Fairmont Hotels and Resorts Reviews
Fairmont Hotels and Resorts divides shoppers sharply: 41 percent give five stars, praising exceptional service, thoughtful details, natural beauty, and staff compassion during difficult moments. These enthusiastic guests highlight memorable experiences, quality amenities like good coffee, and staff who go above and beyond. However, 53 percent rate the property one or two stars, citing persistent operational issues including pest infestations (mosquitoes), poor water pressure in showers, slow room service with long waits, lack of communication from management about property rules, and cleanliness concerns such as stained pillows. Some guests note that service quality varies significantly between properties and that the premium pricing does not consistently deliver luxury-level experiences.
Common complaints focus on inconsistent service standards, maintenance issues, and communication failures that seem at odds with Fairmont's positioning as a high-end hotel brand. While staff kindness and attention to detail earn praise from satisfied guests, the recurring problems with basic amenities (water pressure, pest control, housekeeping), food service timing, and front desk communication suggest operational gaps. Guests paying premium rates expect reliability alongside luxury, and the mixed reviews indicate that experience varies considerably depending on location and circumstances.
I booked a stay at a Fairmont property to celebrate my wedding anniversary, and I have to say the experience was absolutely unacceptable for a hotel of this caliber. During the day we dealt with annoying delays getting room service and dusty air in the room, but things got much worse once night fell. Our room was infested with mosquitoes that kept us awake all night with their constant buzzing. My family and I were bitten repeatedly and woke up the next morning with blood spots all over the sheets from the bites. Nobody in our group got any sleep, and we were all itching and uncomfortable. When I complained to the front desk staff, they offered a late checkout and said they'd look into it, claiming they found nothing. But when I went back to the room myself to show them the problem, I discovered silverfish near the bed and piles of dust and hair under the blankets that showed the room hadn't been properly cleaned in a long time. This isn't just a small problem. This is a major failure in basic cleanliness and pest management. It's really troubling that a luxury property charging premium rates would allow conditions like this.
I'm quite upset about my stay at the Playa del Carmen location. The front desk and management didn't communicate anything to us. We were staying a short distance away from the main area, and apparently there were rules we had no idea about. We went outside three different times that day and nobody said anything to us except to confirm our name and room number. Later that evening, one of the staff members suddenly asked for our ID but we'd never been informed of this requirement before that. We had to wait outside for twenty minutes. The reception desk and manager didn't seem concerned at all. The whole situation felt disorganized.
My husband and I just experienced something truly special at the Riviera Maya property. It's honestly the best time I've had at any hotel in the past decade. The natural beauty, the service quality, the thoughtfulness in every detail, the food, and the partnership with a luxury beauty brand all came together to create memories we'll never forget. I would absolutely come back and tell everyone I know how amazing it is. My best friend stayed here with her wife and she feels exactly the same way. It's a really magical destination.
I paid eight hundred pounds for two nights and ran into several issues. The shower barely had any water pressure. Breakfast was decent on the first morning, but the second morning they made me wait ten minutes for a pot of tea and I'd already finished eating by the time it arrived. I had to ask twice for the tea. I'd arranged to pay in installments since I couldn't pay the full amount upfront, but when I asked if I could do that again for another booking, they said no. The management seems to change their minds about policies constantly. It's unfortunate because they might be turning away business, or maybe they just don't see me as a valued customer.
I stayed at a landmark Toronto hotel for a four day conference and expected top tier service. The location was perfect and the coffee in the room was fantastic, but I ran into several problems with how things were handled. When I got to my room, there was a pillow with dark stains on it that looked like footprints. I reported it and they switched out the bedding, but nobody apologized or explained what happened. Another time I came back at 2 PM for a private meeting and the room still hadn't been cleaned even though I'd requested it earlier. I had to hunt down housekeeping myself. On my checkout day, someone knocked on my door at noon even though the do not disturb sign was on it, asking if I was leaving. The valet service cost $75 a day for a total of $225 over my stay, there was no car wash included, and somehow about $8 in loose change I'd left in the vehicle disappeared. The positives were definitely the location and that great coffee. Overall though, this didn't feel like the quality I'd expect. The hotel needs to work on consistency, communication, and how they treat guests. A bidet in the room would be nice too. I won't be booking here again unless things improve.
