Traeger Grills receives polarized feedback from shoppers, with the majority reporting significant problems. The most common complaints center on reliability issues, including digital displays failing within the first year, temperature control problems (grills shutting off or not reaching target temperatures), and overall poor product durability despite premium pricing. Many reviewers express frustration with customer service experiences, citing long wait times, difficulty understanding representatives, and what they perceive as unhelpful or dismissive support staff. A smaller group of satisfied customers report positive experiences with Traeger's warranty service, noting that representatives went above and beyond to help resolve issues, though these positive experiences appear less frequent.

The stark division in ratings reflects a company struggling with product quality and customer service consistency. While some shoppers have had their issues resolved through extended support efforts, the overwhelming majority feel that Traeger's high price point is not justified by the product's performance and longevity. Several reviewers mention considering competitor brands like Pit Boss and Masterbuilt as alternatives, suggesting that negative experiences are driving customers away from the brand.

Bought a Traeger 575 pro thinking they made the best pellet grills around and I couldn't have been more wrong. The digital display quit working within the first year and even though it was under warranty, getting Traeger to help was impossible. They kept making excuses instead of just replacing it, so I ended up buying a replacement part myself. Now the paint inside the lid is peeling and flaking into my food, making meals inedible. When I called about it, they acted like it was normal and refused to help. The quality is really disappointing and the temperature swings are so crazy that you're constantly fiddling with settings just to cook something halfway decent. I wish I'd read more reviews before spending this kind of money. Learned the hard way that Traeger isn't what I thought it was.

Would rate it lower if I could! Absolutely terrible experience. Our Ironwood XL stopped working after just over a year of light use. Customer support is a pain to deal with. I don't mind call centers but these reps don't speak clearly, so it's hard to understand what they're telling you. They keep putting you on hold and just read straight from the manual with no actual product knowledge. Honestly could learn more from a YouTube video. But when you're not handy with mechanical stuff, it's scary having to disassemble the electrical components yourself. This is an expensive way to learn that Traeger is not the brand to go with.

Honestly shocked by the negative reviews about Traeger. I had problems too and thought my grill was done for. Dialed up customer service, waited about an hour but figured that's normal. The representative spent 2 and a half hours with me trying to solve it. My grill had actually expired warranty 3 months prior. They shipped an auger free of charge without any pushback. When that didn't fix it, I called back and after another hour of troubleshooting, the rep figured out the controller was the issue. They sent a replacement controller with no argument. They tracked the delivery and even called to confirm I got it installed and working. Great news, it fixed everything. Grilled up some perfect steaks the next night.

I've been smoking meat for decades and my Masterbuilt has been incredible for large events at the camp for almost 5 years. Decided to drop nearly 2 grand on an Ironwood 885 and it's the worst call I've made. The smoke flavor is barely there even after smoking for 12 hours. Going to try Pit Boss Austin instead and returning this one to the store. Would never suggest Traeger to anyone. For the price you're paying, the meat quality just doesn't match up. All their hype is just about the name. The actual smoked meat quality is really bad.

Had my smoker less than a year when it started throwing errors between 170 and 190 degrees and would shut itself off. Couldn't reach full temperature. I did all the maintenance exactly as instructed with no luck. Reached out to support and spent forever on the phone. They had me take the whole thing apart, disconnect wires, jump on video calls so they could see what I was doing. Eventually they said they couldn't figure out what was wrong and claimed they'd send a complete replacement of the side assembly including hopper, controller, and auger motor. Two weeks go by and I get a single wire in a package. Called back six times, each time on hold for an hour and a half. Finally connected with someone new who said there was no replacement order and what I got was just an igniter. But the previous tech said the pellets were igniting and burning fine so that didn't make sense. This new person wanted me to spend another two hours going through the whole diagnostic process again. Meanwhile I'm losing work hours and they won't stand behind their warranty.

