Decent software, but bogus billing & support... Avoid.

I have been using various versions of Iolo System Mechanic for well over 20 years...This didn't stop them from taking a fraudulent auto-renewal payment & then refusing to refund it... When I got in touch, they tried to up-sell SMUD, rather than address my concerns or sort out a better price for SMP. They supplied a cancellation link which did not work.I eventually relented & accepted a 3 year deal to upgrade to SMUD, but it turned out the price I was quoted did not include taxes, so they charged me about £19- more than they'd quoted me, in £GBP, rather than the $USD they had quoted me.After messaging with various customer service people & emailing them 3 times (which they ignored), I've had to contact my bank to pursue them for refund of my original bogus auto-renewal.It turns out that the company was bought by a private equity–backed company at some point, which goes some way to explaining the disastrous change in ethos/ethics of the outfit.Avoid.

SM is Not like it used to be

I've been SM user for 18-19 years. SM is Not like it used to be. It used to be simple and straightforward. Now SM seems bloated. I dunno guys....but I really liked SM. I mean I get 'change needs to follow with technology.' Not your fault at all but still, I feel I being bombarded with all SM offers and such.

This company's only response to the disastrous destruction of my PC was to cancel my subscription!

I have used Iolo's System Manager (SM) for several years and have been very satisfied with it. But recently, just after SM had loaded a new version, I received a gleeful email on my phone from them informing me that the program had removed 1.19 TERABYTES (NOT mbytes!) of internet junk and 36.58 mbytes of Windows junk from my PC. But, when I came to boot up the PC - NADA! And all attempts to restore the PC to working order failed. So. On 22 March 2026, I wrote to them expressing deep concern and expressing the view that I wouldn't be using SM until Iolo could assure that the program would not cause a similarly disastrous situation. Iolo's immediate response (same day) was to cancel my subscription! I then had an email from Jessica Mendoza of SM inviting me to contact Iolo to create a tech ticket and for one of their senior technician (should that be wrecknicians?) for a telephone conversation. I wrote accepting this and suggested two dates when I would be in all day to receive a call. Nobody phoned. I have given a trustpilot score of one star - but wish I could give negative stars for this company's complete lack of support. And I advise others thinking of using SM to seriously consider against it. It has required my reinstalling Windows from scratch and reloading all my usual programs.
