Venmo Reviews
Venmo is rated 1.0 out of 5 by 21 shoppers, with the overwhelming majority expressing serious dissatisfaction with the service. Shoppers report critical issues including funds disappearing during transfers, accounts being placed on hold without explanation, unresponsive customer service and useless chatbots, and prolonged verification problems where the company claims it never received submitted identification documents. Multiple reviewers describe losing hundreds of dollars with no resolution, and note that Venmo's own systems show no record of the transaction while bank statements confirm the money was debited.
Among the few positive comments, one shopper acknowledged that Venmo's support team handled a resolution with professionalism and care, eventually recovering money that had been stuck for months. However, this isolated praise is vastly outweighed by complaints about broken payment processing, unclear error messages with no solutions provided, the contradictory requirement that accounts must be removed from hold status before closure (a status Venmo itself applied), and the company's refusal to take responsibility for missing transfers. Reviewers consistently advise against using the platform for any serious money transfers.
The customer service here is absolutely terrible. Getting someone in person to help with an issue is just not happening. I moved money from my bank account to Venmo and after a week it still hasn't shown up. Their chatbot is completely useless. Plus why do they hang onto your money for so long? When I tried paying someone directly from my connected bank account recently, it didn't work, so I moved the funds into Venmo first. Now they won't release the money to me either. Something's definitely off lately - I never had these kinds of problems before. Venmo being owned by PayPal probably explains a lot, since PayPal is equally frustrating when you need actual help from someone.
Right when I created my account it got put on hold. I never even used it and activating it has been a nightmare. They keep asking for an official ID and I've sent it in many times over weeks. They claim they never got it. Now I just want to shut the whole thing down. Funny thing though - to close the account they say it can't be in hold status. Brilliant logic right there. Why do so many people ask me to send money through this service? Is this some kind of scheme where the first people to join make money off newcomers? This company should be investigated and sued.
Let me state this plainly: Venmo is broken, unreliable garbage that shouldn't be used by anybody who actually needs to transfer money to someone else. I've been trying to pay someone for work they did - real work from a real person - and I keep getting hit with a message saying my payment won't go through. No explanation. No solution. Just incompetence. I already went through their weird fix once: remove your payment method, add it back, hope it works for maybe a week before breaking again. This time I added a completely new verified bank account. Verified by Venmo themselves. Same useless error. They have zero customer support. Their error messages are meaningless. The app is basically designed to stop payments from happening. PayPal owns this and somehow made it even worse than PayPal itself, which seemed impossible. I'm out. Removing everything. The fact that millions of people use this broken mess for actual money transfers is seriously concerning. One star would be too generous. Total trash.
They took $920 from us. This was our first time attempting a bank transfer and we never got the money. Venmo insists their systems are working perfectly and that they delivered our cash. Our bank statements tell a different story. We've already eliminated one account and are in the process of eliminating the second. We've shared our experience in group chats and everyone is ditching it. We're all moving to Zelle and PayPal instead because Venmo refuses to own their mistake and refund our stolen money. A friend of ours had $50 stolen from them as well. It looks like taking money from customers might be their current strategy. We're finished. This scam won't be missed.
They took $920 from us. We tried a bank transfer for the first time and never got it. Venmo says everything's fine on their side and that they sent our money. Our bank records show otherwise. We've already deleted one account and we're working on removing the other. We've been telling everyone in our group chats and they're all dropping it too. Everyone's switching to Zelle and PayPal instead since Venmo won't fix their mistake and return the money that's rightfully ours. A friend of ours also lost $50 to Venmo recently. It seems like stealing from people might be their new business model. We're done with this scam. Won't be back.
I have to say their support team handled things with real professionalism and care. They kept things simple and easy to follow, which made dealing with this way less anxiety inducing than I expected. I was finally able to get back to the money that had been stuck for months.
I was really impressed with how professional and clear their support team was. They made everything straightforward and the whole situation felt way less stressful than I expected. Best part was finally getting access to my money that had been locked away for months.
Two different support reps both told me that the app doesn't function properly, they can't explain why, there's no solution available, and my best option is to remove my account. So that's what I did.
When you need help with a problem, there's nobody to actually talk to. You call and get stuck in an endless loop of automated recordings asking you to press this button or that button. Having no real person available when issues come up is a deal breaker for me, regardless of the company. It's clear they don't care about taking care of their users. I'm moving on from Venmo. While it might work fine initially, eventually something will happen and there won't be anyone there willing to actually assist you.
There's literally no way to reach a human being if something goes wrong. You dial their number and get stuck in an endless loop of prerecorded messages. Press 1 for this, press 2 for that, over and over again. When you actually have a problem, having zero human support available is a complete deal breaker for any company. It shows they honestly don't value their customers. I'm done with Venmo. Sure it might work fine for a bit, but eventually something will go wrong and you'll be completely on your own with no one to actually help you.
There's no way to get ahold of a live representative or even locate an email address for a straightforward inquiry. It's completely ridiculous and frankly making me consider leaving them entirely due to their nonexistent customer support.
It's impossible to reach an actual human or even find an email address for basic questions. This is totally unacceptable and I'm seriously thinking about dropping them just because of how bad their customer support is.
My account got frozen out of nowhere despite having my identity verified and not doing any transactions for over a year. When I contacted support they were dismissive and unhelpful, basically told me to have a good day and hung up in the middle of my sentence without explaining anything about why my account was being locked. After that they permanently deleted it. I'm not recommending this to anyone and won't be using it again.
My daughter tried to create a teen account by following their instructions online. She works somewhere that involves getting payments from people, and two of her customers sent her money to her teen account. When she went to use it, she realized she couldn't access those funds. Venmo told us she'd have to send the money back and request they transfer it to a different account instead. Since she can't actually access it in the first place, she just lost the money due to their confusing directions and problematic system.
I'd give it zero stars if I could but one is the minimum. I wouldn't even give it that. Seriously don't waste your time on this platform, especially with auto reload. Just keep your money in your regular account where you can access it instead, because they'll hold onto it for 5 or more days saying it'll show up on a specific date, and when that date comes around your money still isn't available. If you'd left it in your original account you would've had it. Plus there's this unfriendly support person I dealt with who gave me the complete run around, and the AI on top of that is its own problem. Just skip it entirely. It'll only frustrate you and trap your money when you actually need it. I'm desperate for gas right now and they've got my money tied up. I only have $100 left to my name and I can't get access to it.
