What Shoppers Say About LA Fitness
LA Fitness receives highly polarized reviews, with shoppers either very satisfied or deeply dissatisfied. Those who praise the gym highlight the spacious facility, quality equipment, and friendly staff. However, a substantial portion of reviewers report serious concerns including poor pool and whirlpool maintenance (with frequent closures), confusing and inconsistent pricing quotes, difficult membership cancellation processes, and questionable business practices such as refusing promised refunds.
Common complaints extend beyond facility issues to customer service problems. Shoppers report inconsistent sales staff knowledge, unhelpful corporate responses that vary by location, and negative interactions with management. Several reviewers describe the cancellation experience as deliberately difficult, with one stating it qualifies as a "nightmare." The stark division in ratings suggests that member experience varies significantly by location or membership circumstance.

Sorted by: Most recentThe facility itself is nice, spacious, and has great equipment, and the staff is friendly and helpful. But if you're planning to use the pool or whirlpool, be prepared to be disappointed. They clearly don't invest in maintaining these amenities, and they're shut down half the time. I joined when this place first opened because I wanted a gym with a pool for swimming. If another gym opened up nearby, I'd switch in a heartbeat. The pool has been closed multiple times recently for weeks at a time. They just don't put any real effort or money into keeping the pool and whirlpool operational. If swimming is important to your fitness routine, go somewhere else because you'll just end up frustrated.
Don't bother joining unless you're ready for a nightmare getting out. Canceling is nearly impossible. Just stay away.
Terrible experience overall. When I tried to get pricing for my girlfriend's membership, I received three completely different quotes. The general manager then blamed the new sales rep for not knowing the rates. The company clearly doesn't train staff properly. I contacted corporate and got a special rate, but was told it only applied to California locations. Then when I called back about the original quote, the rep claimed he'd been mistaken too. Nobody seems to know what they're doing, and the lack of professionalism and basic customer service is astounding.
I called the gym to ask about membership rates and was told paying upfront for the whole year would actually cost me a hundred bucks more than doing monthly payments. That makes zero sense and definitely isn't the way to attract new members. Based on that nonsense, I'm not joining. These overcrowded gyms aren't worth the dishonest sales tactics.
This gym has some seriously shady business practices. They promised to refund my annual membership fee since I only needed short-term access, then backed out. My free training session started over thirty minutes late, and when I asked them to reschedule, they said they'd call but never did. When I needed to cancel due to a move, they refused because the manager was away for two weeks. It's frustrating dealing with a company that doesn't follow through on what they promise.
Been a member for years, but the management at this location is a serious problem. The manager approached my friend and me very aggressively while we were working out, touched my friend without permission, and loudly told us we couldn't be training together. We weren't bothering anyone and I have my own membership. This kind of disrespect and public humiliation is completely unacceptable and unprofessional. Members deserve to be treated with respect. I won't recommend this gym until management learns how to handle situations appropriately.
The recent renovation looks great, but the gym's lack of attention to member concerns is frustrating. For months before the remodel, the yoga room lights were stuck on at full brightness and couldn't be dimmed or turned off, which anyone who does yoga knows ruins the experience. Despite multiple complaints, management refuses to fix it and tells employees there's no budget for repairs. Yet somehow they're spending thousands to refinish the wood floor. When complaints are submitted online, the response is always that it's been sent to the facility manager with no actual follow-up. The gym only seems to care about getting new members signed up and collecting monthly fees, not about keeping current members happy.
LA Fitness is all about making money. Customer loyalty and satisfaction don't seem to matter much to them. They're too focused on competing with other big chains. The staff can be pretty rude too.
I've been loyal to this gym for years and even brought three family members on board. The facilities are great, but my recent visit to the location here left me seriously disappointed and questioning my membership. I was trying to enroll my son, who has some special fitness needs, and had a really negative interaction with the personal training manager. His condescending tone and lack of respect made me feel unwelcome despite being a long-time member. I decided not to bring my son because no one should feel treated that way, especially someone with different needs. The gym has plenty of excellent trainers who actually value their members, and everyone deserves that same welcoming and supportive experience.
