About Europcar

Europcar traces its origins back to 1949, when Parisian entrepreneur Raoul-Louis Mattei revived the idea: “If you can’t afford to buy a car, why not rent one when you need it?” He created "L'Abonnement Automobile", a company that would later become Europcar. The company's success was rapid, as car rental responded to a real need.

Through the decades, Europcar expanded across Europe and beyond. Partnership with airlines, travel agencies, and companies helped the Group become a leader in car rental services, adapting to the increasing demand for mobility.

Now, the Europcar Mobility Group has over 200,000 vehicles in its fleet and serves 5 million customers in more than 140 countries. The vision Europcar was founded upon remains the same, but it is now even more relevant and promising because we are entering the usage and sharing economy era.

I own a very reputable store selling electronic machines, including models of pressure washers; my store serves hundreds of customers a day. I also have knowledge about the automotive industry.

I reserved and paid for a vehicle for 8…

I reserved and paid for a vehicle for 8 people through Europcar. During the booking process, the rental was clearly presented as a van for up to 8 passengers, which was an essential requirement for my trip. After contacting customer support to confirm this, I was informed that within the same category they may provide a vehicle with only 7 seats, depending on availability. This makes the reservation useless for my needs, as we are exactly 8 people. What makes this worse is that Europcar:Cannot guarantee the service they soldRefuses a free cancellation, arguing that I selected the “Light” packageTells me I must cancel myself first before escalating, which puts all responsibility and financial risk on the customerI do not want to cancel voluntarily and then be told later that the issue was my choice. The problem is simple: Europcar sold a service they admit they may not be able to provide, yet still expects full payment. This is misleading, unfair, and extremely frustrating. A rental company should either guarantee the essential conditions of the booking or allow cancellation without penalty when they cannot.I would not recommend Europcar if you need certainty about vehicle size or passenger capacity.

Deceived into unwanted excess insurance.

The car was fine, pick up and return were simple. A very friendly man at the desk. BUT he deceived me into paying for excess insurance. I have my own excess insurance, I told him I didn't want his, but on the form he had ticked the box and I didn't notice. 3 weeks later the charge, £123 for 3 days, appeared on my credit card bill. Don't trust them!

Very bad experience

Very slow service at the counter, 45 minutes to complete the paperwork. Tried multiple times to upsell me on their insurance to the point of saying that the insurance I bought through Expedia was invalid. When I dropped off the car they said no damage, it was fine. Then a few days later they hit my visa card with over 500 euros in so called damage. They did not provide any supporting documentation or evidence. They did not respond to emails or phone calls. I escalated to Visa and after a few months they found in my favour and refunded the bogus charges. Don’t rent from this company.

I am still dealing with Europcar

I am still dealing with Europcar. Now they are saying that I did not report that it had an illegal tyre when I wrote them a contemporaneous email with the name of the staff it was reported to! I would avoid these people like the plague

I’m very disappointed with my recent…

I’m very disappointed with my recent experience with Europcar. I had fully paid for Full Collision Damage Protection (zero excess), expecting that I would be completely covered in case of any issues. When I returned the car, the staff member suddenly claimed there was a damage “not documented in the contract.” This damage was absolutely not caused by me, and the car was returned in the same condition I received it. Despite this, they still charged me a 50€ “Damage Administration Fee.”What’s even more frustrating is that this fee was charged even though I had full coverage. It feels unfair and misleading to sell “full protection” and then still charge customers extra fees for damages they didn’t cause. This experience left me feeling mistrusted and taken advantage of. I won’t be renting with Europcar again unless they make their policies clearer and stop penalizing customers who did nothing wrong.

Fraud?

Low-quality local Europcar franchise with none of the structure, support or service standards you would normally expect from Europcar in other countries. Apart from carrying the Europcar name, it operates just like any other low-cost provider whose desks are crammed together in the airport terminal. The rental process itself is fine, and if you have no issues your experience will probably be acceptable — but if you keep the car for several days and anything happens, be prepared. On one of the days during my rental, I left the car parked at a beach parking area and, when I returned, I found a small scratch caused by another vehicle maneuvering next to it. That’s when the problems started.Since the company does not allow you to take out any insurance on site, they simply charge whatever they want with zero transparency. I was billed almost €300 for a superficial 15 cm scratch that didn’t even reach the metal. You are forced to accept a maximum excess of €500 and, only a few days later — once you’ve already left the country — they inform you of the final amount, which is absurdly inflated. The car itself was an old, heavily worn small Kia, and what they charged was more than what the whole car was realistically worth. It feels as if they have built a business model around this, especially given how people drive on the island, which makes it extremely difficult to keep a car for several days without some minor mark. Deeply disappointing and borderline abusive.

Awful

My experience with EuropCar is terrible. They retained costs that are not justified and they are still doing this after one month from our vacation.Firstly I did not know that they would retain again the rental amount paid already via booking. So at the moment I have paid twice the amount of the rented car (one via booking and again via EuropCar because they did not refund the rental amount). Then, they asked me which is the itinerary for our trip and they said we need to pay some tax for crossing the border to Gibraltar where we went ONLY 1 DAY, but of course they retained this tax for all 5 days of our trip!!! Impossible (15 Euros per each day). Then after 1 month, when they didn't refund any amount taken abusively from the deposit (for the rental costs, paid already to booking, for the crossing border 5 days, for some environmental taxes of almost 100 Euros that no one mentioned anytime), they are still wthdrowing money from my account! Today they took another 40 Euros for which I didn't receive any other invoice or details.I want to mention that our trip was on 08.11 and today it's 12.12 and they still didn't finish the calculations & refunds with me, booking or who the hell they should. At the moment the total costs for the car I rented (that of course wasn't the car that I chose from booking) is 648 Euros. even if the costs that I agreed on booking was 195.35 (insurance included). Please do not rent any car from Europcar!!!They are true thiefs.I'm also waiting for some explanation from booking that they estimated to provide until 23.12...it passed already other 2 weekend and no concrete answer from booking too, after almost 2 months from the trip….

Scam Business in Europcar Malta Airport

I would like to share my experience renting a car from you (rentalcars.com and Europcar Malta Airport). Or rather, the attempt to do so. Because it is not successful despite a booking made in August which was supposed to be December 27 to January 3.I am left with the feeling that your agent in Malta can best be described as a big scammer. He scams the customers and he scams you, as you lose customers. For example, I will never use either rentalcars.com or Eurocar again. In short: I booked the car in advance with my Visa card - a credit card. I have done this many times without problems. Visa cards in Denmark are both a DanKort - which is a debit AND a Visa card. If you put it in a machine, you can clearly see this immediately. However, your agent in Malta Airport claimed that this could not be done. There was no way I could rent the car with that card. He never tried the card in the machine and did not listen to the fact that it is both a debit and credit card.Your agent suggested, however, that he cancel the booking and I booked directly with him. He of course presented this as a kindness, but strangely enough, my card could be used in this situation. And here all alarm bells are ringing and should also be doing the same with you. Because he clearly has a side business where he cancels bookings - you are missing out on revenue and he is scoring the business without you.I overheard this happening to another customer at the same time, so it was clearly a pattern - or all Visa cards had suddenly become debit cards overnight.Fortunately, Alamo was able to figure out that a Visa card was a credit card. You are missing out on this business - and probably many others in Malta as your agent is scamming you.I have lost 80 EUR on a cancellation fee that I couldn't avoid. If Rentalcars/Europcar had some kind of code of conduct or just wanted to preserve your brand a little, you would have sent this money back immediately.I doubt you do. Scams are obviously your modus operandi.
