About MoneyGram

With a history spanning over 80 years, MoneyGram has evolved from its humble beginnings as a provider of money orders to become a modern fintech company. Its core mission is to move money across borders seamlessly, affordably, and securely for everyone.

Operating in over 200 countries and territories, MoneyGram has one of the world's most extensive networks, which includes over 400,000 retail locations and a powerful digital platform, providing a reliable way to send money home to loved ones.

How MoneyGram Works

MoneyGram's process is designed to be quick and straightforward for both the sender and the receiver. The steps can vary slightly depending on whether you send online or in person.

For the Sender

  1. Go to the MoneyGram website or app and log in, or visit an agent location.
  2. Provide the recipient's full legal name, their location, and the amount you want to send.
  3. Select how the recipient will get the money (e.g., cash pickup, direct to a bank account, or mobile wallet).
  4. Pay for the transaction using a bank account, debit card, credit card, or cash (if at a location).
  5. Once the transaction is complete, you will receive an eight-digit reference number. Share this number with the recipient.

For the Recipient

Cash Pickup: The recipient must go to a MoneyGram agent location with a valid photo ID and the transaction's reference number. The name on the ID must exactly match the details provided by the sender.

Bank Account/Mobile Wallet: No action is needed. The funds are sent directly to the account, and the recipient will be notified once the transfer is complete.

Understanding MoneyGram Fees and Exchange Rates

The final cost of your money transfer depends on a number of factors. Understanding these can help you choose the most cost-effective option:

  • Payment Method: Fees can vary depending on how you pay for the transfer. Paying with a bank account is generally cheaper, while using a debit or credit card may incur higher fees.
  • Receiving Method: The way your recipient receives the money also affects the cost. Fees for transfers sent to a bank account or mobile wallet are often lower than those for cash pickup.
  • Exchange Rates: MoneyGram makes a profit from the foreign currency spread, which is the difference between the exchange rate it offers and the mid-market rate. This is where a significant portion of the cost of a transfer lies, and it can fluctuate daily.

You can easily get a no-obligation quote and compare different payment and receiving methods on MoneyGram's website or app to find the best rate and lowest fee for your specific transfer.

FAQs

1. How do I track a MoneyGram transfer?

To track your transfer, you will need the eight-digit transaction reference number found on your receipt or confirmation email. You can enter this number on MoneyGram's website or app to view the real-time status of your transfer.

2. What are the transfer limits?

For security purposes, MoneyGram imposes limits on the amount of money you can send. These limits vary based on factors such as your payment method, the destination country, and how often you send money. You can check the specific limits for your transfer by starting the process on their app or website.

3. What do I need to send money with MoneyGram?

To send a transfer, you typically need a valid government-issued photo ID, the recipient's full legal name, and their current location.

4. Can I schedule a recurring send to send money transfers on a weekly or monthly basis?

You cannot schedule recurring transfers, but MoneyGram offers the "Send Again" feature, which makes it easy to send money to the same recipients repeatedly. Simply go to your account history, select a past transfer, and click "Send Again."

DON'T USE A USELESS COMPANY

Sent money to our daughter in Scotland for Christmas for our grandchildren (2025) when she went to post office to collect they no longer do moneygram. Okay do she went to Paisley, this being on the website, to collect the funds. Once she got there they don't give funds out. So the next place to go was to Govan an again they didn't want to give out the funds so then she is now having to go to Glasgow. Mind you she is running around to get the money I sent with 2 young childern one being under a year. I will never use moneygram again absolutely disgusting, if there agents in a moneygram office can't give out the funds that i sent they should close the heck down . Bad business practices will ruin a company an at this point they need to be closed, they have severe breaches more than once an can't make things right they run young mothers all over to pick up funds. DONT USE THIS COMPANY ! It may cost more to use western union or other means of transfer but at least the person will get what you have sent.

