What Shoppers Say About Gurney’s Seed and Nursery
Gurney's Seed and Nursery receives predominantly negative feedback from shoppers, with 1.4 out of 5 by 22 reviewers. The most common complaints center on poor plant and seed quality upon arrival, with customers reporting moldy potatoes, mushy produce, wilted strawberry plantlets, and roses that fail to bloom after planting. Shoppers also describe frustrating order management issues, including inventory misrepresentation, repeated shipping delays that cost growing time, cancelled items without communication, incomplete orders, and difficulty obtaining refunds (the company reportedly offers store credit instead of money back). A small number of satisfied customers report positive experiences, though positive reviews are vastly outnumbered.
The company's customer service response appears to be a recurring point of frustration. Customers report unresponsive communication when following instructions about out-of-stock items, difficulty obtaining refunds for failed plants, and lack of proactive notification when orders are cancelled. Several reviewers indicate they have switched to competitors or will not order again after multiple negative experiences, suggesting that repeat purchases are uncommon.

Sorted by: Most recentTheir seeds might be decent but the shipping costs are way too high. Four regular seed packets cost fifteen dollars with standard shipping. Their prices in general are also much higher than what you'll find from other companies doing the same thing. Because of this I'm not going back. The only reason I ordered in the first place was because I had a credit I needed to use up.
I ordered five different kinds of hardneck garlic. There was some delay because of out of stock items, but once it got here, the bulbs and cloves were incredibly small. Cloves that tiny don't produce normal size bulbs when they grow. They offered me a $20 credit toward a future purchase, but my order was over $100. A credit won't fix the fact that my June harvest is going to be disappointing.
These seed packets are misleading. Potatoes never sprouted and just turned black and shriveled. The cucumber seeds I got apparently weren't even cucumbers because something totally different grew. The leaves seemed normal at first, then flowers came, but what developed were these strange yellow balloon like growths. I'm also unsure if the fertilizer is actually what it says on the label. Only the muhly grass is making progress, and it's very slow. It's basically like ordering a quality red wine and getting grape juice shipped to you. Very deceptive.
These seed packets are full of misleading promises. Potatoes never sprouted and just turned black and shriveled up. The cucumber seeds I got apparently weren't even cucumbers because something completely different grew. The leaves looked fine at first, then the plant flowered, but what came out were these weird yellow balloon shaped things. I'm not even sure the fertilizer is what the label says it is. The muhly grass is the only thing making any progress, but it's going really slowly. It's like ordering a nice bottle of wine and getting boxed juice in the mail instead. This is just deceptive.
First time shopping with them and everything went smoothly. My blackberry bush is thriving with lots of growth and it's already showing blooms. The plant was very healthy and had great roots.
This was my first time ordering here and I'm really happy with how everything worked out. My blackberry bush has grown beautifully and it's already producing blooms. The plant itself was really healthy with great root development.
This place is not worth it if you're serious about growing things. They outsource their phone support to another country where the representatives don't understand American growing conditions. The online chat feature just connects you with automated systems. I finally got through to someone in the US after being hung up on twice, but then I waited over thirty minutes just to ask a basic question about when to plant one of their products. It's frustrating and unprofessional.
I purchased strawberry plants from them and not a single one grew. I followed the planting instructions exactly as written. The customer service was terrible. I wanted to post a review so other people would know about my experience before they made a purchase, but the website won't let you review individual products. I think that's a really shady business practice and it's dishonest.
They deserve zero stars if that were an option. Anything you order will be on backorder indefinitely. Their system shows items as out of stock, but they still take your money anyway. If you're a veteran or first responder, stay away from this scam company. Do not buy from them.
