What Shoppers Say About Johnston & Murphy
Johnston & Murphy receives predominantly negative feedback, with shoppers reporting serious issues across both customer service and product quality. The most consistent complaints involve order cancellations without proper explanation or timely refunds, shipping failures, and unresponsive customer service. Multiple reviewers describe a significant decline in shoe quality, particularly with chukka boots experiencing sole separation within months of purchase, a major concern for a brand historically associated with durability.
The few positive reviews highlight the durability and comfort of Johnston & Murphy footwear when products perform as intended, with one shopper reporting a pair of chukka boots that remained comfortable and intact through extensive wear over a year. However, these isolated positive experiences are vastly outweighed by complaints about deteriorating quality, order fulfillment problems, and poor customer communication.

Sorted by: Most recentFirst time shopping here and I had a gift card from the holidays. Bought something online and four days later got an email claiming that I had cancelled it myself. Rang them up to find out what happened and they admitted they were actually out of stock, not that I cancelled anything. They wouldn't own up to their mistake or explain why they blamed me instead. Definitely not coming back.
Terrible value for what you're paying. Their customer service is nonexistent. FedEx never even showed up with my package.
Placed an order on their website and they charged my card immediately. Five days go by and then bam, they email me saying it's been cancelled. Seems like they overbooked and just started axing orders they couldn't fulfill. But did they explain anything? Nope. And as far as I can tell, the money never came back. Pretty poor way to handle things.
Picked up some chukka boots from Johnston & Murphy about a year back. Made it through the entire winter season without any issues, then stored them away when warm weather hit. Brought them back out this past fall and they're still going strong. Super comfortable with zero complaints so far. During a week-long trip through Montana, I had them on my feet every day and couldn't have been happier with the performance. Only downside is they don't seem to carry my wide size in this style again, which is a shame because I'd definitely buy another pair.
Over the last couple of years I've purchased three pairs of their chukka boots, and every single one had the sole separate within four months of wearing them. I've been faithful to the brand for a long time, but their quality has taken such a nosedive that I'm actively searching for a replacement brand.
Used to trust Johnston Murphy completely and thought their shoes were built to last. But the last few pairs I've purchased have let me down big time. Each one deteriorated way faster than it should have. The current pair I'm wearing has barely been worn and already showing signs of falling apart. This is frustrating because now I'm hunting for a different shoe brand that actually delivers quality.
My experience was pretty rough from start to finish. Never even got to wear what I ordered because they cancelled it without a heads up or asking if something was suspicious. My credit card didn't flag it either since nothing fraudulent happened. They told me to place a new order. Tried doing that but the new customer discount code wouldn't work anymore. Got on chat support and they said I had to call instead. Call and sit on hold? This company doesn't seem very interested in sales. Easy fix: send me an email with a fresh promo code. I've got my order details on file with you so you can verify I'm telling the truth.
Grabbed a pair of their Upton men's shoes and the stitching split apart on both sides of the left shoe right away. I've been loyal to this brand for more than three decades, so this really stung. The quality just isn't there anymore. Without any kind of workmanship backing, I'm done. Switching to Allen Edmond instead.
Went to the local store and an employee was helping me out. Suddenly they got distracted with another customer. When I asked for a different size, they actually got snippy with me. That's exactly why that location was dead empty when I was there.
I've picked up three pairs of shoes from them and every single pair has impressed me. The leather quality is outstanding and honestly smells expensive, which makes the price tag feel justified. Their styles get tons of compliments from people around me. I did have one small issue with the laces on a pair and their support team stepped up and fixed it really quickly. Haven't had them long enough to judge durability yet, but based on what I've seen so far I'm confident they'll hold up great as long as I take care of the leather properly.
