Routledge Reviews
What Shoppers Say About Routledge
Routledge receives overwhelmingly negative feedback, with the majority of shoppers reporting serious fulfillment and customer service problems. Customers consistently cite unprocessed refunds, non-responsive support staff, undelivered orders, and misleading product information (particularly regarding ebook compatibility and physical book dimensions). Several reviewers describe extended delays spanning months with little communication, and some question the legitimacy of the operation. A smaller group of shoppers who received physical books report quality issues including faded ink, flimsy paper, and binding concerns that do not justify the premium pricing.
The few positive reviews (representing 17 percent of ratings) suggest that some customers do receive satisfactory service, though these accounts are substantially outnumbered by complaints. Price markups relative to competitors are also a recurring concern, with shoppers noting that identical titles cost significantly less elsewhere. The consistent themes of unresponsive customer service, order non-fulfillment, and refund delays appear across recent reviews, indicating systemic operational challenges rather than isolated incidents.

Sorted by: Most recentThis was hands down my worst online shopping experience. First, they hit my credit card with a 9% import tax that wasn't mentioned anywhere when I ordered from Europe. Then I waited a month with zero updates until someone from the distribution company finally told me the package came back as undeliverable and nobody even bothered to let me know. They offered a refund or resend, but wouldn't give back the import tax, so I picked resend and asked to change my address since I was moving. They said the replacement was processed but didn't mention I'd get taxed again. When I asked about tracking, it took 5 days to hear back and another 10 days of back-and-forth emails to get clarification. The UPS redelivery also failed to arrive even though I was home waiting for it. At the pickup location they wanted another 21% in import tax. I questioned Hachette about why it wasn't the regular book tax rate and got a reply 6 days later that didn't really answer the question.
Do not shop at Routledge. Their customer service is unacceptable. I ordered an expensive book but they never charged me. My card might have been declined, but I've sent loads of emails to different departments trying to let them know and gotten nowhere. I've called several times and each time someone says they'll transfer me to the right person and then disconnects. Can't get in touch with anyone. I'm stressed about getting stuck with an unpaid bill for this book because the company can't manage to respond to me. I don't want to risk them suddenly charging my card six months from now when I can't cover it. I thought buying directly from the publisher would be professional and reliable, but it's the complete opposite. Go with a different seller.
I'm not sure why Routledge operates the way they do, but I had a really frustrating experience. I'm working on my Master's degree and found a book they publish that I thought I needed. I went ahead and ordered it, though it wasn't cheap. Hours later I discovered I could get digital access to the same content. I emailed them that very day to cancel before shipment. I tried calling customer service but nobody answered. When I finally got an email back after days of silence, they said the order shipped already and can't be returned. I'm skeptical of that claim since I never got a shipping notification until well after I sent my support email. Why operate a customer service team if you're going to handle customers like this? I feel ripped off honestly. I gave them plenty of chances to fix it. All I can say is that if you're considering buying here, think twice.
