Hot Topic, Inc Reviews
Box Lunch has an extremely poor reputation among shoppers, rated 1.3 out of 5 by 19 reviewers. The dominant complaints center on billing failures: multiple reviewers report being charged twice or more for cancelled orders, with refunds taking months or never materializing. Additional recurring issues include misleading pricing (items charged at full price despite showing discounts online), restrictive promotion terms (free items cancelled on buy-one-get-one deals, store credit unusable on most products), inventory problems (items listed as in stock but unavailable for pickup or delivery), and unresponsive customer service with inadequate contact options.
Very few shoppers report positive experiences. One reviewer gave four stars, noting that all interactions were positive but wishing the online inventory were available in physical stores. The overwhelming pattern in reviews is frustration with billing practices, lack of transparency in pricing and promotion mechanics, failure to fulfill orders, and difficulty resolving issues with customer support. Shoppers describe the operation as unreliable and advise others to avoid the platform.
I tried placing an order for someone, used their info but my address for billing since mine was different. They charged me but then cancelled due to a card issue. I tried again with a different payment method and got charged once more, only to have it cancelled again. Now I'm out over $200 waiting for refunds to process back. I'm international and just wanted to send a gift to someone in the States, but their system won't accept different billing and shipping addresses. If it fails, the money still disappears from your account, which shouldn't be legal.
Where do I even begin with Box Lunch? They cancel the free item on buy-two-get-one deals, they won't ship from stores to your home, and they won't transfer things between locations. Then they issue store credit but won't let you use it on most of their own branded products. And the pricing scheme is shady - items are priced just below the threshold so you can't stack your coupons. A bag costs $79.90 instead of $80 so you can only use one $20 coupon instead of two. It's calculated manipulation. I'm buying way less because of this nonsense. The inventory system is terrible too, and even their own customer service reps can't tell you what's actually in stock. It's a mess of a company.
Just a bogus operation. They charged me and never sent my item. I asked for a refund, got charged again instead. It's been three months and I haven't seen my money back. I listened to the manager on the phone talking to some corporate person who promised my refund within five days. Still waiting. They're thieves. Don't go there. Also, never order Funko Pops from them - 100% lies about having inventory and a warehouse.
I grabbed a bunch of cute stuff that was supposedly on sale, but I got charged full price instead. What should've cost me $56 ended up being $96. The items are still showing as discounted on their site. Trying to reach customer service has been a pain because their contact form has this tiny character limit - I'd need to fill out like 3 different forms just to explain my whole situation. Over 15 years I've had zero issues ordering from Hot Topic, but Box Lunch messed up on my first purchase with them. Pretty impressive how badly they dropped the ball.
All my experiences here have been nothing but positive. Only wish they'd stock all their online items in the physical stores as well.
I ordered a Christmas present for my daughter for in-store pickup that should've arrived by mid-December. When I checked, one of the items is out of stock now and won't make it for Christmas. Nothing else is really comparable in terms of what she wanted. I tried reaching out to customer service multiple times but all they say is sorry and that they can't help. Now I'm scrambling to find something else.
Shopping in person at the store is fantastic, but ordering through their website is a completely different nightmare.
Tried buying a Harry Potter bag but the website kept throwing errors at me. Decided to contact their customer service team, which turned out to be just as useless. After 30 minutes of trying, I couldn't complete the order because something was stuck in their system. Total waste of my time. Go somewhere else instead.
I placed an order back in March for something that showed as in stock. Weeks went by with no delivery so I checked my account and suddenly it said back ordered, expected in May. Then June came and nothing arrived. Checked again and now it said July. Fast forward to July and it shifted to October. Now I'm in October and the order was just cancelled. What really gets me is they never sent a single email with an explanation or update. Not one notification in all that time.
This company completely robbed me. My order never showed up, and they're blaming it on the shipping company saying it got lost. What they really mean is one of their staff probably stole what I bought - and it was a limited edition item too. Total waste of time and money with this place.
The box showed up completely damaged and they basically said tough luck. These people have no clue about collectibles and don't give two cents about customers. I'm never ordering from them again.
I placed three orders, and since I'm Canadian shipping to a US address, my billing and shipping are naturally different. Only one got shipped. The other two were cancelled. Called to speak with a manager and found out the issue was the address mismatch. She said there's nothing she can do about it. So what, I can never send someone a gift directly to their home? I can never use a PO box? This is absolutely insane business practice.
Customer service here is the worst. They'll make up fake expiration dates on coupons and refuse to honor what they actually promised.
I've shopped at this Box Lunch location multiple times and usually it's fine, but there was this one employee who gave me the creeps and was super rude. She's probably new, but I'm definitely not going back. She kept staring at me and my grandmother in this weird way that made both of us uncomfortable and upset. I've had great interactions with their staff before, but this person completely ruined the experience. I'm taking my business elsewhere.
Warning to all shoppers: be extremely careful here. The return and refund process is designed to make your life miserable. I bought two shirts right before Christmas and wanted to cancel the same day. They refused, saying it was already in the warehouse, so tough luck. I had to pay for something I didn't want, wait for delivery, then return it. And after I got the refund, I had to wait up to 30 days. I sent it back on December 23rd with tracking confirmation it arrived on the 26th, but a full month later still no refund. When I called, a customer service person actually laughed at me and asked why I bought something I didn't want. I'm filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and urge others to do the same.
