What Shoppers Say About Zabar’s
Shoppers are deeply divided on Zabar's, with significant quality concerns dominating recent feedback. The main complaint centers on online orders falling short of in-person purchases at their physical location, particularly regarding bagels that reviewers describe as indistinguishable from supermarket quality rather than the boiled-and-baked product expected from a specialty retailer. Additional issues include quality control problems (overseasoned items, spoiled gefilte fish, tough vegetables), unresponsive customer service when orders arrive incomplete or damaged, and difficulty canceling mailing lists. Pricing also frustrates customers, who feel delivery costs compound the already steep prices.
A smaller segment of reviewers appreciate the store's in-store experience and certain items like applesauce and rugelach, and some report successful online purchases. However, the frequency of complaints about product quality, order fulfillment, and customer service responsiveness suggests these positive experiences may be inconsistent. The Z-Peat membership program receives particular criticism for poor dispute resolution, with at least one long-term customer reporting the retailer was unwilling to resolve a missing item issue.

Sorted by: Most recentWon't be getting bagels from them again. They're barely better than what you'd find at a supermarket. Where are the real boiled and baked bagels with that crispy outside, dense inside, and actual holes? Maybe ordering online is the issue. I bought a holiday package for my family and honestly could've made better bagels myself. The rugelach was decent at least.
I've always liked what I pick up at their Broadway location, but the online stuff is completely different. Their bagels and rugelach are just standard grocery store quality. Also, once you get on their mailing list, you'll be getting catalogs forever and can't seem to get off it.
My order arrived on schedule but the quality was terrible. The garlic knishes had an overwhelming amount of garlic nobody could eat them. The gefilte fish was slimy and had a foul smell, so I threw it out. The stuffed cabbage had decent meat but the cabbage itself was impossible to cut with a sharp knife or even chew. Really disappointed and won't be ordering again.
Don't sign up for their Z-Peat membership. The company or whoever runs that program won't help if something goes wrong with your order. I'd been a loyal customer for almost a decade, and they basically chose to lose me over one missed bag of coffee rather than make it right. There are tons of other good coffee options out there. Look elsewhere.
Watch out with online orders. I ordered 4 bags of coffee and one never showed up. The packing slip noted it was out of stock. When I called within 30 days, they told me it was too late and there was nothing they could do, even though they claimed it was in stock when I ordered. Zero replacement offer, no credit, nothing. I also submitted a request through their website that went unanswered, and I have no way to prove when I sent it.
Mostly uninteresting food served at really steep prices (the applesauce is actually great, that's the exception). Might be better if you go in person but we only get it delivered, and every time someone in the family orders it, they can't stop talking about how much they paid including shipping. We keep saying they shouldn't have but somehow that just eggs them on. At this point we eat a huge lunch beforehand just so we're not tempted to actually eat what shows up.
Ordered four items online and received red wine vinegar instead of sherry. Took three calls just to reach someone. When I asked for a replacement since good sherry vinegar isn't available where I live, they said yes. It never arrived, so I called back to find out they'd issued a refund instead. Now I'd have to pay shipping again if I want to get the right vinegar. Customer service refused to cover shipping even though it was clearly their error.
Placed a holiday order on November 28 to arrive December 29 and got a confirmation number. When it didn't show, I called customer service and found out they'd canceled it without telling me. Never got any cancellation email. My New Year's Eve dinner plans got wrecked. Absolutely terrible service.
Got a large New York Breakfast package delivered for my grandson's Bris in the city. From start to finish, everything went smoothly. The order arrived ahead of schedule, beautifully packaged, and I could just pull everything out and set it on the table without hassle. The amount of food was incredible, way more than expected for 15 people (honestly fed about 20). The smoked salmon, bagels, rugelach, cakes, babka, and croissants were all fantastic. They included cream cheese, butter, tomatoes, onions, and capers too. Couldn't have asked for a better experience.
