What Shoppers Say About Citi Bike
Citi Bike is rated 1.1 out of 5 by 16 shoppers, with the overwhelming majority expressing serious dissatisfaction. Reviewers consistently praise the concept of the service and the extensive network of pickup and dropoff locations throughout the city, which makes bike access convenient in theory. However, nearly every review focuses on operational failures and service deterioration, particularly since Lyft's involvement. Shoppers report unreliable bike availability (stations frequently empty or overfull), nonfunctional equipment, heavy electric bikes that don't meet all rider needs, and bikes that fail to dock properly even after multiple attempts at different stations.
Beyond reliability issues, reviewers cite multiple pricing frustrations: unexpected charges for e-bikes that weren't clearly advertised upfront, confusing day pass structures that don't work as expected, per-ride costs of $4.79 that exceed public transit alternatives, and auto-renewal policies with steep $45 early cancellation fees. Subscribers also note the absence of senior or military discounts despite promises of veteran benefits. The combination of degraded service quality, confusing pricing, and poor customer experience has prompted multiple long-term members to abandon their memberships entirely.

Sorted by: Most recentI'm letting my membership go after being a customer for years. Used to love the service before Lyft got involved. As an older rider, I appreciated having regular bikes available for my fitness routine, but now everything's heavy electric models and many don't work at all. This past year has been nothing but frustration, which is why I'm done. Bring back simple bikes and discounts for older adults.
They lock you in for a minimum of 3 months and will auto-charge after that period ends. Want to cancel early? That'll be another $45. Plus the bikes themselves are pretty beat up.
This service just isn't dependable. The concept is solid, but the reality is a mess. Good thing I don't count on it for work since I can't trust it. I've shown up to find no working bikes available or stations completely full. Sure, it comes through maybe 70 percent of the time, but that's not enough to rely on when being punctual matters. The regular pedal bikes especially are pretty useless. I'm not alone either - my friends who use this service complain about the exact same issues. It's a shame because biking around this city is usually fantastic, but not when the system doesn't work.
We brought our daughter to New York for the first time and wanted to bike around as a way to see the sights. E-bikes came with surprise charges that weren't really advertised well. After riding through Central Park, our bike wouldn't dock properly. We tried over 30 different docks at two separate stations and just got stuck there. Random helpful people and even an e-bike technician tried assisting. We ended up spending 2 hours on the phone that day, another hour the next morning, and 2 more hours the day after that dealing with this mess and the charges. It really ruined what should have been a great trip.
I'm ending my subscription for several reasons. First, prices keep climbing even though e-bikes now cost extra. They're asking me to pay way more for an electric bike ride than a subway ticket costs. Second, there's no discount for seniors or military members. We were told a vet discount was coming, then the next year they said it was discontinued, even though it was still on the website. That was insulting. Third, good luck reaching them. When you do get someone, they're completely clueless. Last thing - when I tried canceling, they gave me only 100 characters to explain why, which says everything about how they value customer feedback. And that's not even addressing the condition of the equipment and stations.
The good stuff: tons of pickup and dropoff spots everywhere, and the bikes were actually in decent shape. Riding around the city was enjoyable. But here's the problem: rides are $4.79 for 30 minutes. I wanted to explore for a couple hours so I bought a Day Pass for $19, which seemed reasonable. Except it's not really a day pass. You're supposed to return the bike every 30 minutes and grab another one even though there's no good reason for this. If you don't, they tack on $4 plus tax for every 15 minutes after. Want to take a long leisurely ride? Too bad. You're forced to stop and start over and over. I ended up paying about $37 for 90 minutes when I thought a $19 day pass would give me freedom to ride. Felt totally ripped off.
Summer Streets events are fantastic for experiencing the city by bike. But stay away from this company. We're a family of five and got day passes, then returned our bikes at a different station after 28 minutes. We struggled to find bikes that actually worked and couldn't unlock ones that seemed fine using our code. On top of that, they billed us extra for not returning bikes that were clearly locked up. And the support team was useless - nobody could give straight answers or actually fix anything. The whole operation seems built around taking advantage of tourists. Don't waste your money.
Absolute scam. Our four-person family got hit with 270 dollars for three hours in Central Park. We purchased four day passes at 30 each and somehow got charged way more. Skip this company entirely.
They straight up stole from me. Charged $136 for 15 minutes of biking even though I had a day pass. When I tried using it again, the code wouldn't work so I didn't swipe my card to avoid more charges. Customer service didn't care and said there was nothing they could do. Looking at all the terrible reviews now, I see this is just how they operate. Don't fall for it.
This company is a rip-off and their behavior looks illegal to me. Something shady is going on and their methods should be looked into. I've had a yearly membership for a while since I use the bikes to get around this city. I rode one for ten minutes on the evening of 09/16 and docked it at a station. I didn't get the usual text confirming it was docked. When I checked the app, it showed a completely different bike number than what I actually used. I talked to their support team and explained that their system seemed to have logged the wrong bike, but they wouldn't listen. Twelve hours later the app still shows this phantom bike checked out to me, even though I never touched it.
