Office Depot Reviews
Office Depot shoppers are deeply divided in their ratings. Those giving five stars consistently praise exceptional in-store service, particularly from individual employees who provide personalized attention and technical expertise. Customers highlight positive experiences with tech services and specialized tasks like copying, where staff went above and beyond expectations. However, nearly half of reviewers give one star, citing significant fulfillment and customer service failures. Common complaints include receiving wrong items, misleading shipping notifications that claim items have shipped when they have not, and difficulty reaching customer support to resolve problems. Email support appears unreliable, with messages bouncing back or going unanswered.
The stark divide between five and one star ratings suggests that Office Depot's quality depends heavily on which employee or department handles your transaction. In-store experiences with engaged staff tend to be excellent, while online orders and remote customer service frequently disappoint. Shipping accuracy and notification transparency appear to be systemic issues that frustrate customers who need items urgently for school or work.
Cole at our local Office Depot in Moreno Valley went way above and beyond when I needed copies made. He gave me really personalized attention and made sure I was completely happy with how my order turned out. He definitely exceeded what I would normally expect from someone in his position.
I placed an order for three clipboards but what showed up at my door was a black pencil pouch I never even ordered. Trying to fix this simple mistake turned into a total nightmare. When I called customer support, the system disconnected me right after I picked my options. I sent an email reply to the order confirmation, and it just bounced back to me. I tried the online chat around 1 PM on an afternoon, which should be well within their posted help hours, but there weren't any representatives available and the help section didn't have anything about my situation. It seems impossible to get any help without spending forever on hold. For such a big company, it's really disappointing that their customer service doesn't actually work. I just want the clipboards I paid for, but getting them feels like an impossible task. I shouldn't have to waste hours trying to fix something this straightforward.
The tech service I got at the Alcoa, Tennessee store was honestly the best I've had at any store location. I brought in my computer because I needed help moving data from my old device to a new one, and the situation was tricky since I had two different accounts that needed to stay separate. This employee named Blake helped me get everything set up - my email account, a backup email, security software, and he even walked me through how to move all my photos safely so nothing gets lost. Before I left, he made sure my computer was completely set up and ready to use. I'm an older person and not very good with technology, so I was pretty nervous about the whole thing. But Blake and everyone there was so patient and skilled. They really treated me like they cared about getting everything just right.
The tech team at the Alcoa, TN location gave me service that honestly surpasses anywhere else I've been. I needed help transferring data from my old device to a new one, and the setup was complicated because I had two separate accounts that needed to be split. The employee named Blake spent however long it took to help me set up my email, backup email, security software, and even showed me how to safely move all my photos without losing anything. When I left the store, my computer was completely ready to go with everything already configured. Since I'm older and don't know much about computers, I was really worried about messing something up. But Blake and the whole team there were so patient and professional. I felt like they genuinely cared about getting it right.
I bought an add-on for my Microsoft Surface that I really need for my upcoming class. Office Depot sent me an email the day after I placed the order saying it had been shipped. That wasn't accurate - it hadn't actually shipped yet. The tracking information just showed 'Label Created'. A week and a half later and they're telling me I'll get an update sometime next week. They won't even tell me where the order is or when it might show up. I need this stuff for my class, so at this point I'm thinking I'll have to buy it elsewhere. I need my money refunded. They need to better manage their relationships with their suppliers. A label being created doesn't mean the item has shipped. I'm really annoyed about this whole situation.
I placed an order for a Microsoft Surface attachment that I need ASAP for a class coming up. A day after ordering, Office Depot sent me a notification saying it shipped out. Here's the thing though - it actually never shipped. When I checked the tracking, it only showed 'Label Created'. Now it's been a week and a half since I placed the order, and they're telling me I'll get an update sometime next week. They won't even tell me where the package is or when I might actually receive it. I really need this for my class, so I might have to go somewhere else for it. Just give me my money back. Office Depot needs to stay on top of what their suppliers are doing. Having a label created is nowhere near the same thing as actually shipping something. Really frustrated with this.
I went in to return a price labeling gun made by Office Depot. They said I needed the original packaging since it had a serial number that had to be matched with my receipt. Pure nonsense. Next they told me the return period was over. Also not true. The Office Depot website says their brand items can be returned whenever you want. I was told I absolutely could not return or swap it. I came back the following day to show the Assistant Manager the policy from their website, but neither the manager nor the assistant manager would even look at what I had to show them. Eventually I found a more reasonable assistant manager at an OfficeMax location who did exchange the labeling gun for me. Even though they gave me the replacement, they still kept my original ink roller and the nearly full pack of labels that came with the first one.
