Sears Reviews
Sears receives deeply polarized reviews, with 23 shoppers rating the retailer at 3.3 out of 5. More than half of reviewers give five stars, but nearly as many give one star with serious grievances. The primary complaints center on warranty programs (particularly the Cinch warranty for appliances), parts ordering systems, and customer service. Shoppers report incompetent warranty technicians, unresolved appliance issues after multiple claims, backordered parts with no communication, and difficulty processing returns. The parts ordering website specifically draws criticism for inaccurate inventory information and lack of order transparency.
Shoppers who encounter problems express frustration with the inability to reach human customer service representatives and difficulty navigating returns, especially for higher-priced items like apparel. The disconnect between website promises and actual service delivery appears to be a consistent pain point. For those giving five-star ratings, positive experiences likely exist but are not detailed in recent reviews, creating a stark contrast in customer satisfaction that suggests Sears experiences either very good or very poor interactions with minimal middle ground.
Warranty Program Is Not Worth It. The warranty they offer for appliances is really disappointing and not recommended. Don't throw your money away like we did. We're going to invest instead and use other options like online reviews when we need repairs or just buy new. Most of their warranty technicians are incompetent and dishonest. This tech called my spouse's phone and hung up before he could answer, then texted saying we'd missed him. We have security cameras and there's no footage of him anywhere on the property. This would have been his second visit for the same problem. My spouse actually took time off work for nothing. Getting a supervisor is basically impossible. Everything gets handled through automated systems or text. The people texting are trained to rush you off in under a minute. I'm filing a complaint with the CFPB. We've been paying for almost five years and this is how we're treated. Don't get their warranty. It's a scam. Even after you've paid more than enough for a replacement, they won't replace anything. They'll make you wait months searching for old parts to fix instead.
Warranty Company Keeps Disappointing. This is the second warranty claim I've filed this year through the Cinch program. My dryer broke down in February and the exact same issue happened again in December. Both times I scheduled an appointment online through their system and received countdown texts as the date approached. Today I got a text saying they had to reschedule due to staffing changes in my area. I called upset and the rep said it's better to schedule through an agent since their system isn't always accurate. Apparently it lists Saturday appointments even though techs don't work weekends. I suggested they add notes about that, and he agreed but said upper management would have to approve it. Now I'm waiting another two weeks like I did in February. This is unacceptable. Customers shouldn't pay a deductible upfront for appointments that aren't actually guaranteed. They've really declined. It's honestly heartbreaking.
Totally Botched - Really Let Down. Used to be a solid company but now they mess everything up. I'm referring to their parts ordering system called Searspartsdirect. They're awful. I bought a replacement vacuum hose and was told delivery would be around a week away. A couple days later though, I got an email saying the part was backordered with no estimate for when they'd have it. I went to their website and clicked CANCEL ORDER and got a response that they'd reach out to their suppliers to check if canceling was even doable. This for an item they already informed me wasn't available. I clicked CANCEL the next day and got the identical response. On the fourth day, the CANCEL button was gone, so I phoned them and spent around fifteen minutes stuck in their automated menus that definitely don't want to put you through to someone. I finally reached a person who promised me a complete refund and sent me a confirmation. That didn't happen. I got another email about a much smaller refund and then today two emails each showing a partial credit. I ended up losing over a dollar in the process, but honestly you cannot count on these people to get anything right. They clearly have no idea what they're doing.
What a Disaster - Disappointed in Sears. I'm talking about their parts ordering website. It's honestly terrible. I needed a replacement vacuum hose and they said it would arrive in about a week. Then after a few days, an email showed up saying the item was out of stock with no clue when it'd come back. I went online and hit the CANCEL ORDER button, and instead of just canceling it, they sent me a message saying they'd have to check with suppliers to see if cancellation was even possible. This was for something they already told me wasn't in stock! I tried canceling the next day and got the same runaround. By day four the cancel option disappeared, so I called them and spent forever navigating their phone system that seems designed to keep people from reaching an actual human. Finally got through to someone who assured me I'd get a full refund with a confirmation email. Guess what didn't happen. First I got an email about a smaller refund, then two separate emails each crediting a partial amount. By the end of it all, I was short about a dollar. You just can't rely on them to handle anything correctly anymore.
Online Jacket Purchase Became Frustrating. I purchased an expensive leather jacket from the Sears website. I followed their size chart closely but the jacket turned out to be much too tight. When I tried to return it, they made everything so difficult. There's no way to speak with a real customer service representative and their online chat doesn't actually work. I got a recording that told me to contact a third party, which turned out to be Sears Marketplace. A representative said he'd get Sears to send me a return form, but instead I just got an email requesting a photo. I attempted to send it but the email address rejected my attachment. Since then, nobody has replied and I'm quickly running out of time to return it. I'm completely done shopping with Sears.
