What Shoppers Say About Troy-Bilt
Troy-Bilt products receive overwhelmingly negative feedback from shoppers, with 1.3 out of 5 based on 15 reviews. Customers report widespread quality control issues across multiple product categories, including walk-behind mowers, riding mowers, snowthrowers, tillers, and leaf blowers. Common complaints include premature equipment failure (often within the first season or shortly after purchase), defective parts arriving with new units, and poor durability considering the premium prices charged. Many reviewers express disappointment that the Troy-Bilt brand, once considered reliable, has declined significantly under current management.
Customer service experiences compound the frustration. Shoppers report difficulty reaching helpful support representatives, unhelpful responses to warranty claims, and suggestions to purchase replacement parts rather than address manufacturing defects. Local service shops often refuse to work on Troy-Bilt equipment, leaving customers with limited repair options. Several reviewers report being stuck with defective units after going through return processes multiple times, suggesting systemic quality problems rather than isolated incidents.

Sorted by: Most recentGot a new walk behind model TB310B with an incorrect bagging system included. Called Troy-bilt customer service three separate times. I even sent photos of my receipt showing the purchase was just six days old and pictures of the wrong parts. The third representative told me those pieces are available for purchase, then suggested I go back to the store to verify it was the wrong part, but said there wasn't anything they could do to help. I won't be buying from this company again.
I own a Troy Bilt vortex 2890 snowthrower and I'm not happy about it. This was the priciest snowthrower I've ever bought and also the worst. Right from the first snow, it was completely unreliable. The customer service made it even worse. I spent an hour trying to find someone who could actually help, eventually getting a nice fellow who obviously knew nothing about the equipment. If you're looking for an expensive decoration or something to weigh down your equipment shed, get this machine. Otherwise, I'd pass on it.
Purchased a Troy built backpack leaf blower roughly three years back after reading positive reviews. It quit working, so I took it to a local shop that carries their products. The technician called a week later to say it was beyond repair. He mentioned this was unusual since they typically work five to seven years. My son did his own research and ordered a replacement. I opened it on December 27th, read through the manual, and it performed beautifully on the first tank. Halfway through the second tank, it started sputtering and then shut down completely. I couldn't get it running again, so I finished my leaves with my electric blower instead. My son is returning this one. I have until next fall to decide what brand to buy next.
What used to be a trusted name has been ruined by new management. They slap the brand name on cheap, unreliable machines and charge premium prices for them. My riding mower is a nightmare. I spend way more hours fixing it than actually mowing. We've gone through the return process twice already and just accepted the third defective unit. It won't hold a charge and needs a jump start every single time I want to use it. When it quits mid-yard, which happens constantly, I'm hoping it'll fire back up on its own, but that rarely happens. I've rigged up a permanent jumper cable under the seat to deal with it. The machine struggles on slight inclines and the brakes slip going downhill. I'm genuinely concerned about safety issues here.
Ran the backpack blower through one season on my property and it quit before the leaves even started falling the next year. Checked with service shops in my area but none would work on it. Contacted the manufacturer for help and got nowhere. Had to drive out to talk to someone who told me the damage wasn't covered under warranty. Don't bother with Troy built products. They're worthless.
Bought a Troy-bilt walk behind tiller from their website two years ago. Used it once and immediately noticed one wheel was leaking gear oil from a faulty seal. The same issue had happened with an older tiller I owned before. I looked up repair videos but decided it was too complicated to fix myself. When I called Troy-bilt support, the rep had trouble understanding English. I gave him the model and serial number, but he couldn't locate anything in their system. These machines just aren't worth what they cost. If this had only happened once, I could let it slide, but having the same problem twice tells me they make poor quality equipment.
This edger gave me nothing but problems from day one. The starter rope snapped from constant use. Since I'd already replaced the carburetor last year and finally had it running decently, I needed a new rope. Ordered the replacement online and entered the worst customer experience imaginable. Never got shipping details, only order confirmation. Checked the website tracking and got error messages. After waiting three weeks, I called and was told it would arrive that same day. It didn't. Called back two days later and got the exact same promise. False again. Week four, I placed another order with assurance that shipping info would follow. Nothing happened. After seven weeks, I checked the status online and got another error. Called again and was promised delivery that day. I asked them to email me the tracking number. The tracking showed "out for delivery" on June 14th then jumped to today, July 28th, claiming arrival today. Clearly their system is broken. No information appears between those dates even though I placed a second order. Called customer service yet again and they said they can't speed up shipping after eight weeks, no matter what. I requested the diameter of the starter rope but never got an answer.
Managed to find a really nice lawn mower that actually works well for my needs.
Tried ordering a part over the phone and they billed my card twice. They claimed my first payment didn't go through, so I used another card, but both charges went through. No confirmation email arrived. I had to call back several times to even confirm the order was placed because they said they'd lost my order number. Getting through their automated menu to reach someone is painful, and that person couldn't handle putting in the order correctly or sending confirmation. I'm out over $300 and have no idea if I'll ever get the part or my refund.
Keep getting fraudulent charges on my card from people using stolen numbers to buy from this site. This has happened three times over the past couple years and it's getting frustrating. I only noticed this particular charge because it was unusual for me. I'm pretty sure I know which company is responsible. This is exactly why I keep my credit limit set low. The products themselves don't even get great reviews anyway.
