What Shoppers Say About Basepaws
Basepaws is rated 1.2 out of 5 by 5 shoppers, with the overwhelming majority reporting significant dissatisfaction with the service. Common complaints center on multiple failures in the testing process: samples are rejected as insufficient even after careful collection, customers experience long wait times (six weeks or more) with no communication, resubmitted samples disappear into silence, and when results do arrive, they are frequently inaccurate or so generic as to be useless. Reviewers note instances where test results contradicted known breed information from other sources or their own knowledge as breeders, undermining confidence in the company's testing accuracy and quality control.
No positive themes emerge from available reviews. Customers express frustration with the lack of customer support throughout the process, the unclear collection requirements that lead to sample rejections, and the overall poor value proposition given the cost, long timelines, and unreliable outcomes. The service appears to have failed to deliver meaningful breed identification or DNA insights that justify the investment, leaving reviewers unwilling to recommend Basepaws for dog DNA testing.

Sorted by: Most recentGot this test, collected a sample from my dog, and then the waiting game began. After six weeks they come back saying I did the swabbing wrong. Seriously? They send me another kit, so this time I really go to town with it. And now nothing. No updates, no results, total silence. I'm ready to get my money back and cancel this whole thing. It's such a shame because I was genuinely pumped about finding out my dog's background when I ordered this.
Absolutely frustrated with this experience. I submitted my dog's sample back in November 2025, and by January 2026 they told me it wasn't enough material and needed a new kit. When the replacement arrived, I made sure to get a really good swab from his mouth, even scraped enough to draw a tiny bit of blood. Sent it back, and wouldn't you know it, on March 18th I got yet another email saying the same thing. They blamed it on medications, but my dog isn't on anything. As someone with medical training, I'm confident in my ability to collect samples properly. This company is painfully slow AND incompetent. I've asked for my money back, and if that doesn't happen, I'll be making sure everyone knows about this disaster online. Total letdown.
I ordered five tests for dogs I had bred myself, so I definitely knew what breeds they were. I own the parents, and I even had DNA results from another company already showing 100% poodle for all of them. Then I wait six weeks for results and get some wildly inaccurate info. Four out of the five came back saying they had springer spaniel in them, which makes zero sense since these dogs are purebred poodles. Just to make sure I wasn't crazy, I went ahead and paid another testing company. They confirmed what I already knew, 100% poodle across the board.
I really wouldn't recommend this company for dog DNA testing. My spouse got this for me as a Christmas gift, which was sweet, but the results were basically useless. Everything in that report was so generic it wasn't even funny. They basically told me my dog is a small breed and has some hound ancestry. Like, seriously? I could've figured that out myself just by looking at her since she's 20 pounds and clearly has beagle written all over her. We were hoping for actual percentages, like maybe 25% Beagle and 75% something specific. Instead, we're stuck paying another company that actually knows what they're doing to get real answers.
