What Shoppers Say About efile.com
Shoppers consistently report that efile.com is a deceptive operation that advertises free tax filing but charges unexpected fees at the end of the process. Reviewers describe a poorly designed website that fails to save information during filing, unhelpful support resources, and unresponsive customer service when attempting refunds. One shopper reported the site has shut down and prevented access to previously filed returns, creating problems for users needing historical tax documents.
The service appears to target users with simple tax situations (such as those filing with only Social Security income) and then charge surprise fees ranging from $20 to $89 at the final filing step. Multiple reviewers state they were told filing would be free but were charged unexpectedly. Shoppers consistently recommend avoiding the service and using alternative tax filing platforms instead.

Sorted by: Most recente-file is a complete scam. I finished the entire filing process with them and got charged $28 for an emailed copy of my returns. The next day I got an email that the IRS rejected my returns, but they still took the $28 from my account. When I tried to get in touch with them, they didn't respond, yet they kept my $28. e-file is absolutely a scam and I will never let them take advantage of me again. Please take these reviews seriously. Efile is a total scam.
I really wish they'd allow zero stars. Like so many other people, I wish I'd checked the reviews because I got taken advantage of too. I'm a senior living on Social Security, filing a straightforward 1040, and they charged me $67, which is basically half of what I have for the month. When I asked for my money back, they said it was already filed so tough luck. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY THAT'S SCAMMING PEOPLE. The BBB really needs to shut them down. They scam folks constantly, day in and day out.
I wish I'd looked at the reviews before filing with efile.com. I made a stupid choice to file on tax day when everyone else was doing it. Their system must have glitched and my return got totally messed up. It says I'm getting a refund ten times larger than what I should actually get. I emailed someone at the company since they don't have a phone line available. It's been really frustrating because they keep saying my taxes went through fine. I'm going to get audited by both the IRS and my state because my return is so wrong. I absolutely will not use eFile.com ever again.
efile advertised that their service was free. Wrong!!! Their customer service is absolutely terrible. I actually called my bank to watch out in case they tried pulling money out without permission. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!
This is NOT the actual e-file.com where filing is free. This is efile.com and they will bill you. It's a classic bait and switch. Make sure you use the dash in the real website!
I went to this website after getting a postcard from the IRS saying I could file for free. But when I finished, efile charged me $49. I had already done my return on paper first and just wanted to submit it online. I found a discount code and went ahead with it since I needed to get my refund including missing stimulus money. The IRS rejected it. My info was all correct but now I have to wait two weeks for something in the mail to prove my identity. The IRS already has what they need. DO NOT USE. They don't respond to calls or emails. I could've just gone to an office in person, I'm retired, and gotten it filed for nothing.
Avoid this service. It's a classic bait and switch where you end up getting charged for stuff you don't actually need.
This website is terrible and I'm warning you to stay far away!!! There are sneaky fees everywhere! I'm a single person working part time gigs, and I spent hours putting together my taxes on this site. Then they hit me with charges for their deluxe version. There's nothing fancy about my tax situation at all. I foolishly used them last year. Wasted my time fooling around with them again this year before finding a different site that's completely free and way easier to navigate. This place feels like a straight up scam to me.
I paid them to file my taxes and the return got rejected because of something with my AGI. I couldn't get any help whatsoever, no emails back, no phone calls, nothing! But boy did they grab my money quickly! I'm telling you straight up, DO NOT think about using this company. Yes, you might pay a bit more elsewhere, but this place is a waste of your time!!!! SERIOUSLY!
I'm doubtful of the good reviews on this site. I read on efile's website that I could file only my state taxes for $28.95 since I had already filed federal elsewhere. I spent hours filling out and uploading everything for the state return. They promised you can file state alone without filing federal twice, but that's completely false. Here's what actually happens: they tell you that you can file your state taxes even after filing federal with someone else. What they don't mention is that after you submit and file, efile submits BOTH a federal and state return for you. Since federal was already filed elsewhere, both get rejected right away. The result is that efile.com will simply not respond to your messages and will leave you hanging. This company knew they'd get the $28.95 and then become unavailable once you realized it was a scam. There's no phone number to reach this company. Be careful. This place is a total scam.
