Midwest Boots is rated 1.7 out of 5 by 18 shoppers, with a highly polarized customer response. The small percentage of five-star reviewers praise the quality of Thorogood brand boots themselves, with one experienced truck driver calling them superior to major competitors. However, the overwhelming majority of reviews express serious frustration with the company's return and refund policies, customer service responsiveness, and handling of fit issues and defective products.

Recurring complaints center on Midwest Boots' reluctance to process returns and refunds, even for legitimate reasons such as poor fit or manufacturing defects. Multiple shoppers report that the company denied returns based on minor wear marks or dirt, refused to cover return shipping costs for defective items, and dragged out refund processes. Several reviewers also note that items were shipped without tags or with tags removed, complicating the return process further. Dissatisfied customers consistently advise others to avoid ordering from this retailer due to the difficulty and stress involved in handling fit problems or damaged merchandise.

These boots didn't fit properly. After wearing them for less than a day, I asked for a refund but Midwest claimed that a tiny spot of dirt meant the boots were damaged. Their refusal to help was completely unreasonable.

As a truck driver for 40 years who spends most of my time out of the cab, I've tried every major brand of American-made work boots. Thorogood boots beat out the competition in every single way. Five stars, no question.

The ordering and shipping process went fine, but the boots didn't fit right so I'm returning them. Their return process and policy are really frustrating. If you happen to get the perfect fit first try, great. If not, prepare yourself for a headache. I'm done doing business with this company.

First time ordering from this place and the boots were too tight to even get on. I sent them back and they refused the return claiming the boots had wear marks. You can't wear something that doesn't fit right. On top of that, they removed the tags before sending them back. One of the owners showed zero regard for customer satisfaction. Stay away from this company.

Received a new pair of boots and found they broke when I tried to lace them up. When I requested an exchange or repair, they told me I'd have to pay shipping to send in the defective boots. You shouldn't have to pay extra to return something broken that you already paid to have delivered. Customer service was awful and I won't shop there again.

The Thorogood boots themselves are solid, but watch out for Midwest Boots and their customer service. If you order the wrong size or need to return something, getting your refund back can turn into a frustrating process. Shopping online with them can be a nightmare, especially when they're quick to take your money but drag their feet when it comes time to handle returns or give you your money back.

I wish I'd checked reviews before buying from Midwest Boots. Bought a pair of work boots for my son as a Christmas gift. We live on a farm so he'd wear them hard every single day. Within six months, the interior lining completely fell apart. I contacted Midwest and they said to send them back since they had a one year warranty. We shipped them back and got them returned with a note saying they had excessive use. Excessive use? Because he wore them daily on a working farm? This company doesn't stand behind their products. These boots are only good if you're not actually doing any real work in them. I've never encountered a company that wouldn't honor their own warranty. I work in manufacturing and we replace high end equipment no matter what because we value customers and want their business in the future. I'm done with them. Twisted X boots lasted twice as long. I'm going with a different brand that actually honors what they promise. Don't buy from any company that won't back up their warranty.

I wanted to return boots that had a factory defect but they told me it was a sizing issue. When I called them directly, I got a rude representative who refused to help. I eventually reached out to Thorogood directly and they got me a replacement. But the third party handling the replacement messed that up and shipped them to my old address. When I tried to contact them about it, they weren't responsive. I only have the boots now because my friend still works at my former location. Go with Red Wing instead, or just save yourself the headache and buy something cheap at a discount store. Also, their review site is sketchy and they won't let you post negative feedback.

I returned boots because the sole started peeling off after just one week of wear. They refused the return and called it normal wear and tear. I don't understand how a steel toe boot gets that kind of damage in a week, but apparently they know my feet better than I do.

Nathan W.Aug 31, 2023

I'd rate this zero if I could. Dropped 400 bucks on boots and paid an extra 50 for next day delivery on a Monday for a job interview. Next day somehow turned into a week. Most of their inventory is cheap Chinese-made boots, and when you do order the pricier American-made options, they can't even get shipping right. Even after paying 50 dollars for 24-hour delivery, it took four days. They gave me tracking numbers that didn't work and refused to do anything about it. When I tried contacting their shipper, the tracking information was wrong. This company treats customers like garbage no matter how much money you spend. They push all the blame onto you and UPS and act like they couldn't care less. Honestly stay far away. They have zero interest in providing decent service to anyone. Expect dishonesty, expect to get hung up on, expect terrible treatment all around.

Anthony L.Aug 30, 2023

This store has a no-return policy, so watch out. You're better off going to a physical store or ordering through Amazon instead. If you buy from here and the boots don't fit right or feel uncomfortable, you're stuck with them.

Sarah C.Aug 15, 2023

I wouldn't have ordered these if I'd known returning them would cost me 30 bucks. It took a week just to get them, and they arrived with some scratches on them. I figured they'd get roughed up at work anyway so I didn't mind at first. But after only 20 minutes of wearing them around the house, I realized they weren't for me. At 265 dollars, they felt cheaply made. I sent photos and they asked me to send them back, but a week later they showed up at my door saying they weren't returnable. That's ridiculous. After tons of back and forth emails, I finally spoke to a manager who claimed the insurance team said the soles were worn, which wasn't even true. They didn't even mention the existing scuffs. How can an insurance team sell boots that already have damage on them? That defeats the purpose of having insurance. This was the worst experience I've had with any company. Stay away from ordering from them online. And 30 dollars to return boots is absolutely ridiculous.

Got a pair of Thorogood boots about five months ago and they've already split at the seams. My previous pair lasted over four years, which is why I bought the same brand again. Now Midwest Boots is saying that since it's been more than a week, I'm responsible for shipping costs. They might try to fix them, and if that doesn't work they might send a replacement, but it could take three to six weeks. These are my work boots for emergency services and I can't be without them for that long.

Daniel T.Mar 22, 2023

Their return policy is misleading. I spent over 40 dollars to ship back boots that were killing my feet. After that, they stopped responding to my messages and calls. It took forever to find out they wouldn't do anything for me because I'd worn them for a few hours. Biggest ripoff in the entire boot industry.

Patrick G.Feb 6, 2023

Paid over 250 dollars for boots that gave my wife painful blisters after wearing them for only 15 minutes. When we asked to exchange them for a bigger size, we were told we were out of luck. There's just a tiny mark on the sole of one boot, but apparently that makes them non-exchangeable. I had to call five different times because I kept getting told I needed to talk to a specific person, but that person was never available. When I finally got through, they just said they weren't exchangeable without explaining anything. Felt like a total waste of both time and money.
