Marine Layer Reviews
Marine Layer has a polarized customer base with sharply divided opinions. Supporters praise the quality of clothing items, speedy shipping at no charge, and generous return windows. However, the majority of reviewers report serious concerns: inventory mismanagement (items listed as in stock that are unavailable after purchase), billing and payment processing issues (concerns about card security and data compromise), difficulty applying advertised discount codes at checkout, and quality control problems with certain items like wool products pilling after minimal wear. Several negative reviews question the company's legitimacy and operational transparency.
The 2.3 rating from 19 shoppers reflects this stark divide, with 63 percent giving one star and 32 percent giving five stars, while almost no middle-ground ratings exist. Shoppers considering Marine Layer should carefully verify inventory status before purchasing, pay close attention to discount code terms, and thoroughly review their card statements post-purchase.
I bought a bundle showing all items as in stock online, but after ordering they said part of it was actually sold out. This is misleading since the website still listed everything as available. When fixing their inventory mistake, they kept making me responsible for it. I was stuck with an incomplete bundle and had to repackage everything, print a return label, and ship it myself. That's a lot of extra hassle that shouldn't be my problem to solve. A simple full refund from the start would have been the right call.
Watch out. This is a company based in China. They won't actually deliver your purchases and your card details end up everywhere. This is why nobody really knows about them except through social media ads. Steer clear!
Great quality items with speedy, no-charge shipping and a nice long window to return things if needed.
A wool blend cardigan I bought started pilling after just the third time wearing it. Won't be ordering wool products from them again.
They compromised my credit card by routing it through ShopPay, and now my card number is all over the internet. Terrible business practices. I had to cancel my card and file a fraud alert.
This is straight-up false advertising. Their website showed socks for three pairs at thirty bucks with bright red text advertising an extra 20 percent off using a code, but then they wouldn't apply it at checkout. I got customer service to confirm they won't honor it. I was planning to spend about five hundred on socks for everyone's Christmas stockings but I'm taking my business elsewhere now. I'm also considering filing a complaint with customer protection authorities.
Ordered some white trousers and after I washed them, the waist drawstring came undone. I'm not totally sure if it was my washing machine or a manufacturing defect, but when I reached out to tell them, they gave me a full refund right away. That turned my initial disappointment into genuine admiration. This kind of hassle-free policy shows they stand behind their quality. Other companies should take notes on how to treat customers.
Be aware that ordering from this company even once will likely result in tons of unwanted catalogs flooding your mailbox, despite asking them multiple times to stop. I've tried everything including contacting the USPS, using DMA opt-out, and reaching out to the company directly six different times. My first unrequested catalog showed up on June tenth. I immediately sent them an email asking to be taken off their mailing lists. They replied the next day saying I could unsubscribe through their website and that catalogs would stop in eight to twelve weeks, promising my address would go on their do-not-mail list. I followed their instructions and figured it was handled. But then on September twenty-seventh, over fifteen weeks later, another unsolicited catalog arrived. I contacted them again about already completing their unsubscribe form and still getting materials. On September twenty-ninth, they responded with the identical message from before, acting like my first contact never happened.
Visited their Corte Madera location recently and was totally impressed. The space is gorgeous and the people working there were super nice. I grabbed several t-shirts and a couple of incredibly comfy sweatshirts for myself and my partner. Had a wonderful time shopping and I'll definitely be back. Their emails are nice too!
I joined their Re-Spun recycling program where you spend twenty dollars for a bag and get forty in store credit. I bought six bags and got six forty-dollar credits. The fine print says credits don't combine, but the whole program is set up so you end up spending extra. Each credit is below the fifty-dollar free shipping mark, so you either pay to ship or spend at least ten more per order. This needs to be clearer. They say they make zero profit, but that's misleading. The stacking limitation and shipping threshold mean they actually profit from every single redemption. Plus they've claimed this helps the environment, but by forcing separate orders, customers get multiple shipments which creates more carbon emissions, not less. I wanted others to know so they don't get trapped the same way.
Setting the clothes aside, this brand has some of the strongest customer service around. Really impressed with how they treat people!
They take down critical reviews and combine different fabric materials in single items that are basically impossible to clean properly. Also if you have any real leg size, their stretchy sweatpants are basically the only sad option.
Should have looked at these reviews sooner. It's frustrating that so many people have gone through the same terrible customer service as me. Marine Layer's phone line always goes unanswered, emails don't get helpful responses, and their Berkeley store staff is really rude. Their new Re-Spun program is deceptive. You pay about twenty-two dollars (twenty plus shipping fees) for a bag to get a forty-dollar discount. But if you're not happy with whatever you buy with that forty dollars, or it doesn't fit right, you're stuck. That credit is gone, so your money is wasted. They won't give you that credit back. The person helping me in store didn't even mention any other options before telling me my forty-dollar credit disappeared. I loved the old Re-Spun donation system but this version feels like a scam. After years of shopping with them, Marine Layer has lost my business and apparently doesn't even care.
I purchased something online and used my Re-Spun Take Back Bag credit to pay. When the item didn't fit correctly, I sent it back. They then told me there was no refund or store credit available, which meant I basically threw away my forty-dollar reward even though I wanted to buy something else. That seems really unfair considering all the clothing I donated through Re-Spun. They've lost me as a repeat customer.