We went through a sudden family tragedy while staying at this Monte Carlo property, and I cannot say enough about how incredible they were to us. The entire team showed us such compassion and understanding during such a difficult time. We're extremely grateful. One staff member in particular went above and beyond to help us handle everything smoothly and efficiently.
We were really excited to try the Sunday brunch and ended up leaving disappointed. The food was actually excellent, so I can't fault that. The issue was definitely with the service. We sat down at 1:30 and ordered a cocktail and a sprite. It took twenty minutes just to get the sprite. Then we waited over an hour for the cocktail, and when I asked a server about it three separate times, he seemed annoyed that I was asking. We ended up ordering two drinks per person because the service was so slow. They brought us the wrong entree twice. I noticed the same server walking around seemingly lost, holding people's plates but clearly unsure who they were for. When we finished eating, we tried to find someone to pay but nobody was managing the dining floor. We went upstairs to the desk, then back down, asking who to pay. Finally someone came over and had to ask us what table we were sitting at, and we had to point it out to him.
My stay at this Istanbul property was wonderful. It was exactly what I needed to recover and unwind after a medical procedure. The executive lounge exceeded expectations, and I want to especially thank one of the staff members for being so warm and hospitable during our time there. We'll definitely be back.
I'd think twice about working at the Edmonton location unless you're okay with being worked into the ground. The staff is stretched incredibly thin all the time, and management thinks a pizza party somehow makes up for how hard these people are pushed. The whole building has a terrible smell that seems like sewage, and the air quality is so bad it makes employees downstairs actually get sick. Leadership never changes anything, employees are frustrated and burnt out, which makes them dismissive with guests. This is not somewhere I'd recommend staying. It's definitely not worth your money and it's a miserable place to work. The smell alone is a deal breaker.
I had a rough experience at the San Juan location. After a grueling 36 hour flight and having my luggage go missing, my room wasn't ready until 4:30 PM even though I checked in at 2:30. The room they gave me was cramped with a view of the hallway and a bathroom that was way too small. Since it was my birthday trip and I had booked six nights, I asked to switch to a different room. They said they'd try to move me and we waited three days, but nothing happened. That's really all it took for me to feel like they didn't care about taking care of guests.
For the high nightly rate you're paying, I'd expect better overall. The pre-authorization charge from check-in didn't actually post until a full month later, and I had to make multiple calls and send emails before it went through. The lounge seating by the pool area felt cramped with too many guests. The room decor looked tired and dated. On the positive side, the location is excellent and breakfast was really good. The restaurant staff was attentive and friendly.
My kids gave us a four hundred dollar gift certificate to celebrate our 40th anniversary. We've always loved staying at this particular hotel chain, so my wife got us a reservation. The front desk promised her they'd figure out how to apply the certificate when we arrived. The location and building were absolutely stunning, but unfortunately the management and staff were really disappointing. The parking area is cracked and needs new asphalt, the dining room had just as many bugs as customers, and I won't even get into how the staff treated us. When we left, the manager at the desk told my wife the gift certificate couldn't be used. She felt deceived and let down by the whole situation. Things got worse when she noticed they'd already charged her card in full weeks before we actually stayed there. The whole experience fell way short of what we were hoping for from a property like this.
We had a wonderful dinner at the restaurant with views out across the water. The scenery was absolutely beautiful and our server was friendly and attentive the whole time.
Really enjoyed our time here. The housekeeping staff was phenomenal. Special thanks to Piyali, Kaberi, and Nabin for doing such a great job. They really know how to take care of guests.
