints I read here aren't really fair if you ask me. I fly with them ten or twelve times a year and have never had problems. Airlines are going through rough times, so people need to be more understanding. I absolutely cannot wait to get back in the air with Icelandair. The Saga Class is fantastic and the lounge at KEF is genuinely one of the nicest airport lounges around. Highly recommend them.
My go-to choice for flying across Europe. Schedules are always reliable, the booking system is straightforward to use, and you can add a stopover in Iceland without extra charges, which is fantastic. Plus, spending a few hours in Keflavik between flights is actually a nice break on those long transatlantic journeys.
Had an amazing experience as a family with two adults and three little kids. We travel a lot with our children and this was our first time on Icelandair, flying Boston to Copenhagen with a layover in Reykjavik. The crew members were smiling and genuinely pleasant the entire time we were on board. The children got snacks and entertainment packs. The seatback screens had tons of movies to choose from. Some staff members actually helped us carry our carry-ons off the plane since our hands were full with the kids. When we landed in Reykjavik, one of the flight attendants even came over and offered to grab a stroller for our youngest. We're definitely flying with Icelandair again - they really know how to take care of families!
