What Shoppers Say About Tracfone Wireless Inc
Tracfone Wireless Inc (operating as SafeLink Wireless) receives sharply divided feedback, with shoppers either praising the company's mission to provide free or low-cost phone service to underserved populations or expressing frustration with operational issues. Supporters appreciate the accessibility of service for those facing financial hardship and the company's commitment to bridging gaps in connectivity. However, the majority of reviews cite significant problems: misrepresentation of device specifications (old phones marketed as new 5G models), long wait times for customer service (sometimes over an hour), difficulties with number transfers, unresolved billing issues, data service failures, and complaints about customer service communication quality. Many reviewers note a perceived decline in service quality since the company's acquisition by a major carrier.
Common pain points include inadequate staff training or language proficiency for support interactions, lengthy delays in processing benefits applications and account activations, and a sense that the company no longer prioritizes individual customer concerns. While some long-time customers acknowledge staying with the service despite recent issues, the overwhelming majority of recent reviews suggest serious operational and customer service challenges that undermine the company's mission of serving vulnerable populations.

Sorted by: Most recentReally disappointed with this company. They ended up shutting down my number with zero explanation. They randomly disconnect accounts for no reason at all. Find literally anyone else to go with. The random disconnections without explanation are the worst, and when you call support they basically tell you to reapply from scratch, which means you lose your number. Don't even think about transferring your number to them because they'll lose it.
I've been dealing with incredibly frustrating problems with both of these carriers that have left me extremely unhappy. My SIM card got disabled after I asked for a phone number change because someone was targeting my line with scams. That stopped me from making calls or getting verification codes I needed to access my bank account. I bought a new SIM card and service plan to fix it. But now they're claiming there's an IMEI mismatch that prevents activating my new SIM card. I provided my PIN and tried verifying my account using phone numbers from the last sixty days they specified, but they keep insisting on this same verification and I can't activate my purchased service. I've spent over eight hours on phone calls with different support people and haven't gotten any real help. I'm out real money because I have service plans I paid for but can't use. I'm really upset with the support I received.
My phone isn't working right. It's an older Moto model I bought to get away from my previous phone. I bought that one myself before trying this. Now this Moto only functions when connected to internet. I'm also paying a lot out of pocket to keep my other service active. I got a flip phone through a retailer for my backup. That didn't work either. My old Moto barely keeps a connection and information cuts out constantly. Can someone please provide me a replacement card or fix this situation.
Second time dealing with this LifeLine provider and it's been a nightmare. They approved my application through their website but then claimed they don't service my area. Two weeks pass and suddenly a phone shows up that I never ordered or requested. I took the SIM out and put it in my own device instead, and surprisingly everything worked including Wi-Fi calling. But then when I tried to move my number over, they demanded I buy another SIM card. When I asked for a supervisor, they refused, then suddenly said they could help. After five minutes of nothing, they promised to call back in two hours. One hour later my service just stops. An automated call comes through and hangs up twice. I had to use another line to reach them. The second rep gave me the same story about needing a new SIM and refused supervisor access before hanging up on me. As a bonus, that phone they sent without my permission doesn't even work without the SIM they gave me.
Their service intentionally gets slower every month and it's awful. I dealt with dropped calls and people couldn't hear me clearly even when I had full signal bars. I had to step outside for anyone to actually hear my voice. Their support team was unhelpful and kept disconnecting on me. Getting my port information out of them was like pulling teeth and took two attempts.
Overall the phone functions fine without any real problems, but I'm having trouble connecting to Wi-Fi and can't figure out what's causing it. They really need to improve their connection interface to make it more user-friendly.
Getting help with their phone service has been driving me absolutely crazy. For the last two months I've been trying to get them to activate the lifeline program for my phone. I've been their customer for over four years and the lifeline program has confirmed multiple times that I'm eligible. Yet they keep refusing to activate it and the affordable connectivity program too. To even get them to finally set up my phone, they charged me $20 for their service. I've called their representatives at least fifty times. It's consuming so much of my time and causing so much stress that it's affecting my everyday life. Now they're telling me it could take up to three months. Every call gets a different answer. Their reps are consistently rude and everything they do seems designed to avoid actually helping.
I got approved for their plan in just minutes and was promised a free phone with unlimited calling, texting, and data within a few days. That was almost two months ago and I still don't have a phone, don't have service, and nobody can tell me what happened. Every person I talk to claims they can't access my information. They said they'd schedule a callback and did call, but nobody was on the other end. That call just sat there silent for almost half an hour before I hung up and called back to get the same runaround. Don't waste your time with this company and their nonsense. It's straight up a scam.
Lifeline service offers just 350 minutes compared to 1000 from competitors. During my month with them my data connection failed nine times. Every single time I had to sit on the phone over an hour waiting for support to fix their mistake. I even had to add more minutes and data twice during that one month, spending an extra $25 even though I stay on Wi-Fi and barely use my phone. I ended up missing important calls from my doctor and my job, and ultimately I lost that job because of their service failures. Pick a different provider if you're on lifeline.
These people act like bullies and they have zero accountability because there's no way to control quality from an overseas center. You'll wait for hours to talk to someone. They can't handle basic problems and they don't actually listen to customers. Like most overseas operations, they constantly refuse to let you talk to someone higher up even when they obviously can't solve your issue. They won't let me send back two phones that don't work with my service. The support team kept lying and said I didn't buy the phones from them so they wouldn't authorize a return. That mistake cost me over $400 and I spent 18 hours on the phone total. I had no working phone for a full month. After my second complaint someone claiming to be management called. The state attorney general's office sent them a letter explaining I wanted money back for the phones. Yet the manager kept insisting she could just connect them even though the phones don't work with the service and had fake SIM cards. This company is selling counterfeit devices and they know it. The service is some of the absolute worst out there with reps who deliberately hang up, transfer you to nowhere, and refuse to help you.
