Zipcar Savings Hacks
New members often receive both a signup bonus and a discounted first-year membership rate. Combine these offers by signing up for an annual plan to maximize your initial driving credits and reduce upfront costs.
Compare the total cost of monthly and annual membership options, factoring in any promotional credits. Annual plans frequently offer better long-term value if you plan to use Zipcar regularly.
Bonus miles or driving credits typically have no expiration during your membership. Plan your trips strategically to use these credits before switching plans or upgrading your membership.
Zipcar regularly updates its promotions for new users. Check RetailCoupons.com frequently to catch limited-time signup bonuses that may offer better value than standing offers.
Zipcar Shipping Policy
Zipcar is a membership-based car-sharing service, so traditional shipping does not apply. Your membership benefits and driving credits are activated digitally once your account is approved, typically within one to two business days.
Zipcar Returns & Refund Policy
Zipcar memberships are service agreements rather than physical products. Review the membership terms and cancellation policy on zipcar.com to understand any fees or conditions related to pausing or canceling your account.

Zipcar Reviews
Zipcar is rated 2.4 out of 5 by 23 shoppers, with reviews heavily skewed toward one-star ratings. Shoppers report serious concerns about unauthorized charges, particularly application fees withdrawn without explicit permission, hidden fees buried in fine print, and overage charges for mileage that significantly exceed standard rental costs. Vehicle cleanliness and maintenance are also cited as ongoing issues, with customers describing cars as dirty and smelling poorly. Customer service interactions have been criticized as rude and unhelpful when problems arise.
On the positive side, some customers report excellent experiences, particularly praising staff who go above and beyond to help with specific requests and noting that vehicles can be well-maintained and competitively priced in certain locations. However, these favorable experiences are far outweighed by complaints about pricing relative to competitors, lack of transparency in fees and policies, and overall service quality concerns.
I wish I could rate this lower. The vehicle we needed wouldn't turn on, so we reached out to support. The representative told us the battery was dead, but was extremely rude about it and actually told us to quit talking.
I never even completed my application, yet they still charged me an application fee. When I asked for a refund for this unauthorized charge, they said no.
These people are crooks. Do NOT register for this service. They withdraw funds from your bank account for an 'application fee' without getting your permission first.
Had an outstanding experience using Zipcar in Gran Canaria. The staff member went above and beyond to help us track down our accommodation when we were having trouble finding it. Their vehicles there have always been in great shape and the rates are solid.
I'd avoid Zipcar for these reasons:- Hidden charges from small print, slight lateness fees, and other tricky policies happen constantly.- Pricing is way above the competition.- Miles overage charges are insanely high when compared to standard rental plus fuel costs.- Vehicles smell terrible and are perpetually dirty from lack of proper cleaning and maintenance.- The app constantly has problems with locking, unlocking, and finishing trips, which gets old fast.- Documenting the car with photos inside and out doesn't make sense, especially at night or in rain.- If your phone battery dies, you're stuck without GPS.- On the bright side, their chat support is fairly responsive and will connect you to an actual person if you push for it, though they usually aren't much help. I've done four rentals from June through October and it's been a consistent letdown.
Several reasons why you should skip Zipcar:- You'll get hit with tons of hidden fee charges from fine print, being just slightly late, and other sneaky tricks. - Their rates are way higher than what you'd pay elsewhere. - They overcharge massively for extra miles compared to what a normal rental plus fuel would cost. - The cars are always filthy and reek because they don't clean or maintain them regularly enough. - Their app constantly glitches when locking/unlocking and ending reservations, which is really frustrating. - They make you take photos of the car inside and outside to document it, which is a hassle in bad weather or after dark. - If your phone dies, you're stuck without navigation. The one plus I'll mention is their chat support does respond fairly quickly and you can get a live person if you insist on it, though they usually aren't very useful. I've rented with them four times between the middle of the year and late fall, and it's been consistently disappointing.
AVOID ZIPCAR AT ALL COSTS. I've been a paying customer for many years with no issues until one day. I picked up a car with a flat tire that I didn't spot initially. Five minutes into driving I realized the problem and had to end my trip. Then I got a bill for 165 pounds. They essentially require you to do a 45-minute walkthrough of every vehicle before you leave or they'll bill you for whatever they feel like, whether it's your responsibility or not. This place will cost you serious money. SERIOUSLY CONSIDER THIS BEFORE YOU SIGN UP. It's honestly not worth your time or money.
STAY AWAY FROM ZIPCAR. I've been with them for years without problems, but then I grabbed a car that had a flat tire and didn't catch it right away. After about 5 minutes I realized something was wrong and had to cut my trip short. They turned around and hit me with a 165 pound charge. Their policy basically forces you to spend nearly an hour checking every part of the vehicle before you go anywhere, and they'll charge you for basically anything that isn't your fault. It'll drain your wallet fast. Think twice before using them. This company really isn't worth your money.
They charged me 35 pounds just for returning the car one minute past the deadline.
Got slapped with a 35 pound fee just because I brought the car back a single minute late.
I cancelled my subscription but they kept pulling money from my account every single month. Even after calling twice asking for my money back, they charged me again. Don't bother signing up unless you're willing to call and fight for a refund every month after you cancel.
Zipcar completely left me hanging when their car got towed to an impound. They have GPS tracking in the vehicle but refused to tell me where it was. Instead they said to call city services, knowing full well they weren't open on Saturday during a holiday weekend. It felt like they were deliberately keeping me in the dark so daily charges would pile up and they'd profit. I practically had to beg them before they finally told me the location, and then when I called back to double-check the address with another rep, they wouldn't confirm it. We managed to retrieve the car ourselves but had to fork out 156 dollars on top of what we already paid. Zipcar clearly didn't care to help me out and seemed okay with me getting charged every single day. I cancelled right after returning the vehicle and I'm never going back.
Customer service was absolutely disgusting. I called more than 20 times, sent 10 emails, and spent 4.5 weeks waiting with still no resolution. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.
The customer service here is absolutely terrible. I've made over 20 phone calls and sent 10 emails and after 4 and a half weeks still don't have anything resolved. DEFINITELY DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.
