What Shoppers Say About efile.com
Shoppers consistently report that efile.com is a deceptive operation that advertises free tax filing but charges unexpected fees at the end of the process. Reviewers describe a poorly designed website that fails to save information during filing, unhelpful support resources, and unresponsive customer service when attempting refunds. One shopper reported the site has shut down and prevented access to previously filed returns, creating problems for users needing historical tax documents.
The service appears to target users with simple tax situations (such as those filing with only Social Security income) and then charge surprise fees ranging from $20 to $89 at the final filing step. Multiple reviewers state they were told filing would be free but were charged unexpectedly. Shoppers consistently recommend avoiding the service and using alternative tax filing platforms instead.

Sorted by: Most recentThis is a complete scam operation and you should run away from it. The website is poorly made. The help section provides almost no useful information. Half the time the website doesn't save what you enter as you go through the process. My income was only Social Security and I was told I'd file free, but they hit me with an $89 charge out of nowhere. TOTAL SCAM OPERATION THAT YOU SHOULD AVOID
They're completely avoiding me after I said I wanted my money back because of surprise charges that weren't disclosed. Just ignore you and treat you badly. Run far away from them.
I really regret not checking reviews before I used efile.com to file taxes. The company shut down their website and won't let people view their previous tax returns. Back in 2022, I helped a family member file their return. Fast forward to late 2024, they're trying to get mortgage approval before the holidays. We discovered a massive mistake on the return showing vehicle expenses at $138K, which was never actually input. It could have been a system error or maybe something related to the reported security breach in 2022 that efile.com apparently didn't tell anyone about. This big mistake is really hurting their mortgage application, but efile.com has no way to let them file an amendment online. When we first reached out, they denied ever having an account until we sent a confirmation email from 2022. After that, they acted like they couldn't pull up any tax returns from their system. efile.com shouldn't be recommended by the IRS, which is actually how I found them in the first place. Definitely won't use them again.
I'd give it zero stars if I could. This is a complete ripoff. They advertised a free service but then charged me $39 right at the end when filing. Then I got an email saying my return was rejected, supposedly from the IRS because of database issues. Total scam. Now they've taken money for various other charges too. efile.com is nothing but a rip-off and I'm telling everyone to stay away.
I lost interest when I tried to file an extension for a return on their site. I worked through their whole process just to find out they wanted almost $20. Definitely not worth the cost. There are other services out there that will do extensions completely free and a lot faster.
Would have rated it zero stars: I used their free service with just Social Security income plus one small IRS payment and no state taxes. When I finally got to the end (which took forever to reach), they wanted $28 to file it and extra if I wanted to print anything. Forget about them.
Don't go with this company. They upgrade you to deluxe without asking. You use a 50% off coupon code and it shows the discount on your fee, but then when your refund comes through you get charged $78.98, which is definitely NOT 50% off! Super dishonest.
Unexpected charges totaling almost $70! Fees that you don't see until you're actually ready to file. I ended up paying almost $70 for something that should've cost nothing at all!!!
I would absolutely rate this zero stars if I could! I told them clearly I wanted to file for the prior year. I answered some questions and then the next screen showed 2021. I backed out and never got my money back. I sent multiple emails explaining everything and haven't received a refund. You're charging me $29.99 for absolutely nothing!!! Plus suddenly my emails aren't getting through to them. They must be blocking me! How is that okay? I'm calling my credit card company, reporting you to the BBB, telling everyone I know, and I won't ever come back.
I wish I could give them zero stars. I'm not bothered about getting less money back. I'm not even upset I paid $45 when I had multiple forms to handle (three different income sources, mortgage interest, student loans, and more). It's pretty standard to file free when you only have one W2. What really irritates me is that I found this company on the IRS website. Why would the IRS recommend such an unreliable service? I've been waiting for months on my refund! Now I'm finding out I'm getting thousands less than they said. The amount isn't the real issue. I'm frustrated about how incredibly long it took to actually get my money.
