We paid in full for a hotel in Lisbon that was never actually reserved for us. When I got there with my confirmation email, there was no room waiting. I had to spend hours on international calls and lost almost half a day of my vacation trying to sort it out. Great Value couldn't secure the right room type, so I ended up booking and paying for a different hotel across the city myself and had to wait for reimbursement. They did eventually refund me for the extra hotel and Uber costs (nearly 500 Euro), but who wants to shell out that kind of money while on what's supposed to be a relaxing trip? The hotel choices in Porto and Lisbon weren't ideal either - both were pretty far from the city centers with lots of walking involved. My Porto accommodation had a broken air conditioner, and when I complained, all they did was open some safety vents and bring me a fan. The room stayed around 85 degrees the whole time with just that fan running. The staff were nice and apologetic though. One more problem: since I booked through Great Value, I couldn't manage my flight changes myself and couldn't even select a seat next to my travel partner on United flights.
