What Shoppers Say About HydroBuilder.com
HydroBuilder.com shoppers report a polarized experience. Those satisfied with the store praise its product variety, reliable delivery times, and responsive customer support, with some noting orders arriving faster than promised. However, a significant portion of reviewers experienced serious issues with packaging quality, unclear return policies, unexpected restocking fees on unopened items, and problematic refund deductions that left customers substantially out of pocket. Several shoppers reported difficulty getting support for missing items and frustration with fees that were not clearly disclosed upfront.
The main recurring complaints center on the return process: customers were charged substantial shipping fees for returns (including return shipping deductions), assessed restocking fees on unopened merchandise without clear website disclosure, and faced situations where the company did not follow up on missing items from large orders. The packaging issues noted by some customers resulted in items arriving damaged or unusable, compounding the frustration when return policies made resolution costly.

Sorted by: Most recentAbsolutely terrible experience. They sent my item in poor packaging that made it completely unusable. Sure, technically I can return it, but I have to eat the forty plus dollars in shipping costs. Then they deduct another forty plus dollars from my refund for return shipping on their mistake. That leaves me out eighty dollars and stuck with nothing but frustration. This was a bad decision shopping here and I won't make that mistake again.
Shopped here multiple times. Orders arrive when promised and the product variety beats out most competitors!
I got hit with a twenty percent restocking fee when I tried to return something that hadn't even been opened. The website doesn't make it clear that unopened items get charged this fee. Their policy says unopened items can go back within thirty days except for certain categories, and they mention that refunds come minus shipping and restocking charges where applicable. But nowhere on individual product pages does it say which ones have restocking fees attached. Meanwhile, they explicitly state that opened products have a twenty percent restocking fee applied. On top of everything else, their math was off when they calculated my refund after the restocking fee. They initially said they'd give back the sales tax on the full purchase amount but got the numbers wrong.
Placed a fifteen hundred dollar order with them. Got most of what I ordered, but a case of 12 bulbs never showed up. When I reached out to customer service, they said someone was supposed to contact me about it but never did. Then they hit me with this: the bulbs cost more now than when I bought them. They wanted me to pay extra on top of what I already spent. I was paying forty-eight bucks per bulb when I placed my order, and you can find them at that price everywhere online. HydroBuilder decided to jack the price up to seventy-six bucks each AFTER I already paid for them. That's completely unacceptable. This company operates unethically and I'd steer clear of doing business with them. Total waste of money and time.
Great overall experience with solid customer support and quick delivery. I dropped a fifteen hundred dollar order on a Sunday and got half of it delivered that same day, with the rest coming the next day. Since I ordered such a wide variety of items, my shipment came in three separate packages. What really impressed me was that I could actually call and talk to a real person in their customer support department without jumping through hoops. I had a bunch of questions about my purchase and they answered everything right away. It's those details that separate a good company from the rest. I'm definitely shopping with HydroBuilder again.
They might advertise a huge product selection, but there's a catch. This is essentially a drop shipping operation with no actual inventory. Their listed address doesn't check out either. I've had constant problems with how long things take to ship, especially after paying premium shipping costs because they don't keep current information about what their suppliers actually have in stock. I was about to make a three thousand dollar purchase when they tried to charge me tax. The problem is they don't operate a real facility with their company name in my state, yet they're still charging tax and not offering free shipping even at that order amount. I decided to go with Grower's House instead since I never deal with this kind of nonsense there. Our country already has enough taxes, and companies shouldn't be adding illegal taxes on top of that. Having no warehouse presence in a state and still collecting tax from customers there while only paying tax on in-state sales is dishonest. It's especially wrong when a company has minimal overhead, no warehouse, no inventory to maintain, and few employees. They shouldn't be taking advantage of people who are already stretched thin financially.
