What Shoppers Say About Oceanstatejoblot
Ocean State Job Lot has a deeply divided customer base. Some shoppers praise exceptional employee service and describe welcoming, family-like atmospheres at certain locations (particularly the Bennington store), noting that staff go the extra mile to help. However, the majority of recent reviews describe serious issues: billing problems where customers claim they were overcharged or never received advertised gift cards, unresponsive customer service with long hold times and unanswered emails, significant order delays beyond stated timeframes, and hostile interactions with staff at some locations. Multiple reviewers report feeling the store operates dishonestly, with one customer losing eight hundred dollars due to a refund error.
The store's issues appear systemic rather than isolated incidents, with patterns of poor communication, failed promotions, and inconsistent service quality across locations. While a small segment of shoppers have excellent experiences tied to specific staff members or store locations, the overall trend suggests customers struggle with fulfillment reliability, billing accuracy, and customer service responsiveness.

Sorted by: Most recentThis felt like a complete scam and I won't be back. They were running a promotion where you spend thirty dollars and get forty percent back as a gift card. Not only did I never get that gift card, but I was charged an extra forty percent on top of my purchase. I have the receipt showing this happened. I stopped by to talk to someone but nobody picked up the phone. This company needs way better honesty and accountability in how they handle promotions. The customer service was basically nonexistent. Really let down by what I thought would be a legit retail experience.
Had a really bad interaction with someone working at the Deptford location. I asked where I could find an item and she wouldn't even look at me or answer, just pointed somewhere vague. While I was searching, she came up behind me with her cart and said excuse me in the meanest, most sarcastic tone. Then she shot me a disgusted look as she walked past. The management there needs to do better about who they're bringing on board.
I work and shop at the Bennington location and I really appreciate what we've built here. Our team is like a family. Our manager creates such a welcoming and supportive atmosphere that makes everyone want to do their best. At 73, I have to say she treats me incredibly well and that makes me want to show up and put in the effort. This goes way beyond just being a place to buy and sell things. Thanks to our whole group for making it feel like more than just a job.
Had an amazing interaction with two employees last Sunday and they were outstanding. They showed genuine kindness, stayed professional, and really went the extra mile to help me out. It's so rare to see that level of care in a store. Their service was so good that I've gone back multiple times since then. Even picked up a Christmas gift for my son and they helped me get it bagged and loaded into my cart. They even offered to carry it to my vehicle but I couldn't ask them to do more. Just fantastic people working there.
Put in an order for a gazebo on June 3rd and they charged me right away even though their site said delivery would take ten to fourteen days. It's now the seventeenth day and my order still shows processing. Getting through to customer service is a nightmare, you wait on hold forever. They won't respond to emails or call you back if you leave a voicemail. After sitting on hold for what felt like ages, someone told me they're about a week behind and reminded me they're not Amazon. Well, I knew that going in, but seventeen days with an order stuck in processing is ridiculous. My payment sure processed fast though.
This company's lack of honesty cost me eight hundred dollars and endless frustration. I worked with customer service and a local store to arrange a return on a mattress that wasn't working. Since my original card wasn't available, they agreed to put the refund on a different card instead. But when I went to the store, an employee messed up and didn't follow through with what was arranged. After dealing with loads of phone calls back and forth, they refused to take responsibility for the error. I ended up with nothing, no money and no mattress for my baby. I want people to know about their approach to accountability and business practices before they shop there. This was a significant amount of money and I didn't expect to be treated this way. I'm pursuing every option available including small claims court. The stress, wasted time, and financial loss, especially during the holidays, has been really overwhelming.
I shop here and like what they offer but the quality feels inconsistent. Bought an air fryer for around eighty bucks and it gave up after about nine months of use. Then I got a wheelbarrow recently and found out after putting it together that the tube had a hole in it. Ended up having to purchase another tube just to make it usable.
The store has some nice deals available. Lots of bargains to find but you really need to compare prices before checkout. Many items cost less than Amazon but definitely not everything. Some random stuff stays at full retail price, which can be annoying. Greeting cards for instance ring up at the standard retail price printed on the back. That said, if you watch their Crazy Deals section, you can sometimes snag things for basically nothing. Becoming a free Insider Member opens up additional Crazy Deal options where you get back your entire purchase amount as store credit. Same thing with their buy online pickup in store option, though not every item gives back the full amount. Some just have a small credit attached. I shop here roughly every couple weeks so it works for me. If you're not a regular shopper, the Crazy Deals program might not be worth tracking. On the downside, which is why I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5, checkout moves pretty slowly depending on the day, especially if you need to verify a price. The team and registers are friendly enough though not everyone knows their way around all the products.
Absolutely terrible experience with this company. Bought several pedestal fans at the Valatie location and three of them arrived broken. When I asked the store about it, they sent me to contact the manufacturer directly. I called the corporate office instead, and they said they'd handle it. After waiting nearly 5 weeks, I got an email saying replacement parts were ready at the store. Went back and the staff had no clue what I was talking about. Called corporate again and hit a dead end. Sent follow-up emails with zero response. Visited the store again days later since I was nearby, and not only did employees deny they even handle this kind of thing, they acted like I was making it up. I'm out over $60, got treated like a burden by staff, and received absolutely no real help from anyone. Super disappointed in how this company operates.
