Rural King Reviews
Rural King receives highly polarized reviews, with roughly equal shares of enthusiastic five-star ratings and frustrated one-star complaints. Shoppers consistently praise the in-store staff for being helpful and friendly, with several mentioning exceptional service from specific employees and quick turnarounds on repairs. However, a significant portion of reviews express serious concerns about order fulfillment errors, inventory management (particularly online orders shipped incorrectly or cancelled after payment), customer service responsiveness, and inflexibility on warranty or return issues.
Recurring problems include online orders arriving with wrong items, delayed communication about inventory problems, difficulty activating credit cards, and perceived indifference from customer service when issues arise. Some reviewers also note that crowded aisles during peak seasons make shopping difficult. While in-store experiences with staff tend to be positive, the backend operations around fulfillment, customer service, and problem resolution appear to be where many customers encounter frustration.
Do people actually read anything? I see so many complaints over a single penny. The cash register counter has a clear sign about discontinuing the penny. It's not just a Rural King thing either, by the way. If you're upset about it, take it up with the government instead of making cashiers feel bad.
Ordered three stock tank heaters while they were on sale. They shipped me completely wrong items. Had to return their mistake. They waited until they got the wrong stuff back before telling me they didn't have the heaters I actually ordered. But get this, they said I could buy them on the website at a higher price now. Called their so called customer service and they basically told me too bad. No rain check, no help locating it from another location, nothing. They tried to pull a bait and switch on me.
The staff here is incredibly helpful and friendly. Gabe especially went above and beyond helping us locate items and even assisted with loading our truck when we mentioned we needed fencing materials. My only gripes are that during busy seasons the aisles get packed and it's tough to navigate a cart through. Also, the store brand food products aren't great. Their cheese curls taste bland and the strawberry rhubarb jam has barely any rhubarb flavor to it. We stick to just buying their spices now if they have the store label. Overall though, the store itself is fantastic and the prices are unbeatable.
Had a great repair experience at our local Rural King. Purchased a Stihl blower that quit working after about two months, right when we were in the middle of cleaning up leaves. Took it to the service department where Jeff handled our repair. He called within an hour saying it was done and ready to go. Super friendly guy and really quick with the work. We can't speak highly enough of him.
Got a Rural King credit card after applying when they offered it to me. No annual fee sounded good and the rewards points helped me decide. Card arrived pretty quick, within a week. Problem was when I tried to activate it, nothing worked. Called multiple times but couldn't get it activated. When I finally reached customer service, they wanted tons of personal information just to help since I don't have a cell phone. At that point I just asked them to cancel the whole thing.
This has been some of the worst customer service I've encountered. Zero satisfaction and they don't seem to care about problems. A part on my red tractor broke just past the warranty window and they refused to even discuss any options.
That Wytheville location has to be one of the worst run stores around. One manager named Arena was openly pocketing items she found and completely ignoring customers the entire time. Then there was Mark who was being hostile and cursing at the team members in the back. I'd recommend shopping anywhere but that location.
Gotta say Rural King had amazing people. Matt as my manager was fantastic, and the whole Receiving team with Brody, Kelly, Mark, Teri, and Chad was outstanding. HR person Jen and the assistant store managers Cooper, Shannon, and Cristan were incredible. Gun Barn staff Bob and Tim brought their A game every shift. My team of John, Tim, Max, Will, Delaney, Val, Nicole, Julie, and Todd were wonderful to work alongside daily. The real issue was corporate just didn't show appreciation for the work we all busted our tails to do. Everyone deserves better treatment, more pay, and more respect. A great team got let down. Family time matters, so make sure your job compensates you properly. I brought in over 115,000 dollars in merchandise sales in 10 months with zero commission. Got 60 plus people signed up for the credit card which could've meant another 100,000 in future sales, still no commission. My hourly wage was 21.25. That's 215,000 worth of value for the company but only 40,000 for me across those 10 months. Someone once asked if Rural King was a Christian outfit because of their music selection. I told them some of us work Sundays because not everyone follows one faith. Truth is I think Rural King prioritizes money over everything else.
The Martinsville store used to be one of my favorite places to visit! It's fallen apart now. We used to drive an hour to shop there and it was totally worth it. I won't be doing that anymore. The management has to be different than before.
The Martinsville location used to be my favorite shop! What happened? It's turned into a complete disaster. We'd drive an hour to get there because it was so good. Not making that trip anymore. Something must've changed with the management.
Watch out with the Cross Lanes location. They sold me a riding lawn mower claiming it was in stock ready for pickup when it absolutely was not. They took my payment through the website just fine but then cancelled the order saying they didn't have it, never offered to order one, and basically had no clue how to fix the situation. My money got held up and I still don't have a refund four days later. Worse part is they're still advertising that same mower on the website showing it in stock for pickup. This is some really shady business practice if you ask me.
The folks working at their 800 number customer service are impossible to work with. They messed up a straightforward order and cost me 220 bucks. Seven identical shirts and they couldn't get it right. If you check their reviews you'll see tons of single star ratings just like mine. Stores are closing because barely anyone wants to shop there. I'm completely done with this company and won't be back.
Ordered some game cameras online and five days later they still haven't shipped. Their customer service line isn't even open. Called the store that my order supposedly came from and they have zero information about it. Tried to save a few bucks and now I'm stuck waiting with no answers on why nothing's been sent out.
The Franklin location has a manager who doesn't seem to care one bit about his team. They engage in unfair practices when it comes to how employees are handled.
Bought a handgun here that turned out to be defective and their customer service has been terrible. Seems like nobody in the gun section even knows how to handle shipping a firearm back for warranty claims. Don't buy guns from this place, go to a real gun shop instead. My son's Christmas gift was ruined and we still can't get it fixed. I won't shop here again.
