What Shoppers Say About Universal Cycles
Universal Cycles receives polarized reviews that split sharply between enthusiastic repeat customers and frustrated first-time buyers. Satisfied shoppers praise the website's usability, detailed product information, fast shipping (including same-day delivery reported), free shipping offers, and responsive customer service. Long-term customers highlight reliable stock availability and consistent quality. However, nearly half of reviewers report significant problems. Common complaints center on strict return policies that reject used items and require original packaging, with customers noting the policies prevent testing products before committing. Service issues include delayed shipping, defective products upon arrival, and unresponsive support when handling returns. Shop service complaints involve scope creep (unauthorized work) and parts substitutions made without customer approval.
The stark divide in ratings suggests Universal Cycles delivers well for established customers familiar with its policies and requirements, but creates friction with new customers who encounter return restrictions and shipping delays. The store appears strongest in product selection and online ordering but weaker in return flexibility and proactive customer support when problems arise.

Sorted by: Most recentHaven't gone back in ages after a bad experience. I asked for a frame to be refinished in matte black but got it back in gloss instead because the shop owner said it looked better. He also put on his own decals when I had my own ready to install. Then there was my Campagnolo Chorus headset that he claimed wouldn't fit, so he used something different. When I picked it up, he said I never gave him a headset to work with, which makes no sense since he had called me earlier to say it wouldn't fit.
Great experience from start to finish. Service was excellent, the return policy is solid, and they answered my questions quickly. Really happy with how everything went.
Grabbed a shifter and brake lever from them and dealing with this company was a nightmare. The order sat around forever and shipping was glacial. When I finally got everything on my bike, the shifter turned out to be defective. I tried to return it within 30 days and their support basically said I had to remove the parts first and that the manufacturer should handle the warranty claim instead. Pretty ridiculous. Shop somewhere else if you value a reasonable return process.
Been a customer for years now and UC keeps delivering. The website is simple to use, product info is detailed, and you know right away what's in stock. Free shipping is fantastic too. My most recent order literally showed up at my house within 24 hours.
Their return policy is really restrictive. They won't accept returns on anything that's been used. How are customers supposed to test something before committing to keeping it? That policy alone is enough to make me shop somewhere else.
Had a terrible experience trying to return something we got as a gift that didn't work out for us. I'd accidentally tossed the original packaging so I sent it in a regular box that was packed well. They rejected the return and wouldn't even offer store credit. I understand their policy requires original packaging, but it seems like they could've worked with me on selling it as open box merchandise or something. Won't be back.
Got a road fork from them at a great price and it showed up right when they said it would with no issues. Later I ordered a Shimano 12 speed Ultegra groupset and had the same positive experience, excellent pricing and on time delivery. I think their lower prices come from running a lean operation with a smaller team handling tons of orders. As long as you know exactly what you're ordering, I'll definitely shop there again.
Bought a Chris King bottom bracket and unfortunately it had a manufacturing defect with the threading that prevented installation. Really disappointing given how expensive the part is. I contacted UC and they partnered with Chris King to handle the warranty. They covered my return shipping and sent out a replacement in a couple weeks, and the new one worked perfectly. Seriously impressed with how they went above and beyond on this one.
Recently I ordered parts that supposedly had tons of stock across multiple locations. They said Nevada was fulfilling my order. A week went by with no shipping confirmation, so I reached out. Their response was that weather caused the delay. Give me a break. The weather was fine and highways from Nevada to California were totally clear. Feels like I'm being fed excuses and honestly, with how busy they are, I don't think they care about keeping customers like me happy.
This was such a frustrating ordering experience. You have to enter both billing and shipping addresses when you check out, but what they don't tell you upfront is that if those don't match exactly, they won't process your order due to fraud concerns. Other bike retailers don't have this problem as long as your card matches your billing address. Plus they supposedly email you about the issue, but if that message lands in spam and you don't respond, they just cancel the whole thing without following up. When I finally got through to their Oregon location, they basically said that's their policy and wouldn't work with me at all. I traveled from out of the country specifically to get components for a build and this was the only place that dropped the ball.
