Half Price Books Reviews
What Shoppers Say About Half Price Books
Half Price Books receives overwhelmingly negative feedback, with shoppers reporting significant problems across both buying and selling experiences. Customers who attempt to sell books to the store describe shockingly low buyback offers, receiving only dollars for collections worth hundreds. Those purchasing online encounter frequent inventory misrepresentation, particularly regarding book format and condition, and report slow or non-existent customer service when attempting to resolve issues or process returns. Several shoppers mention being charged for return shipping on items that arrived incorrectly, and one customer reported an unrefunded order after submitting return tracking confirmation. A small percentage of reviewers appear satisfied, likely reflecting positive experiences, but the dominant pattern shows customers feeling deceived by pricing practices and disappointed by the company's responsiveness to complaints.
The store's reputation for being a destination for affordable used books appears damaged by current operations. Shoppers note that prices for used inventory rival new book prices at other retailers, and the buyback program offers minimal compensation compared to listed online values. Issues with order fulfillment, including receiving different formats or editions than ordered, suggest systemic inventory management problems. Customers express frustration that the company has "lost what made it worthwhile" and actively warn others against purchasing from or selling to Half Price Books.

Sorted by: Most recentI'm really pleased with the way their customer service team took care of my problems. The whole team was respectful, helpful, quick to respond, and genuinely cared about solving my issue. They went above and beyond. Really grateful for their help!
I tried updating my original review but the system wouldn't let me. I had trouble getting my issue fixed at first when I received a book in poor condition even though it was listed as very good, but they eventually made it right and issued a refund. Once I sent photos showing how bad the book actually was, they were really accommodating and helpful. I'm satisfied with how they handled it in the end.
If you're ordering used books online from them through other sites, know that every single book gets rated as very good regardless of what it actually looks like. I found out the hard way when 3 out of 4 books I got were really in good condition at best, not very good, with lots of creasing, ripped pages, and damaged bindings. Their customer service is poor too. Yes, I could return them and get refunds but it was annoying and a hassle. I really expected better from a store I've liked when shopping in person. My advice to them would be to just grade everything as good so people who want nicer copies won't order, while people just wanting something to read will still buy and probably be fine with it.
My daughter brought in 17 books and was offered so little money that she couldn't even buy a single book with what they gave her. I understand businesses need to profit, but this crosses a line. We won't be buying or selling there anymore.
After years of being a regular customer and spending considerable money at this store, I'm disappointed and unlikely to return. I brought in some books to sell during a tough financial time, but the offer was nowhere near what they're actually worth. The staff showed no empathy about my situation, which really bothered me. I know the value of what I was selling, and honestly, it seems like the people working there don't have a clue about pricing. It's frustrating to feel taken advantage of when you need the help most. I won't be shopping here again once I get back on my feet, and I'll definitely tell people to look elsewhere if they ask me about this place.
I spent more than an hour waiting while their staff evaluated my books. I had three boxes including signed copies, five hardcover mysteries, and various other editions, but they only offered me $15. It was a complete waste of my time.
I bought a textbook through another site, but the seller turned out to be this company. The price was good but I paid about $40 for the faster shipping option. I placed the order in August, and it's now October with the package stuck in customs for over a month. I understand shipping problems happen, but their customer service response has been terrible and it's clear nobody is actually reading my emails. I keep getting generic responses about tracking and being told to contact my postal service. I spent over $40 to ship a $5 textbook that I needed in September, and they won't help. They could file a claim through the shipper to recover shipping costs, but instead they're acting like once it left their hands, it's not their responsibility. While the shipping delay isn't entirely their fault, the way they've blown me off says a lot about how they treat customers.
I ordered a book online and it was supposed to arrive via USPS. The tracking showed it was delivered, but I never actually got it. When I emailed customer service, they basically said it was delivered according to their records and told me to check with neighbors or contact the post office myself. That's not how customer service should work. A legitimate company should have a proper process for handling lost packages instead of just keeping the money and telling customers it's not their problem. Their policy seems to be collect payment and call it a day if something goes wrong.
I'm not selling my books here anymore. They pay almost nothing for books that they turn around and sell for huge markups. At this point, I'd rather donate them to Goodwill or any other thrift store. The drive, the time, and the gas aren't worth the pocket change they're offering.
I'm finished with this place. When I went to the Northwest Hwy location to sell books, I was told I couldn't use a cart to unload from my car before getting in line. After grabbing one with an employee, I was told it would be an hour and a half and I had to stay in the store the whole time. When they called my name, I was sent to the back of the line to get paid. When I questioned this since it's never happened before, the worker snapped at me and said they weren't about to shuffle other customers around for me. I had four boxes with several hardbacks and got only $12. They're making a killing off people like me while treating us like garbage and being disrespectful. It's insulting.