Total letdown. I upgraded from my older model to a Silverton XL, thinking the extra features and convenience would be worth it. My first cook should've been a red flag when everything finished in half the time I expected at 225 degrees. I figured it was just better insulation but that kept happening with every cook. The food was coming out too fast and lacking smoke flavor. So I grabbed three independent temperature probes to check things out. Turns out the grill runs 40 to 50 degrees hotter than what I set it to, and the higher I go, the worse it gets. At 300 it was hitting almost 380. I contacted support and got responses that seemed like they were written by an AI. They tried to tell me being within 20 degrees of set temp is normal and started arguing that third party probes aren't accurate, saying the grill just needed cleaning, etc. They completely ignored that my food was burning at 225 and that all three of my other probes matched within a degree while only the Traeger was way off. After an hour and a half they finally agreed to send a replacement coupler, but the whole experience was frustrating.

Absolute garbage. From day one this thing never worked right. Customer service was a nightmare. Swapped out the auger and the controller and it still wasn't working. Ruined tons of food and spent ridiculous amounts of time calling support. Throwing out this junk from China and getting a Recteq instead, which is actually made in the USA. I'm done with Traeger.

David M.Feb 26, 2025

Total waste of money. This grill didn't work properly right out of the box. The support team is useless. I replaced the auger and the control panel and it still had problems. Wasted so much food trying to figure it out and spent way too many hours on calls with support. Got tired of dealing with poor quality imports so I'm scrapping it and switching to a USA-made Recteq. Done with Traeger.

Marcus T.Sep 8, 2024

The actual customer service experience is decent, but getting replacement parts shipped out takes forever. Was promised it in 3 days but that never happened. Delivery times are frustratingly slow.

My first Traeger worked great. The second one wouldn't keep temperature below 225. I dealt with it until it finally broke down completely. Then I made the mistake of buying a third and this one won't hold the temperature you set it to above smoke level, like at 250. It drops down to 123 then jumps up over 500. Bought in March but didn't start using until August so I'm past the return window. Now I'm selling it online and getting a different brand. I'm telling everyone I know to stay away from this company. Never going back. Junk.

Christopher N.Jul 9, 2024

Hoping to save someone from making this mistake. This company has terrible and unprofessional customer service. Once they've got your cash, they couldn't care less about helping you with anything, even when there are real problems or shipping issues. They'll invent policies to avoid helping out. The staff's lack of effort caused my problems, and instead of owning it, the company tried to pin it on me. Get your credit card company involved because I bet a bunch of other people have been treated the same way.

Just picked up a Timberline XL and the delivery situation was a nightmare. Ordered through Traeger's site but once it left the warehouse, they had zero information about where it was or when it would show up. Had to track down the shipping company myself and went to pick it up rather than wait. Made so many calls trying to figure out who had it. Fresh out of the box with new pellets and the temperature won't stay consistent. Set to 250 and it bounces 20 to 30 degrees up and way more down. Takes double the time my Green Mountain needs for a brisket. Lose 30 to 50 degrees the second you lift the lid. The settings and digital display look nice and are straightforward to use. Runs pretty quiet unless you use super smoke. Tons of recipe options. Honestly, coming from other smokers to a Traeger is a tough adjustment. It's just not as simple. It's well built though, took my son and me a couple hours to put together. Mine came with wireless thermostats but they never functioned right. Set them up on Bluetooth but they weren't even close to working correctly.

Grabbed an Ironwood grill less than a year ago. Used it just 5 or 6 times. Started getting sensor errors and now it won't function. Spent over an hour on support calls. They had me take it apart, unplugging and reconnecting cables. Nothing worked. This is overpriced, way too complicated, and just plain broken. Tossing it out.

William E.May 26, 2024

Should've gone with a different brand. The grill is fine but nothing special. For 4 grand it ought to be excellent quality. The Traeger app stinks. It loses connection almost every time I'm in the middle of a smoke. Get this unhelpful error that says 'Oops Something went wrong. Try again later.' Super helpful, right? I definitely won't be buying another Traeger.

Amanda C.Nov 14, 2022

Just finished talking with the support team and had an amazing experience. Tammy got on the line and spent over an hour walking me through how to diagnose the issue. She was fantastic and is sending out a replacement auger motor covered under warranty at no charge. This has been some of the best customer service I've ever gotten.
