TAP Portugal Reviews
TAP Portugal receives polarized reviews, with 22 shoppers rating the airline 2.1 out of 5. The majority of negative reviews center on three main issues: a non-functional website that forces customers to call and incur additional fees, problematic handling of baggage and upgrades (including alleged double-charging when upgrading from economy to business class), and inconsistent gate procedures. Positive reviews praise the cabin crew for being friendly, professional, and attentive, with some describing their experience as exceeding expectations.
Customers note that TAP's website is described as unstable and unable to handle basic transactions, requiring workarounds through the call center. Baggage handling complaints include unexpected gate-checking of carry-on items and poor procedures for accessing luggage contents. The upgrade billing issue appears frequently, with travelers reporting that they were charged for economy amenities even after purchasing business class tickets, a practice reviewers say competitors like American and United do not follow. Those who had positive experiences emphasize the quality of in-flight service and crew professionalism.
I'd give this zero stars if I could. Aside from being cheap and gloomy no matter what class you fly, the real problem is their website is broken. Even their call center people call it 'unstable.' It won't let you do basic things online, so you have to call and pay fees you shouldn't have to pay. The call center also doesn't have access to money details, so if you cancel they can't tell you how much you'll get back. The one good thing is they bought new A330 Neo planes which are solid for long flights. But then they packed them with budget seats that have almost no room and hired crew that's either unfriendly, incompetent, or hostile. I really hope another airline buys them and improves things.
We had to check our carry-on bags at the gate because the airline supposedly overbooked the flight, even though we paid full price for carry-on. When we mentioned we had delicate ceramic items inside, they made us open our suitcases on the tarmac outside the plane to pull those items out. When we got on the plane, there turned out to be plenty of empty overhead bin space anyway.
Disappointed with how they handled my upgrade. I paid $343 to move from Economy to Business class but they didn't refund my original Economy payment for the seat and luggage, even though those are included with Business. That's essentially double-charging. Other major carriers like American and United would refund your previous purchase when you upgrade. TAP seems to prefer keeping the money and billing twice for the same amenities. I had Economy seats and luggage, then paid separately for Business seats and luggage again. This wasn't a simple upgrade where my Economy cost gets applied to my Business purchase. It was a separate bidding system. Working in travel myself, I'm definitely not going to suggest TAP Portugal to my clients.
I'm unhappy with the way this airline handled my upgrade. I spent $343 to upgrade from Economy to Business but didn't get refunded for my Economy seat and baggage that I'd already paid for. Business includes those things, so getting charged twice is wrong. Airlines like American and United would refund your first purchase when you upgrade. TAP just takes your money and charges again for the same service. I paid for Economy seats and luggage, then paid again for Business seats and luggage. It's not like they credited my Economy cost toward the upgrade either. As someone who books flights professionally, I won't be recommending this airline to my clients.
Really let down by this airline's customer service. I paid $343 to upgrade from Economy to Business class for my seat and baggage. The thing is, I'd already paid for seats and luggage in Economy, but when my upgrade was accepted I wasn't refunded that money. It's basically a scam. With American and United, when you upgrade you get your earlier payment back. TAP keeps it and charges you again for the same thing. So I paid once for Economy seats and once more for Business seats. Same with the baggage situation. This wasn't a case where they took my Economy cost and applied it toward Business. It was a totally separate bidding process. As a travel professional myself, I'm going to make sure my clients know to avoid TAP Portugal.
Flight from Lisbon to South America was one of my best flying experiences. The cabin crew was fantastic, friendly, and really professional. From the moment I boarded, I was greeted with smiles. Everything they offered went beyond what I expected, with little touches that made me feel valued. I flew economy but the crew put in extra effort to make me feel special. They deserve five stars for how hard they work. The aircraft was a modern A330 Neo with decent in-flight entertainment and pretty good food in decent portions. The crew made my whole trip better than I thought it would be. The pilots were skilled and landed so smoothly. The plane itself is nice but the entertainment system could use some upgrades with more options. For the food quality, being familiar with Portuguese cuisine, I think they could offer bigger portions and more variety like desserts and cheese options.
TAP is a terrible airline. I booked for my partner and they seated us apart on a long international route. The food was awful. Dinner was served and then literally six hours later we got a tiny snack. They wrecked my suitcase and want a report from a specialized luggage repair shop declaring it can't be fixed. How in this day and age is someone supposed to find a specialized suitcase shop?
This airline is terrible. My partner and I booked together but got put in different seats on a long international flight. The meal service was poor and we got dinner and then just a small snack six and a half hours later. They damaged my luggage and now want me to get a formal statement from a specialized suitcase repair shop saying it's beyond repair. Good luck finding a shop like that these days!
TAP Portugal has really upset me. I travel frequently with lots of airlines and this is hands down the worst I've experienced. Most airlines have minor annoyances here and there, but this is my fourth time with TAP and it's been awful every single trip. The main problem is they systematically take away passengers' carry-on baggage at the gate. You're told it's stated on your ticket, but you only see that info when you reach the boarding counter, already at the airport. When I packed my bag, I didn't know my carry-on would end up in checked baggage and come out at the carousel when I land. I had a medical device packed securely in my carry-on. They forced me to open my suitcase right at the boarding gate, right before the jet bridge, in front of lots of people, so I could move my stuff into my personal bag. It was embarrassing and stressful. They also charge $178 for a checked bag on a one-way flight, which is outrageous. Travelers use carry-on specifically to dodge these charges, but they force it checked at the gate anyway, putting it at risk of getting lost.
I'm really frustrated with TAP Portugal. I fly a lot with different airlines and this has been my worst experience by far. I've flown with them four times and every trip has been problematic. The big issue is they force you to gate-check your carry-on luggage at boarding. They say it's on your ticket but you only find out about this when you're already at the airport at the counter. When I pack my bag, I have no idea my carry-on will go down to the hold and come out on the baggage carousel. I had a medical device packed carefully in my carry-on and was forced to open my suitcase right there at the gate in front of everyone to move stuff into my personal bag. It was really stressful and embarrassing. On top of that, they charge $178 per one-way flight for a checked bag, which is crazy. People use carry-on to skip these fees but then they force it checked anyway, and you're worried about losing it with all your stuff inside.
My family flew from Lisbon to South America but their flight got rerouted to another city due to storms, which is understandable. The problem is they remained stuck inside the aircraft on the tarmac for many hours, were blocked from using wifi, and got zero food or drinks. No one explained what would happen with accommodations. Airport personnel had no information and offered zero support to anyone picking up passengers.
My family's flight from Lisbon to South America got switched to a different city because of weather, which I understand. But then they stayed locked inside the plane on the runway for hours afterward with no wifi access and nobody gave them food or snacks. They never even offered a solution for where my family would stay. The airport workers seemed confused and didn't help any of the passengers waiting to pick people up.
It's terrible that they cancelled my outbound flight to Lisbon and I lost a night at my hotel. No apology at all. Then I got seriously ill and couldn't fly, but I can't get ahold of anyone to cancel my booking. Can't cancel the tickets through their website either. This airline is just horrendous and has absolutely no customer service.
This is terrible. They cancelled my flight to Lisbon and I lost money on my hotel reservation with no apology. Then I got a serious health issue and couldn't travel, but there's no way to reach anyone to cancel my tickets. The website won't let you cancel either. This company is just awful with zero customer support.
