American Meadows Reviews
What Shoppers Say About American Meadows
American Meadows shoppers are deeply divided. Half of reviewers give five-star ratings and report excellent experiences with reliable seed germination, healthy plant arrivals, and responsive customer service. These satisfied customers have placed repeat orders over years and praise the company's careful packaging and quality. However, the other half cite serious problems: seeds that fail to sprout despite repeated purchases, plants arriving in poor condition (pot-bound, waterlogged, or dead on arrival), incomplete orders missing plants from bundles, and inadequate replacements when issues are reported. Some customers note that even when the company responds to complaints, the solutions fall short of expectations.
The polarized ratings suggest inconsistency in product quality or fulfillment. Shipping delays are mentioned as a minor inconvenience by satisfied customers but may compound problems for those receiving damaged goods. Reviewers experiencing issues report frustration with the gap between what the company promises and what actually arrives, with some concluding that local garden centers are more reliable despite the convenience factor of online ordering.

Sorted by: Most recentOver several years I've purchased hundreds of pounds of their seed and consistently gotten disappointing results. At first I thought maybe it was something I was doing wrong, but now I'm confident their seed isn't living up to what they promise. On top of that, I got an unusual amount of ragweed sprouting in the areas where I planted their seed. Not sure if it came from them or if something else was going on, but the problem was way worse in those spots.
Been getting zinnias and sunflowers from them for years now. Shipping takes a while, but the seeds always come up great.
Ordered two hydrangeas, two silver leaf vines, and a pre-planned shady garden package that was supposed to have seventeen plants. Only got thirteen total - four were missing from the bundle. The ones that showed up were either severely pot-bound or soaked with water, and none of them look healthy. I reached out to complain and they responded the next day asking for pictures. Couldn't exactly photograph the plants that never arrived, but I did include a photo of their pathetic hydrangea sitting next to a beautiful one I bought at Home Depot for the exact same price. Still haven't heard back and nothing's been made right. I'm an experienced gardener and was interested in trying their pre-planned groupings, but now I realize I could've gotten the same design advice from an AI and picked healthier plants locally for way less money. Also planted their morning glories two weeks ago and they still haven't even broken through the soil.
I've been ordering from these folks for quite a while. Seeds sprout reliably and their customer service has always been solid.
First time ordering from this company and I'm really impressed. Put in a 250 dollar order for plants that would bring in hummingbirds after seeing some in my yard last year. Everything arrived right on schedule, packed super carefully, and the plants were still moist and healthy when they got here. All the different varieties are growing like crazy with all the spring rain we've had in the upper Midwest. I've been gardening for decades as a hobby and can't say enough good things about them. They carry harder to find plants that other greenhouses don't stock, and the quality is consistently high. Definitely buying from them next year too. Really the best greenhouse operation I've found.
Plants arrived in rough shape. Three of the four I ordered were already gone when the package showed up. I contacted them about their guarantee and they sent replacements, but only two instead of three. Wouldn't you know it, one of those replacements came dead too. Lesson learned the hard way - I'll just stick with my local garden center from now on.
I've got serious gardening credentials. Started doing landscaping work right after school under someone with decades of experience, then ran my own landscaping side job for 20 years while doing other work. I know plants. When I picked up the property next door, it was mostly grass, so I decided to turn it into a wildflower meadow. Read the expert guide cover to cover twice. Spent 90 bucks on seed, prepped the ground perfectly with a quality tiller, mixed everything with sand evenly, planted it all, and rolled it in a crosshatch pattern. It looked picture perfect. Late November in Central New York, right after some serious freezes. The small test area I did with seed from another company? Absolutely thriving. But the American Meadows seed? Maybe 5 percent is even sprouting. I took photos, made calls, and got nothing but disappointment. To make it worse, they keep hitting me with daily promotional emails.
Honestly, this is the best mail order plant company around. Last year I ordered several plants and they showed up super fast in amazing packaging. These were actual grown plants, not just bare roots or twigs like you get from some other places. Every single one took off and did great. When a couple didn't make it through the winter, they stepped up with their guarantee. They gave me options and I picked store credit good for a year and a half. Even during their crazy busy season, someone took the time to chat with me about my garden and help me succeed next time. The prices are fair compared to other places. Sure, you might find cheaper elsewhere, but you're getting way better value here. Their customer service is genuine, and honestly that's rare. I'm only ordering my mail order plants from them going forward.
The packing was terrible. I got 16 coneflower plants shipped with nothing but a hairnet over them. Almost everything was bounced around and broken, dirt scattered everywhere, roots exposed and the soil completely dried out. I won't be ordering from them anymore.
Only got one of two boxes even though the tracking number said both were delivered. Checked the security footage and confirmed only one showed up. Inside was basically loose dirt and empty pots with some battered plants tossed around. The plants weren't even secured in their holders like they should've been for shipping. Three quarters of my order is missing and what did arrive is basically destroyed. Sent them a message through their support form on the box insert and got nothing back. Called their support number and got disconnected pretty quickly. Tried a different number from the shipping label and got put on hold for way too long with no answer. About to dispute the charge. Total disaster and won't order from them again. Update: The second box finally came four days later in even worse condition. More photos, more messages sent, and I've been on hold for hours multiple times still waiting for someone to actually pick up.
