Marine Layer Reviews
What Shoppers Say About Marine Layer
Marine Layer has a polarized customer base with sharply divided opinions. Supporters praise the quality of clothing items, speedy shipping at no charge, and generous return windows. However, the majority of reviewers report serious concerns: inventory mismanagement (items listed as in stock that are unavailable after purchase), billing and payment processing issues (concerns about card security and data compromise), difficulty applying advertised discount codes at checkout, and quality control problems with certain items like wool products pilling after minimal wear. Several negative reviews question the company's legitimacy and operational transparency.
The 2.3 rating from 19 shoppers reflects this stark divide, with 63 percent giving one star and 32 percent giving five stars, while almost no middle-ground ratings exist. Shoppers considering Marine Layer should carefully verify inventory status before purchasing, pay close attention to discount code terms, and thoroughly review their card statements post-purchase.
Customer Reviews (19)
Sorted by: Most recentSetting the clothes aside, this brand has some of the strongest customer service around. Really impressed with how they treat people!
They take down critical reviews and combine different fabric materials in single items that are basically impossible to clean properly. Also if you have any real leg size, their stretchy sweatpants are basically the only sad option.
Should have looked at these reviews sooner. It's frustrating that so many people have gone through the same terrible customer service as me. Marine Layer's phone line always goes unanswered, emails don't get helpful responses, and their Berkeley store staff is really rude. Their new Re-Spun program is deceptive. You pay about twenty-two dollars (twenty plus shipping fees) for a bag to get a forty-dollar discount. But if you're not happy with whatever you buy with that forty dollars, or it doesn't fit right, you're stuck. That credit is gone, so your money is wasted. They won't give you that credit back. The person helping me in store didn't even mention any other options before telling me my forty-dollar credit disappeared. I loved the old Re-Spun donation system but this version feels like a scam. After years of shopping with them, Marine Layer has lost my business and apparently doesn't even care.
I purchased something online and used my Re-Spun Take Back Bag credit to pay. When the item didn't fit correctly, I sent it back. They then told me there was no refund or store credit available, which meant I basically threw away my forty-dollar reward even though I wanted to buy something else. That seems really unfair considering all the clothing I donated through Re-Spun. They've lost me as a repeat customer.
Their recycling program isn't as green as it seems anymore since they mail you an envelope that you have to send back, and it costs you twenty dollars to get forty in return. Seems like they don't have email or phone support either. And when you go into the actual store, the staff isn't very helpful and doesn't seem interested in helping customers. What's going on?
My experience with this company was disappointing, unprofessional, and they didn't respond to me. I'm done spending money here and would advise others to look elsewhere. I bought several things, and one didn't fit right. When I tried to return it, they claimed it was marked final sale even though I showed them screenshots proving the product page, cart, and checkout all said free returns with nothing about final sale restrictions. Their phone support basically doesn't exist. I exchanged emails with someone who was dismissive, refused to apologize, and acted really sketchy. Eventually they just stopped responding. It's been over a week and I'm still waiting to get my refund sorted out.
The actual store is fantastic. I usually have great experiences shopping there and their stuff is wonderful. But my online order was a total mess. I paid for express delivery, and they sat on my order for a full day without updating me. When I asked for a status update the next morning, nothing. Asked again the following day and got told they'd already shipped it, which was completely false. All they'd done was create a UPS label showing a 5-day delivery window. I asked them to please refund me since I needed it for a trip and the timing was now ruined. Their response was that they couldn't because it was supposedly already sent (it wasn't, just labeled). They basically said just send it back when it arrives. But that misses the whole point. I don't want it arriving five days late after I've already left for my vacation. I sent them proof from the UPS tracker showing it hadn't actually shipped yet, and asked again to cancel and get my money back since the arrival date was now too late. Still no resolution.