🚫 MoneyGram: Convenience masking a scam

I am furious with MoneyGram. Every time I try to send money from the US to India, they shut down my account for “security reasons.” Calling support is useless — endless holds and disconnects. Chatting with a real person is a nightmare, and when I finally get through, I’m forced to reset my password, upload ID, take multiple selfies, and resubmit everything. This has happened four times with the same sender and receiver. It’s absurd. Their excuse is “protection from scammers,” but in reality, MoneyGram feels like the scam — wasting time and offering worse exchange rates than competitors.MoneyGram thrives on its huge store network and convenient locations, which lure in unsuspecting customers who think they’re choosing a trusted brand. In reality, they’re being ripped off with poor service, inflated rates, and endless account issues.I finally switched to Remitly. The transfer was instant, hassle-free, and I saved around $100 thanks to better rates.Stay away from MoneyGram. They are unreliable, overpriced, and a complete waste of time.

bad service

I am very disappointed that your service in central Damascus is letting our relatives and friends waste so much time and energy, standing for hours just to receive the support we send. This is completely unacceptable. I will not send money again nor recommend your service until this issue is properly resolved

OMG really impressed

OMG really impressed. I used moneygram for the first time today, I have never really had the need to send money before but today was an emergency. I cannot believe how quick & easy the whole process was, the exchange rate was very competitive too. Money was received at the other end in seconds. I was really nervous but honestly I am really impressed. Thank you Moneygram.Highly recommend

Beware trying to use MoneyGram online ...

I recently needed to make a payment to a company that provided a company code that would bring them up under paybills at MoneyGram. Immediately prior to going to the MoneyGram site I was on the phone with my bank to activate my new card. I followed the instructions given to use MoneyGram.com to make this one time transaction. I created a profile, entered the 4 digit code, the business came up. I went forward entering my financial information. For some reason unknown to me the process stalled so I phoned the business I needed to receive the money. With them on the line with me, we attempted to complete the transaction. When they could see that I had been using the process correctly but transaction was not completing, they suggested we give up and try with Western Union. The company stayed on the phone with me as I headed over to the other money wire business. The problem and reason for this review is that I began receiving Fraud Alerts from my bank. Did I recognize this transaction? Followed immediately by a 2nd Fraud Alert, did I recognize this transaction? No I did not. I only just activated the debit card moments before going to the MoneyGram site! I had to pause my attempts to make a money transfer. I needed to call my bank. By then a 3rd transaction was trying to go through on my card. My card had to be shut down and a new card ordered. I would be without a card for the next week. Which brings me to the 2nd reason for this review. I contacted MoneyGram so they could do whatever companies do about such activities experienced by customers. Only to be passed around to different departments and hung up on twice. lt is their complete lack of concern over what happened to my brand newly activated card while attempting to use their pay bills option that I object to. Had my bank not been notifying me in real time, my acct could and I dare say would have been wiped out bcuz I attempted to use MoneyGram online.

I sent money 8 days ago

I sent money 8 days ago. The transfer bounced on day 2, and the exchange initiated a second transfer without contacting me.I only found out when I followed up. Now, on day 8, the second transfer still hasn't arrived. Despite providing evidence from my bank showing no transaction from Unimoni DFC BRANCH in that same week, they are asking me to wait 7-10 more days for an investigation, even though I informed them that I'll be out of the country on my initial transaction, I am frustrated by their lack of communication, unilateral actions, and failure to resolve the issue. PATHETIC

First and last time. Leave well alone.

I used Moneygram for the first time following a recommendation and I wish I hadn't. I set the new account up which was fast. On transferring a relatively small amount direct from a UK bank they immediately asked everything except the individuals DNA sample. Within 2 minutes Moneygram advised my profile had been disabled. No reason just for security purposes!! In the meantime time despite disabling my account my bank notified money transfered and debited payable to Moneygram gram. I had to speak to Moneygram chat advisor to see what was going on. Helpfully they told me it was disabled!! I knew that? I asked where is my money? After being left hanging in silence they said it can be collected? I asked is account still disabled and why? They said yes for security reasons but to email if I wanted them to reveiw it????!!! I emailed offering to provide Government ID and supporting documentation to enable only to be told Moneygram already explained and use another service???Umm no. Im using no other service except my bank. Leave this service well alone. Your money will get lost among the blind leading the blind. Pay the extra with your bank. It may take longer but at least they wont give you the run around. My first and last experience with them. Never again.
