What Shoppers Say About Icelandair
Icelandair receives highly polarized reviews, with shoppers either reporting severely negative experiences or positive ones. Negative reviewers consistently cite poor luggage handling, strict baggage policies enforced to extreme precision, overbooking issues, flight cancellations without proper refunds, stranded passengers, and confusing website booking functionality. Many one-star reviewers describe these as among the worst airline experiences they have encountered, even compared to budget carriers. A substantial segment of five-star reviewers exists but provided no detailed feedback in available excerpts to clarify what drives their positive ratings.
The airline appears to struggle with operational consistency, customer service responsiveness, and transparent communication around refunds and policies. Complaints suggest passengers feel they are being nickel-and-dimed through strict baggage enforcement and incomplete compensation for disruptions. The recurring theme across negative reviews is that Icelandair's service quality does not justify its pricing relative to competitors like SAS, British Airways, and American Airlines.

Sorted by: Most recentNever seen luggage treated this poorly, and I travel constantly for work. I typically fly SAS, British Airways, and American, always with the same bags, and I've never experienced anything close to this. I've even had better experiences with budget carriers. They were weighing bags down to the gram and measuring to the millimeter like it was some kind of game. It was infuriating. I'm totally fine paying for what I owe and I always do, but this was completely out of line. Icelandair is done for me.
It's hard to believe this company is even operating. They basically robbed me of over $900 and left me stranded in Iceland. My connection through Reykjavik became impossible to make because of the long immigration line. When I spoke with an unhelpful service representative, she told me my return flight had been cancelled and wouldn't be refunded either.
This was absolutely the worst flying experience my spouse and I have ever had. We were heading to Iceland for a wedding and booked everything months in advance. When we arrived at the gate early and ready to board, staff informed us the flight was oversold and they only had a single available seat. They basically said one of us should just go alone and only that person would get the legally required compensation. Since I had made all the reservations for our hotel and car, their suggestion was that I should leave my wife behind. The gate staff refused to budge and then simply walked away. We got rebooked a full day later. Getting the minimum legally mandated payment took forever - months of back and forth communications before we finally received compensation for just one of us. The whole ordeal was devastating and Icelandair should be genuinely embarrassed by how they treated us.
They wouldn't let me board my flight to Vancouver. The staff at the gate said my ticket would be refunded, but then later they changed their story and only gave back the airport taxes. Pretty disappointing experience and the communication was really poor.
I used to look forward to flying with Icelandair, but things have gone downhill fast. Their Saga Class is acceptable but pricey, and Economy has gotten worse while staying expensive. We were stuck in the rear section of a cramped cabin with almost no legroom. During the drink service, I politely asked the person ahead of us to put their seat back up so we could open our tray tables, and they were fine with it. But then a tense flight attendant came over acting really agitated. She said reclining is everyone's right and I shouldn't have said anything to the other passenger. She put their seat back down and even tried to recline ours despite us saying no, getting uncomfortably close to us. She then went on a rant about how everyone should keep their seats reclined, even while eating, because that way there's plenty of room for everyone - ignoring the fact that the last row behind us can't recline at all. The whole interaction was unnecessarily hostile and unwelcoming.
This has got to be the most frustrating website I've ever tried to use. Spent a solid two hours trying to get a round trip from Boston to Edinburgh for March booked, and my schedule is totally flexible. The whole process was a nightmare. One moment dates show they have spots, the next they don't, then suddenly they do again. There's no option to check out nearby dates like you get on other booking sites. The whole thing is outdated and basically broken. I thought stopping in Iceland would be fun, but after reading everything else here about how this airline runs, it looks like their website is just a preview of all the other problems. No thanks.
Pretty stingy operation with serious reliability issues. My wife and I have flown their economy cabin on a couple occasions and they're honestly the cheapest airline in terms of what you get. Nothing is complimentary and they seem annoyed if you ask for something basic like a blanket. Service is quite poor. We decided to try again on a flight from Istanbul to Washington DC in their Saga business class despite our past reservations. I had watched some YouTube clips that made their gin selection sound really appealing. Then completely without warning they scrapped both legs of the trip, spaced out a week apart. That just added insult to injury because we had already changed our plans for the first leg when we found out the second one was getting cancelled too. Plus they never bothered notifying us about the first cancellation. I only caught it by logging into the website and pulling up my booking. Really glad I stayed on top of things! Only book these guys if visiting Iceland is a must.
Got what you pay for and nothing more, with sketchy reliability. My partner and I have taken Iceland Air in economy before, and honestly it's the stingiest carrier I've come across. They won't give away anything for free and act like you're asking too much if you want a blanket. The service is honestly pretty bad. Even knowing this, we booked again but this time paid for their Saga business class seat from Istanbul heading to Washington DC. I had watched some videos about their special gin offerings and was really looking forward to it. Then out of nowhere they cancelled both legs of our trip, a week apart no less. This made it worse because we rearranged plans for the first leg, then discovered the second cancellation was coming too. And get this - they never even sent a heads up about the first cancellation. I only found out because I went to the website and checked my reservation status. So glad I did that! Unless you're really set on seeing Iceland, I'd pass on this airline.
We paid extra to get extra legroom seats right next to each other. At the gate, they suddenly said I was on a standby list, even though my partner wasn't. Then they boarded me last and stuck me in a middle seat between two strangers, way back from where my partner was sitting in the exit row that he paid for. There was a passenger with a broken arm in the seat I was supposed to get, which seems unsafe for an exit row. When I complained, they said they'd look at the price difference but didn't really care. I never would have paid the upgrade to sit in the middle away from my partner. Icelandair clearly doesn't care about their customers.