I went to the store to return an Office Depot brand price labeling gun I had. The staff told me I had to have the original box because it had a serial number that needed to match my receipt. That was completely false. Then they said it was past the return window. Also completely false. Their own website clearly states that Office Depot brand items can be returned whenever you want. The staff would not budge and said flat out that I couldn't return or exchange it. I went back the next day with the website information pulled up to show the Assistant Manager, but neither the manager nor assistant manager would even listen to what I had to say. I ended up finding a reasonable assistant manager at an OfficeMax location who did exchange it for me. However, they let me keep the original ink roller and almost a full set of labels from the old one.
I do enjoy Office Depot, but I'm leaving one star because they closed the Biloxi, Mississippi location and now getting to a store means a really long drive. If there's any chance they could bring that store back, I'd be so grateful. Thanks for reading this.
I really do like Office Depot, which is why I'm only giving one star for this reason. The store location near me in Biloxi, Mississippi just shut down permanently. Now I have to drive way out of my way to get to the closest one. It would mean so much if they could reopen that location. Really hope they'll reconsider. Thanks.
Really let down by how their customer service handled my situation. A store associate told me my laminated poster would be ready in 2 days and waiting at the store for pickup. That turned out to be completely false. The whole thing took nearly a week, and instead of getting it at the store, it was sent to my house. Then UPS messed up the routing and sent it to another state, so it arrived even later than expected. When it finally showed up, the poster had wrinkles on it. I requested a refund or credit to deal with all this inconvenience, but customer service flat out refused to credit my card. Every time I asked them to put money back on the same card I used to pay, they kept saying they could only give me store credit instead. This whole experience was frustrating.
I paid for a Fedex delivery on Friday, November 22nd and asked if they could do overnight shipping, but apparently that option wasn't available that day. The staff person told me they had two day delivery available and the box would arrive on Sunday, November 24th. I paid the fee and left the package with them. When I tried to check the tracking, it kept saying the label was created but nobody had picked it up yet. I went back to Office Depot to ask what was happening, and they assured me Fedex had already grabbed it on Friday. I called Fedex multiple times and they told me they don't have the package and to check back with Office Depot. Nobody wants to take responsibility, they just keep pointing at each other. The package is now somewhere around Hagerstown and is supposed to show up on November 27th, which is way past when it was supposed to get here. Fedex and Office Depot keep blaming each other and neither one is willing to own the problem. Where is the customer service? I just need a refund since the package definitely didn't arrive by the promised date.
Ordered a chair online and went to pick it up at the store, but when I got there they said it was sold out at that location. The floor model was also gone, even though the website said I could grab it there. They told me instead that the chair was in the warehouse and would be delivered between 6 and 7 PM on the twenty-ninth. So I drove back to my place in Vancouver, Washington. On the way, I got an email saying the chair wasn't available at Office Depot anymore. That meant I had to turn around and go back for my money back. When I got there, the person said it could only be store credit, not a refund. I insisted on getting my money back, and they finally processed it. I asked for some kind of proof, but the worker didn't know how to print one. After another employee got involved, they printed out a screenshot and told me the two hundred sixteen dollars would show up back on my card in about a day or two. It's now July third and still nothing. I've filed a complaint with the BBB and also reported this to the Oregon State Attorney General's consumer protection office. I've shopped at Office Depot in the past, but that's done now. From this point on, I'm going to other big box retailers for office supplies instead.
I used an e-gift card to buy a printer, but it ended up getting shipped to the wrong state through no fault of mine. They did refund the order, but now they're mailing me a gift card in the mail instead. So my options are either reorder it with a regular credit card and end up stuck with a gift card to this company, or hang around waiting three to four weeks for the card to arrive in the mail so I can order again. Save yourself the trouble and shop somewhere else.
I bought a SanDisk external hard drive from Office Depot about 13 months back. About a month ago it just stopped working completely. I took my computer to a repair shop I've used before, and they told me SanDisk has a class action suit going on because these drives started failing around May of 2023. All of my files were lost. SanDisk would have sent me a replacement, but I wasn't interested in getting another defective one. So I decided to call Office Depot. Even though they were just the seller and it was over a year after I bought it, they went ahead and gave me my money back no questions asked. Then I used that refund to buy a Samsung external drive from them instead. I was really impressed with how understanding they were about the whole situation and how they stepped up for me as a customer.
