JC Penney Portrait Studios Reviews
What Shoppers Say About JC Penney Portrait Studios
JC Penney Portrait Studios receives highly polarized reviews, with shoppers either praising individual photographers or expressing serious frustration with management and service. Positive reviewers consistently highlight specific photographers like Wesley and Raven, noting their skill at posing, background selection, professionalism, and ability to work well with children. These satisfied customers report stress-free experiences and long-term loyalty to particular staff members.
Negative reviews cite unprofessional management, disorganization, poor customer service, aggressive upselling of add-ons, scheduling failures, and quality issues with final products. Common complaints include rude staff behavior, long wait times despite confirmed appointments, lack of accountability for booking errors, and concerns about overall cleanliness and professionalism. The stark divide in ratings suggests the quality of experience depends heavily on which location and photographer a customer works with.

Sorted by: Most recentEvery time I go in for photos at JCPenney Portraits, I have such a great experience, and it's because of Wesley. He makes the whole thing enjoyable and stress-free. He really goes the extra mile for all his clients. I love how he photographs my girls. He has an eye for great poses and always picks backgrounds that make their outfits shine. His focus on the small details and his creative approach really shows in the final pictures. What I value most is how professional he is and how much he cares about customer service. If anything goes wrong during a session, he finds a quick fix and keeps everything moving smoothly. That kind of service is hard to find these days. Wesley puts so much care into every session that I felt I owed him this review. Thanks for making our photo experiences so special!
I had a really frustrating experience that I felt needed to be documented. The management was unprofessional, and the overall staff performance was disappointing. I have concerns about the leadership and feel like some training might be needed. When we arrived, things were disorganized from the start with multiple clients being checked in at once and papers everywhere. We waited over an hour just to get a 15-minute photo session, and the photographer was very strict about timing. After the session, we waited another 30 minutes for our photos to be ready. The editing quality was poor. When I looked at the final product, they mentioned it would be re-edited through another service, but this didn't justify the high price. The digital photos I specifically picked turned out to be subpar when delivered. The manager tried to offer coupons as a fix, but it wasn't satisfactory.
This was a terrible experience from beginning to end. Walking in, I got poor customer service that felt unprofessional and unwelcoming. The person at the desk had a strong smoke smell, which made things even more awkward. On top of that, they kept pushing me to buy add-ons I didn't want. The actual products were just as bad. My photos and prints came out blurry, smudged, and nowhere near what I'd expect. For what they charge, this quality is unacceptable. I can't recommend them and think others should look elsewhere for better results.
The manager at the Arkansas location was incredibly rude and arrogant. I had a scheduled appointment with a confirmation email. I showed up 30 minutes early, but the desk was empty. The manager and photographer eventually appeared and walked right past me without saying anything. The photographer did greet me, but the manager interrupted her and just stared at me. When I mentioned my appointment time, he said I didn't have one unless I was someone named Perez or her dog. I showed him my confirmation email, and he made me feel stupid. When I asked his name, he refused and said he didn't like my attitude, even though I was being polite despite being frustrated. He got condescending with me. I asked to speak to a store manager, and he refused and left. I had to find the assistant manager myself to lodge a complaint. Apparently he had something more important to do that night.
I booked an appointment for noon several months ahead of time. When we got there, they'd finished the 11:30 session and should've called us next, but somehow another appointment jumped ahead of us. The 15-minute sessions don't even make sense since photos take way longer than that. By 12:30, we still hadn't gone back. If you're not going to honor your schedule, why have appointments at all? We wasted the whole afternoon waiting. Skip this place unless you've got hours to kill after your scheduled time.
Raven at the mall location is excellent and has such a good eye for details. She works wonderfully with our young boys and we've been going to her regularly for over four years now. The kids actually ask for her by name because they love working with her so much.
I gave my initial review before seeing the final photos, so I need to update that. The staff who took the pictures were really friendly and nice. Once the photos arrived, they looked good overall, but something seemed off with my order. I didn't complain since I was told I could get prints made elsewhere. When I tried ordering additional copies online, most of them showed a low resolution warning no matter what size I picked. That's a big problem. My granddaughter's high school graduation photos were important to me, and I wish I'd gone somewhere else for printing. I won't be recommending this location to anyone.
Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else! We had a family photo appointment at 12:15 at the Virginia location. Even though we were on time, we had to wait nearly two hours. When we finally got to the studio, the camera battery died, so we had to hang around waiting for another photographer to finish with someone else. The whole thing was awful.
This is my second visit to the location in three months. The first time I waited three hours, and this time two hours. That's ridiculous for a baby photo session. They'd bring people back who arrived after me without any communication. This is the last time I'm coming here.
The scheduling here is a disaster. We've been waiting over an hour and a half past our appointment time and there are still two appointments ahead of us. I paid a $25 reservation fee just to sit here being ignored. The customer service is terrible and their time management is even worse.
