What Shoppers Say About Benihana
Benihana receives highly polarized reviews, with the majority of shoppers rating their experience very poorly. Common complaints center on long wait times, inconsistent seating practices, lack of traditional hibachi entertainment and tableside performance, disrespectful service from staff, and poor communication around promotions. Some long-time customers report that recent visits fell significantly short of historical standards. On the positive side, a small number of reviewers praise attentive servers and acknowledge the showmanship when it does occur, though even these reviews often note operational shortcomings like ingredient availability.
The recurring issues suggest systemic problems with service consistency, host stand management, and chef performance rather than isolated incidents. Reviewers express particular disappointment when the signature hibachi entertainment element is absent, as this appears central to the Benihana experience. Service quality varies considerably by location and server, with some describing staff as dismissive of customer concerns while others commend individual employees for going above and beyond.

Sorted by: Most recentVisited for the first time at the location here. We ended up waiting for over an hour and kept getting passed over while other customers were seated. The person at the host stand seemed to be avoiding us. Since we never actually made it to our table, I can't speak to the food quality. The manager appeared more interested in chatting with staff than helping customers.
Really let down by my visit to the location here on a Friday night. I had a reservation for 6:45 and as someone who's been coming for over 25 years, this was way below what I expect from them. Eight of us sat down, including three kids under ten. What bothered me most was that the chef didn't do any of the classic hibachi entertainment. No shrimp tosses, no onion volcano, nothing. It was basically silent, boring, and just plain uncomfortable, especially for the kids who were hoping for that fun Benihana show. If I wanted basic grilled food, I could go somewhere cheaper. Part of what makes Benihana special is the experience, not just the meal. This visit completely missed that. I was disappointed for myself and everyone at my table. I've been loyal for a long time and expected better. Tried contacting them through their website two weeks ago but haven't heard anything back.
Had a terrible encounter with our server. She basically told us not to bother coming if we weren't satisfied. Is this supposed to be a restaurant or somewhere people should expect to be treated disrespectfully?
Received a promotional message about a special wagyu six course meal deal. Problem was, there was zero pricing information included in the ad. I called the restaurant to ask about cost and the staff told me a ton of people were calling with the same question. Whoever put that promotion together really dropped the ball not including any prices. They had to put me on hold while they tracked down what the actual cost was. It makes no sense that they'd send out something like that without that basic information. Other items on their website are priced, so why not this? Pretty annoyed that I had to spend my time making phone calls to figure this out. I'm sure I'm not the only one frustrated about this.
Was really looking forward to dining here based on how nice it looked online. My friend and I arrived a bit early and got seated right away at a table we'd be sharing with others. The waiter was lovely and explained everything, then took our drink order. Once everyone arrived, he took our food order and the chef came out about five minutes later. He started with some tricks and got cooking. We got onion soup that was decent and salad. Then the main course started coming out and I was shocked at the portion sizes. I counted maybe 3 small pieces of shrimp (essentially one whole shrimp), one scallop, and a tiny bit of lobster. The only thing we got a reasonable amount of was the garlic chicken rice. The salmon was absurdly thin, like nothing I've ever seen. We also ordered cocktails but there was barely any alcohol in them, they tasted like plain juice. Considering what we paid, we got way less than expected. The waiter was genuinely nice, so that wasn't the issue, but the value just wasn't there.
Our server Johnny was excellent and really personable. The cook did run short on some of the chicken and steak though.
Such a great evening! The chef was incredible and everyone on the staff treated us wonderfully.
Recently went to Benihana and had an amazing time overall, even though things started off rough. We had an 8:00pm reservation but didn't get a table until 9:15pm, which was frustrating. Once we were seated though, our server completely made up for it. She was so friendly, thoughtful, and made sure we had everything we needed. Our chef was honestly the star of the night. His cooking was perfect and he had the whole table laughing and having fun. The food was excellent and his personality made the whole experience memorable. The reservation timing could definitely be better, but the quality of service and the food made it worth the wait. If you go, definitely ask for that server and chef if you can.
Had a disappointing dinner at the location in Ohio. Food sat on the grill for over 20 minutes, which meant it was overcooked and cold by the time we got it. The chef cooked rice first with hardly any vegetables for the whole table of 8, then made each entree separately afterward. Everything ended up overcooked sitting there while waiting. When we asked about the issue, the chef was extremely rude and even refused to apologize or try to fix anything. The service was unacceptable and the food quality was below standards.
Booked a reservation for 7 adults but had to include my 8-month-old grandson in the party count even though he didn't eat or take up any space. That resulted in them charging us an 18% gratuity on eight people. They also promised us a group photo but never delivered it despite me asking several times. I also requested hot tea multiple times but never received it. The service was disappointing overall, and honestly, I don't think we'll be coming back. We were really looking forward to a special night out instead of cooking at home, but this just didn't work out.