Expensive Purchase Turned into Nightmare. I bought a pricey leather coat through the Sears website. I used their sizing chart to pick the right size but the coat fit way too snug. I wanted to send it back but they made it difficult at every turn. You can't talk to an actual person at Sears and their live chat is basically nonexistent. I got a recording saying I had to reach out to a third party, which I did. Someone from Sears Marketplace said he'd have Sears send me a return authorization, but all I received was an email asking for a photo. I tried uploading it but the email kept bouncing back. Now nobody's getting back to me and my return deadline is running out. I'm done with Sears for good.
Long-Time Customer Feeling Forgotten. I've shopped at Sears for nearly fifty years. I've always preferred Kenmore products and own almost everything from them including garage door openers, lawn equipment, and power tools. I've kept up with the maintenance plans the whole time. I've never been so disappointed as I am right now. My oven is thirty-seven years old and barely needed anything except maybe a replacement knob or heating element here and there. My dishwasher served me well for twenty-one years until the control panel broke and couldn't be replaced. I've gone through two dishwashers, two fridges, and two washer-dryer sets over the years. Getting replacements was always a hassle, but this latest experience is just ridiculous. Under their old policy they'd swap things out for equal value, but now even with my old agreement, they only offer five hundred dollars toward a replacement. My delivery date was supposed to be in August. I sat around all day and nobody called to say they didn't get it. Every phone call leads to multiple transfers. I still haven't received a call with a new delivery date. The most recent person I spoke with was overseas and couldn't provide any information about when my dishwasher might arrive.
Complete No-Show Disaster. I would give them zero stars if that option existed. I had two repair appointments booked for today. They didn't show up for the first one without even a call. When I checked online to see what was happening with the second appointment, I found out they'd rescheduled it for a week later without asking me. They're terrible. I canceled both appointments and I'm going somewhere else. Their service is nonexistent.
Bad Experience and Poor Support. The technician spent three calls just talking on the phone. I even told him to call back later but he wouldn't stop. My mother was in the other room with her three dogs, and we had to keep them in a room for safety during his visit. On top of that, he basically blamed me for my own problem. My home warranty sent Sears out to help and his report was really unprofessional. Because of his opinion, they denied my claim. I finally asked him to leave and continue his calls somewhere else. Sears makes quality products but their repair service is disappointing. This wasn't my first negative encounter with them. UPDATE: The technician claimed my compressor was failing and Sears wanted $2000 to fix it. I got a second opinion from another certified appliance company and they fixed the whole thing in five minutes. Turns out the water filter I had installed was just screwed on too tight. He loosened it and problem solved. I won't trust Sears for repairs ever again. Those techs are just terrible. They should reimburse the $130 service fee I had to pay to the other company. This was covered under my home warranty so I should've only paid the $65 deductible.
Website Makes Cancellation Impossible. I regret ever using this website. They immediately mark things as shipped so you can't cancel, but then take over a week to actually send it out. You're locked in by then. That's basically a con. We all have credit cards and can dispute charges, so good luck trying to recover your merchandise. Stay away from this site.
Website Easy to Use and Complete. The Sears website is really well designed and had everything I was searching for. I recommended Sears to my friends and family and they've all had good experiences too.
My Mother's Old Freezer Lasted Forever. Back in the early seventies, my mom got herself a Sears Coldspot upright freezer, seven feet tall and frostless. Mom passed away three decades ago, but that freezer just kept going and going. It finally gave up last week. I did have to defrost it once a year for the last several years, but honestly when it quit this last time, I nearly broke down crying. It kept trying to power back on but kept tripping the breaker, like it was putting up a fight. I think something with the old cord was causing the issue and there was no way to fix it. That freezer meant so much to me growing up with it. I doubt I'll ever own another appliance that comes close to lasting this long. It had to be somewhere between forty-five and fifty years old and never once gave me problems.
Customer Service Came Through. I ordered a makeup organizer and the delivery service damaged it during shipping. I reached out to customer service and they were really responsive. They agreed to send me a replacement at no extra charge.
Wonderful Experience at Store. I bought a fridge from a Sears location in Texas and the store manager came in on her day off to help me with the replacement. She gave me tons of information about the new refrigerator and walked me through the entire process of swapping out my old one. I just want to give a big thanks to Joanne for stepping up and going above and beyond. She's an excellent manager and totally deserves recognition.
Fantastic Local Store Experience. Our Sears in Oregon is exactly what a hometown store should be. Thea is incredibly friendly and caring, and she really took the time to help us figure out what we needed for our appliances. We truly appreciate her help as we set up our new place.
