What Shoppers Say About KOA
KOA receives highly polarized reviews, with shoppers either praising the chain enthusiastically or reporting significant problems. Satisfied guests consistently highlight spotless bathrooms and facilities, friendly and helpful staff, well-maintained grounds, and quality amenities across multiple locations. These positive reviewers often stayed at multiple KOA properties and recommend the experience without reservation.
Negative reviews focus on operational and service failures that significantly impact the stay. Common complaints include non-refundable cancellation policies, unclean camping spots (including pet waste left by previous guests), unreliable electrical service, poor WiFi connectivity, noise issues (particularly at locations near airports), and inadequate responses to facility problems. Several one-star reviews describe situations where issues were not resolved despite guest requests, leaving visitors without essential services like air conditioning during hot weather.

Sorted by: Most recentExcellent campground with spotless bathrooms and facilities, plus the staff was super friendly and made the whole trip really nice.
Just finished an RV trip across the country and stayed at several KOA locations including Lake Isabella, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Benson, and Mesa/Apache. Every single one deserves five stars. All the facilities were spotless, staff went above and beyond to help us, the grounds were well kept, and the bathrooms and amenities were top notch.
The Lynden, Washington KOA is not somewhere I'd go back to. When we arrived between August 22 and 24, our spot was covered in dog waste that we had to clean ourselves. Our electric service was unreliable or out completely for two days, forcing us to rely on propane for the refrigerator and leaving us without air conditioning despite temperatures hitting 90 degrees. Seasonal campers next to us were rowdy, intoxicated, and using drugs all day and night until past 2 in the morning with constant yelling and cursing. When we complained, things actually got worse, with them threatening us. The manager Eddy claimed to resolve it in a couple hours, but that never happened. It got even worse. He blamed the power company for the electric problems, but other sections of the campground had power just fine, so that didn't add up. Calls and emails to management go unanswered. I've called corporate twice. I'm also requesting a refund since we paid for electricity we never received during our stay. My suggestion is to find a nice state or county park instead. They're cheaper and way more peaceful. The Lynden KOA is not worth your time or money.
My son and I decided to celebrate his graduation with a cross-country road trip, primarily staying at KOA locations. As someone who served as a disabled veteran, I wanted to make his birthday special by booking teepee number three at the Grand Canyon/Williams KOA for July 4th. Unfortunately, it turned into a disaster. When we arrived on July 3rd, the teepee was disgusting, filled with the smell of waste and trash. It was impossible to even spend a few minutes inside. The front desk staff seemed aware of the problem but offered nothing to fix it. There were no other options available, so I had to request a refund, which they processed with zero apology. We found ourselves stranded near a major tourist destination during a holiday weekend, hundreds of miles from home in Maine, scrambling to find somewhere else to stay. The only place we could find was significantly more expensive, adding a lot of financial pressure to our trip. The staff's indifference and poor treatment were completely unacceptable. What should have been a memorable occasion became incredibly stressful. KOA is a company we trusted, but they let us down badly. No one should have to deal with this kind of treatment.
Having a KOA next to an airport is a terrible idea. Jet noise overhead throughout the day and night makes it nearly impossible to enjoy your stay. The noise level is just awful. We were told the WiFi would be spotty during a hockey game, but the truth is the internet is bad all the time. We tried streaming a movie in the afternoon when there was no game, and it kept cutting out constantly. We couldn't leave soon enough. The experience was awful. Check out the location in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario if you get the chance. That one is the best KOA in Canada.
KOA's pricing structure has gotten out of hand. Their reservation fees and deposit policies are unreasonable, especially when you look at their strict cancellation rules. Won't be coming back.
KOA wiped out over 35,000 reward points from my account because my membership lapsed and nobody bothered to let me know it had expired. This kind of policy doesn't sit right with me. You earn your points and they shouldn't just disappear.
I'd skip KOA based on my experience. This was my first and only stay, and it involved issues with my booking and unclear terms. I called four days before my trip to reserve a spot. The representative never mentioned anything about fees if I had to cancel. When they asked for my card, they said it was just to hold the reservation. Moments later, my card was charged. Our travel trailer developed a water system problem that made the trip impossible, so I called to cancel. That's when I found out KOA charges a 65 dollar fee and requires seven days notice for cancellations. Nobody told me this upfront. If I'd known about those terms, I would have booked a state park instead, even if it meant traveling further.
