Half Price Books Reviews
What Shoppers Say About Half Price Books
Half Price Books receives overwhelmingly negative feedback, with shoppers reporting significant problems across both buying and selling experiences. Customers who attempt to sell books to the store describe shockingly low buyback offers, receiving only dollars for collections worth hundreds. Those purchasing online encounter frequent inventory misrepresentation, particularly regarding book format and condition, and report slow or non-existent customer service when attempting to resolve issues or process returns. Several shoppers mention being charged for return shipping on items that arrived incorrectly, and one customer reported an unrefunded order after submitting return tracking confirmation. A small percentage of reviewers appear satisfied, likely reflecting positive experiences, but the dominant pattern shows customers feeling deceived by pricing practices and disappointed by the company's responsiveness to complaints.
The store's reputation for being a destination for affordable used books appears damaged by current operations. Shoppers note that prices for used inventory rival new book prices at other retailers, and the buyback program offers minimal compensation compared to listed online values. Issues with order fulfillment, including receiving different formats or editions than ordered, suggest systemic inventory management problems. Customers express frustration that the company has "lost what made it worthwhile" and actively warn others against purchasing from or selling to Half Price Books.

Sorted by: Most recentI showed up to sell 14 books and had already looked up the prices for 10 of those titles on their website. Those 10 alone were listed as being worth around $347 total. I figured I wouldn't get the full resale price, but was stunned when they offered me only $5 for all 14 books combined. I get that they need to make profit, but this was way too low and felt shady. There's no transparency here, and customers aren't getting treated fairly. I'd tell anyone selling books here to shop around first and think carefully about whether it's even worth your time.
At the location in Humble, I found used books selling for new book prices, barely anything offered for trade-ins, and regular titles oddly marked up as rare collectibles. This store has lost what made it worthwhile. I can't recommend going there to buy or sell anymore.
They deserve worse than one star! They shipped the wrong book, dragged their feet processing the return, made me pay for return shipping, and even with tracking confirmation that they received it, they still won't refund my money. I've gotten no response to any of my messages. This happened at one of their Texas locations. Don't purchase anything from any of their stores!
Multiple times I've ordered what the listing said was hardcover, only to get a paperback in the mail instead. It's happened enough times that I sometimes forget who the dishonest seller was until it happens again. They clearly misrepresent their inventory on purpose, and on top of that, I have to pay to ship the wrong item back. This is frustrating and deceptive.
I bought what was supposed to be a used hardcover, but instead received a new paperback with tiny photocopied pages. The delivery was fast, at least, but that doesn't make up for getting completely different merchandise than what I ordered.
I ordered a specific manga volume at the start of October and it was supposed to arrive by the 24th. Even though that seemed like a long delivery window, I accepted it, but the package never showed. I was able to get my money back through another retailer. I definitely wouldn't recommend buying from them based on this experience.
Watch out before you bring anything in! I had over 220 Christian history and romance novels by well-known authors, all in excellent shape, and brought them to their location. I could see those same books sitting on the shelves for $5 to $7 each. They offered me $40 for everything, which comes out to less than twenty cents per book. It was insulting and shocking, especially after seeing the misleading information on their website about what they'll pay. I drove two hours round trip just to basically give them my books so they could make huge profits. I'd rather donate to charity next time.
These people are absolute con artists. I brought 24 books including textbooks and education books all in perfect condition and worth serious money, and they gave me just $31. It's completely scandalous and a total ripoff.
There are more books sitting in the dumpsters outside their location than actually in the store. Four full dumpsters! An employee who was about 5'5 with brown hair and glasses even threatened to call police when I was looking through them. These books weren't damaged and were in great shape, including vintage titles. They're basically book burners. This employee should be fired. In this state, it's legal to take things from a dumpster, and there weren't even warning signs on these overflowing bins. Don't bother selling your books there because they'll underpay you and then just throw them away. I won't shop there again.
