If you're not a plant expert you probably won't catch this until too late. Completely unacceptable. Try contacting them and suddenly they "can't find your order" - though honestly does it matter at that point? The single replacement I managed to squeeze out of them was also the wrong species and guess what, also invasive.
Got an American Beautyberry bush a couple years back. Finally seeing real growth this year, but it's not the native variety I ordered - turned out to be a non-native cultivar that spreads like crazy. Completely wrong for what I needed. When I reached out to Arbor Day, they just sent me a generic form letter about invasive species without actually addressing that I received the wrong plant. Most frustrating part was posting a review about my experience, only to have it disappear from their site. Looks like they cherry-pick which reviews show up. Would be great if they actually verified the plants they're sending match what customers are paying for.
Ten years ago we ordered three lace bark elm trees. Not knowing any better at the time, we actually received regular elm trees instead. Now that they're full grown I'm constantly battling Japanese beetles and various diseases that keep trying to kill them and I'm losing ground. Seems like Arbor Day should be able to tell the difference between species.
Major waste of money here. This outfit ships dead sticks to customers, and when you follow their replacement policy they just send you more dead sticks. Save yourself the trouble and headache by going to an actual local nursery instead. Don't bother with this company.
It's been nearly a year and I'm still waiting. Called them countless times and every single time they give me a new delivery estimate that comes and goes without the order arriving. They mentioned a warehouse fire caused delays, but basic customer service would involve either refunding my money or sending different trees. I've had better luck with them before, but this time has been frustrating. I understand you get saplings not full-sized trees, but the timeline is ridiculous.
Absolutely avoid ordering from these folks or donating for their free tree offers. My spouse donated expecting 10 complimentary trees. Spring planting is best, so naturally we didn't get them until late May when temperatures were brutal. The trees showed up as basically bare sticks and most are now dying or dead. We also purchased a bush and were promised a free Red Maple, which arrived completely dead - also a stick. Called customer service after a 15-minute wait and got told they only cover purchased items, not the free tree. Never mind that we'd already cleared ground, put up protective fencing, and invested serious time planting. They refused to replace it. Also discovered they sold our contact details to every marketing firm out there and now our mailbox is packed with junk from random organizations. Told them to get us off third-party lists immediately. Absolutely furious. Stay far away from this organization.
Ordered trees in summer 2022 expecting fall delivery. Didn't get my shipment of 250 seedlings until December. Planted them in a rush and naturally they all died when a hard freeze hit shortly after. Reached out to Arbor Day and got a letter offering either a refund or replacement trees in spring. Spring's almost done now and no replacement trees have arrived, plus zero follow-up communication. Asked again about a refund and still nothing.
