Gurney’s Seed and Nursery Reviews
What Shoppers Say About Gurney’s Seed and Nursery
Gurney's Seed and Nursery receives predominantly negative feedback from shoppers, with 1.4 out of 5 by 22 reviewers. The most common complaints center on poor plant and seed quality upon arrival, with customers reporting moldy potatoes, mushy produce, wilted strawberry plantlets, and roses that fail to bloom after planting. Shoppers also describe frustrating order management issues, including inventory misrepresentation, repeated shipping delays that cost growing time, cancelled items without communication, incomplete orders, and difficulty obtaining refunds (the company reportedly offers store credit instead of money back). A small number of satisfied customers report positive experiences, though positive reviews are vastly outnumbered.
The company's customer service response appears to be a recurring point of frustration. Customers report unresponsive communication when following instructions about out-of-stock items, difficulty obtaining refunds for failed plants, and lack of proactive notification when orders are cancelled. Several reviewers indicate they have switched to competitors or will not order again after multiple negative experiences, suggesting that repeat purchases are uncommon.

Sorted by: Most recentThe stuff I ordered was terrible. My purple majesty seed potatoes were okay, but the German Butter Ball variety came in mushy and moldy. I can't believe they actually shipped something in that condition. I didn't even bother asking for my money back. I won't be ordering from them again.
Back in February I placed a $200 order and got most of what I ordered, but one item was out of stock. They sent me an email saying if I didn't do anything, it would ship later in the year. I followed their instructions and waited. A few weeks ago I checked my account and the order wasn't there anymore. I emailed asking what happened and got told they'd cancelled it and refunded my card. The problem is I had already used up that gift card and gotten rid of it, so the refund is useless to me now. When I called customer service, they basically said too bad and couldn't help. I've been a customer on and off for three decades, but I'm done with this company along with their sister companies. They outsource their support overseas and make zero effort to work with customers on their issues. They had my money for eight months, then just cancelled without reaching out to let me know, even though the product is available now. Since the refund went to a gift card I no longer have, that money's gone.
I've purchased from this company on three separate occasions, and I've been let down every single time. My strawberries mostly didn't make it through the first season, and the ones that did never produced any fruit. A blueberry bush I ordered got cancelled months later with zero communication. When I tried one more time with pepper and tomato starters, half of them didn't survive and the rest barely gave me a few tomatoes. Most recently, I bought garlic and received tiny cloves that were nothing like the description. Shipping takes forever and what arrives doesn't match the pictures or promises. I've read tons of similar complaints from other customers and I honestly can't figure out how they're still operating. I'm done spending my money here.
They misled me about inventory. Once I placed my order, the shipping date kept getting pushed back, and I lost over a month of growing time waiting on delivery. When it finally arrived, I was short some of the trees I paid for. Now I'm stuck with store credit and have to wait until next season to try again. I'm going with Jung's from now on.
Stay away from this company. I recently bought a rose bush and about twenty strawberry plantlets from them and it was a complete disappointment from start to finish. The strawberry plants arrived sealed in plastic with no air circulation and sat like that for at least a week before it even shipped. When the package got to me, the plants were already dead and in worse shape than what I was trying to replace. They threw in a couple of extra plants but the whole batch was beyond saving. The rose bush came in a box that had clearly been thrown around during shipping, the soil spilled all over, and the plant was in rough condition. I had to use all my gardening knowledge just to get it back to life, but the strawberries couldn't be saved. I would strongly recommend finding a local nursery or working with a more dependable supplier instead. This was hands down my worst experience with any plant company.
I bought six miniature roses and planted them, but only two started to bloom while the other four didn't do anything. I asked for a refund through email, but they refused and said I could have a $140 credit instead. So basically if the product doesn't work, they won't give your actual money back. Look for a different nursery. Another thing - my name is Lily, but their customer service person addressed me as something totally different. Apparently they don't even look at the names when they respond. I'll use up this credit, then I'm moving on. I gave them plenty of business over the years and they treat me like this. Other companies like Home Depot don't pull this kind of stuff.
I ordered two fruit trees and a bunch of garden seeds in mid-March. The trees arrived pretty quickly but the seeds never showed up even though it's been at least six weeks. I've sent three emails trying to figure out what's going on and the first couple just told me to be patient. I've way passed the point where I could have started my own seedlings this year, so my garden is going to suffer. I'm seeing lots of other customers complaining about the same problem. This company has really fallen off. They can either give me a partial refund or they'll be facing a charge back from my credit union. It's their call.
Read what other people are saying before you buy from here, seriously. I'm only giving them a star because I have to in order to leave this review. Do NOT do business with them. Their practices and how they handle customers are very questionable. I ordered four packets of Deer Resistant Seed Mix and three packets of Hummingbird & Butterfly Annual Garden Seed on March 18th for a total of $41.79, using standard shipping. Gurney's was supposed to figure out when to ship based on my growing zone. Sounds reasonable, but it's now April 22nd and I still don't have my order. I'm way past the planting window and their overseas customer service is absolutely terrible. When I called on April 10th they said it shipped on April 1st and I needed to wait ten to fifteen days. I called again on April 18th asking for a refund and they said no, I had to wait longer because it's still within fifteen business days. They said no refunds, only store credit or reshipping the same order. I called today on April 22nd and asked again for a refund. Why would I want store credit from a company I don't trust anymore? And reshipping doesn't help when it's already too late to plant. I just want my money back. I paid for something, you didn't deliver it, and you're not holding up your end of the deal.
They're about as bad as it gets. I ordered a simple seed starter kit three weeks ago and it still hasn't arrived, but they charged my credit card right away. I don't think this is a legitimate business. Save yourself the trouble and go to a local garden center instead. I'd recommend checking out businesses like Gardner Supply in Vermont. Their customer service is absolutely the worst and they even hung up on me.
Total garbage. I ordered three sets of strawberry plants back in July. The first two sets showed up two months later and one batch was already dead on arrival. The second set died within two weeks. I just got the rest of my order and it's the middle of March now. This is completely unacceptable.
