Penningtons Reviews
What Shoppers Say About Penningtons
Penningtons receives overwhelmingly negative feedback, with shoppers reporting serious issues across both online and in-store experiences. The most common complaints involve poor customer service responsiveness (particularly with unresolved issues that drag on for months), product quality concerns (including control-top hosiery that fails to perform, garments developing holes after minimal wear, and reinforced features being removed while prices remain high), and website ordering problems (unresponsive customer service when orders go wrong, strict no-cancellation policies, and undelivered packages). A small number of shoppers praise in-store experiences when assisted by specific staff members, noting personal attention and helpful service.
The contrast between occasional positive in-store interactions and widespread complaints about online ordering, product durability, and customer service resolution suggests that Penningtons struggles most with e-commerce operations and quality control. For a specialty plus-size retailer, shoppers express frustration that pricing does not match product longevity or performance, and that the company lacks flexibility when issues arise.

Sorted by: Most recentReally let down by their return process. I spent about $1000 and needed to return around $350 worth of items. Since I was four days late getting them back within the 30-day window, I only got a credit note instead of my money back. I also bought bathing suits that dropped to 30% off after I purchased them, but they wouldn't apply the discount because they weren't within the two week mark. It was disappointing and discouraging. I'm going to try to avoid shopping here in the future, even though I do like the clothing itself.
Bought winter boots in late September and they completely fell apart by the end of December. Since I wear larger sizes, I have to shop ahead because most stores don't stock many big sizes. These boots cost $150 and only lasted three months, which is unacceptable. Penningtons refused to exchange them, refund me, or acknowledge any defect. They said their policy only covers 60 days, but a $150 boot should definitely last longer than three months without failing. This wasn't normal wear and tear. I'm really disappointed that other retailers don't carry wide fitting shoes in large sizes because I would have gladly shopped elsewhere. Save your money and look for a store that actually stands behind faulty products.
The Reitman group has controlled the plus size clothing market in Canada for decades. While Additionelle showed some promise with updated styles and decent customer service before they shut down all their stores in the late 2010s and moved everything online, it eventually got absorbed back into Penningtons. If you order something that's not in stock that exact day, they silently cancel your order without telling you. When you reach out to ask about it, you'll get a cancellation notice and your payment will be charged, then refunded three days later. Chat support will offer a price adjustment on your cancelled order, but only if you place a completely new order and give them both order numbers. Basically they make you do all their work and claim they can't just reprocess the original order even when everything is now in stock. Shopping for plus sizes online is already difficult enough without this nonsense.
Got a damaged item that was unwearable. Had all the original packaging and went to the store where we bought it to ask for a refund, but they refused. They claimed we needed to contact Canada Post for some reason which made no sense at all. My elderly mother lost $50-60 because of their poor service. Will never shop at a Penningtons location again. The staff was unprofessional and it felt like a complete ripoff. Do not shop here.
Your online system is terrible. The chat person wasn't helpful at all and I ended up canceling my order because I got so frustrated. The system only lets you change your billing address, not your shipping address, which makes no sense. Do you even care that you're losing business from customers who don't have a store location nearby? Maybe you don't.
Poor experience as a new customer. I signed up for their email list and was told I'd get 20% off my first purchase. Selected some items to buy online and the code didn't work. Got a message saying it couldn't be combined with other promotions. Called customer service, waited 10 minutes, and spoke to an agent who clearly didn't care. He said my items were 'branded' and the code wouldn't apply. But when I looked back at my welcome email, nothing mentioned that branded items were excluded. The agent could have offered me a different code but just didn't. He was also hard to understand. Will never shop at Penningtons again. They obviously don't care about me so why would I care about them.
I've been a loyal customer since 2018, but after several issues since the pandemic, I need to warn other shoppers. On March 11 I got an order with defective earrings that were damaged during shipping. I returned them and Penningtons got the package on March 16. A customer service rep took my info but never actually escalated my case properly. To this day my refund hasn't gone through. They keep reopening cases and saying someone will contact me, but nobody ever does. At least the earrings weren't expensive, but I'm worried for anyone who has to deal with them over a pricey item. It's really sad how much Penningtons has changed.
Absolutely terrible experience with customer service from the head office. They don't bother reading emails or actually understanding what customers are saying, just send generic responses to everyone. The Style Insider rewards program is a complete scam because you never get the certificates you're supposed to receive.
Would give five stars if not for one thing: the clothing selection has gotten really dull. They used to carry stylish pieces, and I really miss the MXM brand and all those trendy young adult options they had before. The only thing I consistently buy now is their bootcut jeans since I know my size and they fit perfectly every time. Sometimes I luck out and find a nice top, but it's rare. I love babydoll and flared tops because they flatter my body shape and make me feel fantastic. They need to expand their inventory with more fashionable, quality items in size 6X, especially bathrobes. For the past four years I've been ordering online because I know exactly what works for me in their jeans, and I always watch for sales to stock up. Their house brand jeans are excellent quality and hold up for years. I've never had to replace a pair. Other brands from way back faded quickly and got holes in the crotch area, so the quality was terrible. With their tops it's hit or miss, either too tight or too short. But ordering online is super easy.
